Any help you can provide to remove this would be great. I have tried installing malwarebytes anti-malware however after installing it will not run.

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop
Link: HERE or HERE.

  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop

2. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

  • Leave the script box empty.
  • Leave the ticked box "Scan for rootkit" ticked.
  • Then tick "Disable any rootkits found"
  • Now click on the Execute to begin execution of the script.
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

The Avenger will automatically do the following:

  • It will Restart your computer.
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
3. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

Once again, thank you. What does this trojan do to the machine? Would it mess up internet access as a few computers on the network are having issues connecting?

As far as I know, this doesn't spread through networks. It's a DNS hijacker rootkit.

Please download the current version of HijackThis from HERE

  • Double click and run the installer.
  • It will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\hijackthis.exe
  • After installing, you should get the user agreement, press accept and Hijack This will run.
  • Select Do a system scan and save a log file. This will open a notepad file of everything Hijack This found, copy and paste it back here.

  • Press "Fix Checked"
  • Close Hijack This.

  • Lets use MBAM since it's already on the system. Open MBAM interface.
  • Once the program has loaded, open the "Update" tab and press the "Check for updates" button, and allow the updates to be downloaded.
  • Now go back into the "Scan" tab, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Hello.
You didn't update MBAM as my instructions say.

Database version: 1904

The latest database is 1942, so please update it.

Next, lets go deeper and make sure we got it all.

  • Please download DDS by sUBs to your Desktop (Important!!) from one of these locations:
    Link 1
    Link 2
  • Double click DDS.scr to run
  • When complete, DDS.txt will open.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste DDS.txt back here, I don't need to see attach.txt.

rebooting now. AVG resident sheild alert came up again as I was doing it saying threat detected and the virus was again identified as Win32/Cryptor. Detected on open. Should I be worried?

Hello.
It's most probably the avenger/OTMoveIt backup.

Delete these two folders in bold:
C:\Avenger
C:\_OTMoveIt

How is the machine running now?

Its running, thanks very much for all your help, I will be advertising everywhere about you guys! Just super! I am at Uni and currently writing a dissertation so your help with this has been just invaluable and saved me from having a breakdown. I know who to come to if I get it again. RE: MBAM - the AVG message about Win32/Cryptor came up as that was running too - is it ok to leave MBAM on or what should I do with it?

descriptionwin32/cryptor EmptyRe: win32/cryptor

Hello.

It should be just fine to leave MBAM there, it's a very effective scanner. We just need to remove the tools we have used.

  • Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it again.
  • Press the green CleanUp! button.
  • Press Yes cleanup process prompt, do the same for the reboot prompt.
  • No need for any logs.

We need to make a new restore point.

To turn off System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (or the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box), and then click OK.
4. Click Yes when you receive the prompt to the turn off System Restore.

Now we need to make a new restore point.
To turn on System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (To turn on System Restore), and then click OK.

Let me know once you've done that.

Hello.
That file doesn't wanna die.

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop
Link: HERE or HERE.

  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop
2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Files to delete:
c:\windows\system32\gaopdxjpcemhlneirlojfclibxakixkeboaxxf.dll
c:\windows\system32\gaopdxcounter

Folders to delete:
C:\found.000

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

  • Under "Input script here:", paste in the script from the quote box above.

4. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

File "c:\windows\system32\gaopdxcounter" deleted successfully.

Completed script processing.

Finished! Terminate.

Thanks again for all your help. Given the file cannot be found. Should I take that to mean that it was gone when I ran AVG and deleted it or has it hidden somewhere else?

Also when I ran MBAM again I got 3 Trojan.DNSChangers which even through I remove are still appearing after reboot plus 2 Adware.Cinmus.

Very frustrating - don't know what Id do without the help you have given me.

Hmm also when I have looked at AVG the system scan settings are all ticked apart from search for rootkits which is grayed out and cannot be changed, is that normal?

Hello.
Adware.Cinmus is a part of the avengers file, false positive. Ignore that bit.

Delete this folder in bold:
C:\Avenger

Let me know if AVG/MBAM finds anything apart from the Cinmus.

The cinmus are false positives. The registry data items need to go though.
Set MBAM to remove all of them, doesn't matter about the avenger anymore.

Hello.
Are you on a router?

Lets try a manual reg fix.

  • Now open a new notepad file.
  • Input this into the notepad file:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{938cf847-f51a-4cc5-9b1b-07745b5ac2b3}]
    "NameServer"=-
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{cfb53bdf-65d1-49fb-bce3-d851f1e35b0d}]
    "DhcpNameServer"-
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{cfb53bdf-65d1-49fb-bce3-d851f1e35b0d}]
    "NameServer"=-

  • Save this as fix.reg, save it to your desktop.
  • Double click fix.reg to run it.
  • Select yes to the registry merge prompt.

Yeah I am using a wireless router, that info would have helped sooner I assume.

Have taken the action and it said it had been added.

Hello.
Sometimes DNS hijackers don't just infect your machines, they effect the Linux firmware inside the router as a way of DNS manipulation. Meaning they infect your router too, so as soon as you get online, the infection comes back.

The only way to fix this is to do a hard reboot of the router (setting it back to factory defaults), but doing so you will lose internet access because the DNS isn't set to your ISP.

To fix that, you'll need to work with your ISP so the details can be set back to them. Before we do that though, lets go for one more even deeper scan.

  • Download combofix from here
    Link 1
    Link 2
  • We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.
  • See HERE for how to disable your AV. (AVG8)
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts.
    NOTE:
  • Tell Combofix NOT to download the recovery console(If prompted...).
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Darn.
Try this.

Press Start. In the search box, type in cmd to do a search for the command prompt.
When it appears in the list, right click cmd > Select "Run as administrator"

Now when the command prompt opens, type in:

netsh winsock reset

Hit enter.
Reboot normally.

Any internet connection now?

Hello.
I want you to uninstall Bittorrent, that's probably how you got infected.

  • Open HijackThis
  • When Hijack This opens, click "Open the Misc Tools section"
  • Then select "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Click on "Save List..." (generates uninstall_list.txt)
  • Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Hello.

While Bittorrent isn't there, there is one or two things that need to go because they are old and are a security risk.

  • Click Start >> Control Panel.
  • Under the Programs click Uninstall a Program
  • Highlight the following:

    Adobe Reader 8.1.0
    Java(TM) 6 Update 5
    VLC media player 0.9.4

  • Click on the Uninstall/Change button at the top.

Lets have Combofix do this for us.

Note: If you lose internet connection again, then go back to my Run command and do that again.

Now open a new notepad file.
Input this into the notepad file:

KILLALL::

Registry::
[HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\FirewallRules]
"{31FB613C-E313-4F61-8A14-31102316B035}"=-
"{73BC571D-1533-4987-8D93-88DA93A12744}"=-
"{2E883A8F-56D5-4FAA-B037-BA1BAEE2084C}"=-
"{9ECEC11F-5097-4097-9D48-09A7AB7A9384}"=-
"TCP Query User{441AAEA2-3302-4F41-AD9E-4D1BBBAF3B6C}c:\\users\\admin\\program files\\dna\\btdna.exe"=-
"UDP Query User{A8850546-B753-4F1E-9B62-3C4C75335FCB}c:\\users\\admin\\program files\\dna\\btdna.exe"=-
[HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\StandardProfile\AuthorizedApplications\List]
"c:\\Program Files\\BitTorrent\\bittorrent.exe"=-
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{938cf847-f51a-4cc5-9b1b-07745b5ac2b3}]
"NameServer"=-
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{cfb53bdf-65d1-49fb-bce3-d851f1e35b0d}]
"DhcpNameServer"-
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{cfb53bdf-65d1-49fb-bce3-d851f1e35b0d}]
"NameServer"=-

Save this as CFScript.txt, save it to your desktop also.
Then drag and drop CFScript.txt into combofix as seen below:
win32/cryptor Sfxdaw

This will open combofix.exe again, agree to it's terms and allow it to run, it may want to reboot after it's done. Post the resulting log back here.

Ok about to do so, re bittorrent, where did it go? I didn't uninstall it, in fact I used it just the other day.

descriptionwin32/cryptor EmptyRe: win32/cryptor

I don't know where it's gone, but we'll remove it's folders soon.
The CFScript will close the ports that bittorrent uses and it won't be allowed past the firewall anymore.

Update and scan with MBAM.
See if that DNSChanger returns. Smile...

I have updated MBAM still says current db is 1904. That correct?

I have 2 brother who did AI and software engineering, clearly the IT gene skipped me.

Shall run MBAM now?

I have one Trojan.DNSChanger still

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{cfb53bdf-65d1-49fb-bce3-d851f1e35b0d}\DhcpNameServer

descriptionwin32/cryptor EmptyRe: win32/cryptor

Hello.
That isn't the latest.
Download the latest from here:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam/database/mbam-rules.exe

Install that file.

  • Now open a new notepad file.
  • Input this into the notepad file:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{cfb53bdf-65d1-49fb-bce3-d851f1e35b0d}]
    "DhcpNameServer"=-

  • Save this as fix.reg, save it to your desktop.
  • Double click fix.reg to run it.
  • Select yes to the registry merge prompt.

See if it returns now.
