Hello. Can I ask please, what AV are ou using? because I don't see ANY signs of an AV in the log.

  • Open HijackThis
  • Choose "Do a system scan only"
  • Check the boxes in front of these lines:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4EFB-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
    O18 - Filter hijack: text/html - {5e43ae04-b813-4abc-9308-d08acb15fd1d} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mst122.dll
    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: swrrio.dll , hqsitn.dll

  • Press "Fix Checked"
  • Close Hijack This.

Please download and run this tool.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Post the contents of the MBAM Log.

I did what you said on the hijackthis, then clicked on the link you shared for malwarebytes. I couldn't connect to the webpage at all, it just said "Internet Explorer Cannot Display the Webpage".

Rootkit is blocking us, lets remove it.

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop
Link: HERE or HERE.

  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop
2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mst122.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\swrrio.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hqsitn.dll

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

  • Under "Input script here:", paste in the script from the quote box above.
  • Leave the ticked box "Scan for rootkit" ticked.
  • Then tick "Disable any rootkits found"
  • Now click on the Execute to begin execution of the script.
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

The Avenger will automatically do the following:

  • It will Restart your computer.
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
4. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

The first time I tried this everything went well until the restart - then my computer stalled at the "Windows is shutting down" screen for a VERY long time. I eventually had to do a hard reboot (or whatever it is called), where I held down the button on the front of the tower until it turned off. On restart there was no log file, so I followed the instructions again and this time the reboot worked. However, I'm noting that the logfile looks like they tried to delete those files but they were already missing from the first attempt. Here is my log file:

Meh, don't care about them files, they are harmless and will fall to almost any tool used.
The avenger has done what is needed, give MBAM website a test now, see if it works.

OK! I sucessfully downloaded, installed, and ran malwarebytes! The problem seems to be gone, although (and I'm not sure if this is part of the original problem) I still get some folders opening on start-up and I'm not sure why. It's "Common" and "System32". If this is normal, or easily fixed, I would appreciate any ideas. Also, are there some steps I should take so this won't happen again?

Oh, and of course, THANK YOU!!! You are my hero today!

I've seen that happen once before on another malware removal forum, and I saved the fix that was used, so we can try it here.
Lets make sure the malware is gone though.

Okay.
Two things for you to do, then I think we can say were done here.

In my first post on your thread, I asked what AV you were using and you didn't answer, surfing without an AV is important, otherwise you'll be back here before ya know it.

Second, run and post a new DDS log so I can see them files are gone.

Oh, sorry!! I totally forgot you asked that before. I used to have McAfee before all of this started, but in my (stupid) quest to fix this problem I thought that it was making things worse. I will be re-installing as soon as possible, unless you have a better recommendation. Here is my log file:

Hello.

I posted a HJT fix here which should fix the system32 opening on startup problem, did you do that before you did the OTMoveIt?
If not, please do so now.
http://www.geekpolice.net/virus-spyware-malware-removal-f11/gogoogle-virus-problem-t6473.htm#39599

Install ONLY ONE!! of these two AV's below.

1) Antivir PersonalEditionClassic
-Free anti-virus software for Windows.
-Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition
-Anti-virus program for Windows.
-The home edition is freeware for noncommercial user.

Please open OTMoveIt again, press the green CleanUp! button.
When asked to reboot, select yes.
I don't need to see any log it gives you, and after reboot, the system32 problem should be gone assuming you followed the HJT fix in the link in this post.

I did do the HJT fix, plus installed the Avira AV program. Then I did the OTMoveit clean up, rebooted, and there was still the System32 and Common folders open at start up. Not sure what this means...

descriptiongo.google virus problem EmptyRe: go.google virus problem

Could be that HJT isn't fixing the items properly.

  • Now open a new notepad file.
  • Input this into the notepad file:

    regedit /e peek1.txt "HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run"
    type peek1.txt >> look.txt
    del peek1.txt
    start notepad look.txt

  • Save this as look.bat, save it to your desktop.
  • Double click look.bat to run it.
  • Copy and paste the report back here.

I think it was because how the value was formatted, maybe HJT didn't like it and couldn't fix it correctly.

I see you have Adobe Reader version 7 installed on this machine, this is old and has holes malware can use to abuse to re-infect you, so we need to close these holes.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

  • Adobe Reader 7
Then download and install version 9 from here:
http://get.adobe.com/uk/reader/

We need to make a new restore point.

To turn off System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (or the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box), and then click OK.
4. Click Yes when you receive the prompt to the turn off System Restore.

Now we need to make a new restore point.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
I also recommand the following add-ons for Firefox, they will help keep you safe from malicious scripts or activeX exploits.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/433

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

To help you keep your software updated, please considering using this free software program that will check for program updates.
Update Checker

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or
Outpost
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. Big Grin
