Hi

I’m new to the forum and hope you can help me with this problem. Apologies, if I am posting in the wrong forum – please advise the correct forum to post in

I have AVG free Anti Virus installed on my PC and it runs as a scheduled task at 1.00 am every morning. I check the results when I get up in the morning. On the 7th Feb AVG froze overnight. I could not do anything except reboot the computer. The same happened on the 8th Feb.

I uninstalled AVG and installed Avira Anti Vir Personal. This ran 2 days running and found no detections. However, on the 3 day this froze as well. On the advice of a colleague I downloaded, and installed AVG Free Anti Rootkit. This completed a scan but found nothing. I then did the same with Malware bytes Anti-Malware and this scan completed with 2 items found that I removed. I then reinstalled AVG Free Anti Virus and this froze again.

Next, I tried Avast and this also froze my PC. Finally, I tried PC Tools Anti Virus 5 Free and this froze my PC as well.

All other software on my PC seems to be running OK but I have been unable to complete an Anti Virus scan on my PC for 9 days and haven’t a clue what is causing the problem – any ideas.

Below, I’ve posted a HijackThis log from today

Thanks in anticipation of some guidance on this issue

Graham

I don't believe this is caused by malware.
Rather, there is a lot running at startup that doesn't need to be.

We can stop some of these from running if you'd like.
Let me know.

Hi

I'm prepared to try anything at the moment to get my Anti Virus back working. One point though, I have been running AVG free successfully for a number of years with no problems until 10 days ago

descriptionComputer Freezes during Virus Scan EmptyRe: Computer Freezes during Virus Scan

Meh. AVG is full of problems anyway, it randomly corrupted itself on me last week and wouldn't run at all.

  • Open HijackThis
  • Choose "Do a system scan only"
  • Check the boxes in front of these lines:

  • Press "Fix Checked"
  • Close Hijack This.

Reboot normally.
Any faster now?

descriptionComputer Freezes during Virus Scan EmptyRe: Computer Freezes during Virus Scan

I've done as you asked. The reboot was not any faster than usual. However a number of icons have disappeared from the notification area - which is no bad thing

I tried running Avira AntiVir Personal - Free Antivirus, which I currently have installed. This froze after 23 mins having got as far as 43.8%. When I rebooted my PC it froze again at Windows start up. However, it rebooted OK the 2nd time

Task Manager shows 37 processes running whereas there were 48 before. What next?

descriptionComputer Freezes during Virus Scan EmptyRe: Computer Freezes during Virus Scan

Well as I said, I don't think this is malware related, crashing could be just because this machine is old/low amount of RAM/full hardrive, etc.

But lets have a look around to be sure.

  • Please download DDS by sUBs to your Desktop (Important!!) from one of these locations:
    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3
  • Double click DDS.scr to run
  • When complete, DDS.txt will open.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste DDS.txt back here, I don't need to see attach.txt.

Hello.
There's something we can fix here, but I need to see something first.

  • Now open a new notepad file.
  • Input this into the notepad file:

    regedit /e peek1.txt "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.reg"
    regedit /e peek2.txt "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\regfile"
    type peek1.txt >> look.txt
    type peek2.txt >> look.txt
    del peek*.txt
    start notepad look.txt

  • Save this as look.bat, save it to your desktop.
  • Double click look.bat to run it.
  • Copy and paste the report back here.

Hello.

Download this file XP reg file fix
Download the file to your DESKTOP otherwise this next fix won't work.

  • Extract .reg file.
  • Then press Start > Run, type in cmd and press enter.
  • When the command prompt opens, type this in:

    reg import "C:\Documents and Settings\G Powers\Desktop\xp_regfile.reg"

  • The quote marks are needed, so type exactly as seen.
  • It should say "Operating successful"
  • Close the command prompt.

Please download the OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer.

  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it.
  • Copy the bolded text below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    :services
    jgameenp

    :files
    C:\Documents and Settings\G Powers\Desktop\dds.com
    C:\Documents and Settings\G Powers\Desktop\xp_regfile.zip
    C:\Documents and Settings\G Powers\Desktop\xp_regfile.reg

    :commands
    [emptytemp]
    [reboot]

  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste instructions for items to be Moved" window (under the light blue bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.

At the end of the first part the command window appears for a split second and then disappears before I can read anything. Do I continue with the second part?

Hello.
Not yet.

Did it close after you typed in the commmand and hit enter?

descriptionComputer Freezes during Virus Scan EmptyRe: Computer Freezes during Virus Scan

more_horiz
Yes it did

descriptionComputer Freezes during Virus Scan EmptyRe: Computer Freezes during Virus Scan

Okay, try the command again and see if it closes this time. The command should go through even though it closes.
If it does, go onto OTMoveIt script.

descriptionComputer Freezes during Virus Scan EmptyRe: Computer Freezes during Virus Scan

It closed again before I could read anything but I will carry on as you suggest

hi

I am now posting from my girlfriend's laptop. After posting the OTMoveIt3 log my computer froze. I rebooted and it froze at Windows startup. I tried again and it froze again at Windows startup. The third attempt it got to the desktop and froze. It did the same at the 4th attempt. The 5th attempt froze at the blue Welcome screen. I've turned it off now. Any further advice would be really helpful

Hmmm.
This isn't a malware issue, but we haven't caused this neither.

How much RAM does this machine have?

descriptionComputer Freezes during Virus Scan EmptyRe: Computer Freezes during Virus Scan

I understand that and appreciate your help. Hopefully you can get me back up and running. It has 1GB

I am now back on my PC. I think I was rebooting too quickly. I've left it for an hour and it has started 1st time Smile... . I will try a scan overnight and let you know how it gets on.

Many thanks for your time, help and support

Ah, was just about to post. LMBO or ROFL
Okay, let it run and see what happens.

Hi

When I got up this morning my PC had frozen at 52.8% of the Avira Anti Vir scan. I switched off and left it for 20 mins Smile... and when I rebooted it was fine. In fact it seems to be running a bit faster now.

I am at work now but any further advice on how to solve my problem would be greatly appreciated

I think I've done all I can now.
Slowness isn't malware related and is probably more hardware related.

If you post in our hardware section and post your system specs, I'm sure one of our staff members will drop by. I specialize more in software than in hardware.

Ok. I'll try there. Thanks for all you help up to now.
