Hello.
Is that all to the log? there should be a lot more than that.

thats all i got when i ran it, perhaps due to the fact that i keep getting a low memory error and killing all my running apps?

it does a long beep, tells me i have a low amount of memory available, and it kills all the non-essential running processes except the fake windows security center that comes with this virus.

after many long hours of researching this virus and trying different things though, i managed to get Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware to run, and it seems to have eliminated the problem for me.

here's an updated HJT log:

Judging from that, would you say it was successfully removed? or will it come back to haunt me in the future? If so, what can i do to prevent that?

I am currently running the following in an attempt to prevent further infection:

ESET NOD32 SECURITY SUITE
MALWAREBYTE'S ANTI-MALWARE

Is there any other software you would recommend to me?
I am about to download Spybot S&D, but I'm not really sure if that's already too much, too little, or just a poor setup altogether.

Thanks a lot for your time :]

Did you have to rename MBAM? to get it running?

No, what happened was I was trying to go to the website and it kept telling me the page was unavailable.

After looking around though I found an alternative place to download it, and somehow I had no problems running it. Just ran the scan told it to fix all the issues it found, restarted my PC and it was gone.

Okay, lets make sure it's gone.

  • Please download DDS by sUBs to your Desktop (Important!!) from one of these locations:
    Link 1
    Link 2
  • Double click DDS.scr to run.
  • When complete, two logs will open. Save both of the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste DDS.txt back here, I don't need to see attach.txt.

Good it seems like everything is running smoothly and I haven't noticed any suspicious pop ups or applications running, i think its fixed. Thanks alot for your help guys, do you have any recommendations for me as far as avoiding future infections?

I normally just format my pc whenever i get a virus, but this is my room mate's laptop and he has around 80GB of music... He'd murder me if i lost it Goofy

Since my laptop needs a new motherboard though, were sharing this one for the time being

Glad to hear you are sorted out 😉

Below I will list a number of recommendations for you to follow:

We need to make a new restore point.

To turn off System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (or the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box), and then click OK.
4. Click Yes when you receive the prompt to the turn off System Restore.

Now we need to make a new restore point.
To turn on System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (To turn on System Restore), and then click OK.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
I also recommand the following add-ons for Firefox, they will help keep you safe from malicious scripts or activeX exploits.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/433

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

To help you keep your software updated, please considering using this free software program that will check for program updates.
Update Checker

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or
Outpost
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

If you would take a moment to fill out our feedback form, we would appreciate it.
The link can be found here.

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. Big Grin

Done! :] thanks so much, filled out the feedback form and am downloading / installing all the software you recommended.

I have two final questions for ya though, if it isn't too much to ask-

1) I understand IE is a poor browser at best and you don't recommend it, however i recently switched from Mozilla Firefox to Google Chrome. Would you recommend that I switch back, or am I fine with chrome?

and

2) I believe ESET NOD32 Security Suite comes with a firewall, should I still proceed to download something like Kerio or Outpost? Or will that cause problems like having two AV's?

Thanks again :]

descriptionWin32/Agent.ODG detected with ESET SS but unable to remove, please help! EmptyRe: Win32/Agent.ODG detected with ESET SS but unable to remove, please help!

Mozilla Firefox is a safe and Secure browser I would go with that but Google Chrome is fine as well its up to you 😉

Yes ESET Nod32 Smart Security comes with a built in personal firewall so I don't recommend installing a thrid party firewall as it could cause conflicts between the two. You could however, run ESET Nod32 Anti-virus along with a firewall but not smart security.

Yep, we'll need to scan with MBAM again.

Please download and run this tool.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Post the contents of the MBAM Log.
