I keep getting a win32 error in module svchost.exe and my desktop keeps rebooting with a serious error (blue screen error caused by a device or driver). The Microsoft Windows website indicated I should check my hard disk for errors and when I did this it indicated that the Trojan win32/alureon!inf was found and removed. The problem still exists and the computer reboots a number of times during the day normally after being idle. I ran hijackthis and the contents of the log file are displayed below.

Hello.
We need to reset an Ask hijack in Firefox, but lets remove Ask from the machine.

Please download the OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer.

  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it.
  • Copy the bolded text below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    :files
    c:\program files\AskBarDis
    c:\windows\system32\tmp.reg
    C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Desktop\PC Protection Stuff\DDS by SUBS

    :reg
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar]
    "{3041d03e-fd4b-44e0-b742-2d9b88305f98}"=-

  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste instructions for items to be Moved" window (under the light blue bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt3
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Please post the OTMoveIt log.

i downloaded, installed, and ran OTMoveIT. i received the prompt that i'd need to reboot in order to finish the process. i clicked "yes" for the reboot, but nothing happened. i waited for awhile, and then i opted to do a "start....restart" and now my pc is stuck. it shutdown, but when it went to reboot, it's stuck on the blue "microsoft windows XP" page. my cursor moves...but the computer isn't doing ANYTHING. any idea on what happened????

*note, i'm using my spare laptop right now*

-EDIT- i used the 2nd link for OTMoveIT. the first link did not work.

Can you try this?
Reboot the machine, after the beep, start tapping the F8 key and do a last known good configuration?

Unless this machine is media center, it won't work.
The file is slightly different.

If you used the media center CD, you could format and make this machine into media center.
I don't know why this has happened, we haven't touched anything close to the kernel file.

Maybe, but we'd need access to the command prompt or DOS mode.
If we machine won't boot and we can't get to the command prompt via DOS, I don't know what we can do.

Okay, that's good news at least.
Now we can try a find a copy.

Type this command in.

copy /y "C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\ntoskrnl.exe" "C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntoskrnl.exe"

There is a few spaces between each part of this command, so I have re-typed it here so you can see where the spaces are:

copySPACE/ySPACE"C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\ntoskrnl.exe"SPACE"C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntoskrnl.exe"

The quote marks are needed here, so make sure you use the quote marks where I have.
Hopefully if the file exists there, it will say:
1 file(s) copied.

Hello.
I've talked to somone who knows more about DOS and batch script than me.

Lets do a search for any copies around the machine, this worked on mine so hopefully it works on this.

If the command is already set and showing C:\windows>, then you'll know where to start here, but if it's set in %userprofile% (C:\docs and settings\[user]), then it will need to be set to C:\windows.

At the command part, set it to the windows directory by doing the following:
cd C:\Windows

Then when it shows C:\windows>, type this in
dir /s ntoskrnl.*
Written out spaces if the font if hard to read:
dirSPACE/sSPACEntoskrnl.*

That will do a search for any ntoskrnl.exe files around the machine, allow it to run and it should report back with location/file extensions.

Post back here and give me a few different locations (exactly as seen) of any found.

for some reason the "/ command" doesn't work for me. it didn't work with the /y or /s...i keep getting "the parameter is not valid" error message.

is there another syntax to use for the search????

*note* i did try just typing:
dir ntoskrnl.*

and i received a message that says:
directory of c:\WINDOWS\ntoskrnl.*
No matching files were found.

it looks like it's only searching the c:\WINDOWS directory, and it's not searching the entire machine. is the intention of this command to search c:\WINDOWS and all of its sub directories, as well as other drives? i also have two other MAIN directories i can access from the recovery console:

D:\I386
D:\MiniNT

descriptionTrojan: win32/alureon!inf EmptyRe: Trojan: win32/alureon!inf

more_horiz
hey...i just found something interesting (sorry for the LOOONG rambling post). my D:\I386 is actually a "backup" of windows (did a google search), and i did a directory search and found the ntoskrnl.exe file there! i'm going to attempt to copy it from there to C:\WINDOWS.

now let me ask you this...if this is "supposed" to be a backup of windows, is there a way i can boot from here since i don't have my OEM system disk? it seems the HP folks were wise and partitioned the hard drive, and used this other as a back-up.

descriptionTrojan: win32/alureon!inf EmptyRe: Trojan: win32/alureon!inf

more_horiz
Hello.
Awesome.
But when copying from there, the "copy /y" command won't work, because the files are compressed, so you have to "expand" them.

Okay, access the recovery console, and when give a command prompt, type this in:

expand D:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ C:\windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

yes, it has a repair mode. do you think the problem is because the file hasn't been expanded?

descriptionTrojan: win32/alureon!inf EmptyRe: Trojan: win32/alureon!inf

more_horiz
well, i got windows back up and running. apparently, that back-up on the partitioned drive is specifically for "windows recovery." i guess for anyone needing future assistance with Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 that will not boot, this one particular way of solving the problem.

to give a "blow by blow" on what i did:

started the computer
repeatedly tapped f10 to enter "windows recovery console"
ran through all 4 scans
-basic scan
-memory scan
-optical drive scan
-hard drive scan
all 4 scans came back clean (which they may not for everyone)
clicked button to continue with recovery
it took about 30min to complete

basically, windows is "re-installed" without removing all of data files. it only removed upgrades, and other additions i made to the OS. it also cleaned up all of the shortcuts and folders i had on my desktop, and placed everything under HP ADMINSTRATION.

I GREATLY APPRECIATE YOUR HELP BELAHZUR! i still have a few small issues going on that i will update you with, once i re-install a few of my programs.

Try re-installing .net framework.
Or uninstall it if you don't use it.
