Backdoor.Tidserv!inf & w32.Tidserv

hello,

i've seen numerous post on this particular malware/virus. basically, i decided to download a license & update for my RealPlayer, and that's pretty much where my problem started. i have Norton 360, and spyware doctor, both of which picked up the virus after it was downloaded. spyware doctor gave me 2 popups blocking a malicious site (ip addy 85.255.113.204). once i clicked "always block," my internet explorer began going crazy. the ONLY website that would work was google...and i also had a strange little image in my address bar (looked like a slice of pizza). my google searches would bring back results just fine, but whenever i clicked one...i'd get an "internet explorer error."

i ran a system scan in norton 360, and it told me to "manually remove" 2 viruses:
backdoor.Tidserv!inf
w32.Tidserv

i had a similar problem about a year ago, and i used hijackthis, smithfraudfix, ccleaner, and also downloaded spyware doctor (which is great for blocking annoying popups). naturally...i attempted to run smithfraud and ccleaner (prior to getting advice from anyone) and norton is no longer finding those 2 particular viruses, but my internet explorer still has an error...which leads me to believe that the problem(s) still exist. luckily i have another computer which allows me to post my info on here (incase anyone was curious as to how i got online).

I strongly recommend you to remove Ask from your computer because it do this:

• Promoting its toolbars on sites targeted to kids.
  
• Promoting its toolbars through ads that appear to be part of other companies' sites.
  
• Promoting its toolbars through other companies' spyware.
  
• Installing without any disclosure whatsoever and without any consent whatsoever.
  
• Soliciting installations via "deceptive door openers" that do not accurately describe the offer; failing to affirmatively show a license agreement; linking to a EULA via an off-screen link.
  
• Making confusing changes to users' browsers -- increasing Ask's revenues while taking users to pages they didn't intend to visit.

I suggest you remove the program now.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

• Viewpoint
  
• Viewpoint Manager
  
• Viewpoint Media Player
  
• Viewpoint Toolbar
  

Now lets make sure that Viewpoint is fully gone from the system.

• Next, please download ViewpointKiller by Prm753 from here.
  
• Save it to a permanent folder (such as C:/ViewpointKiller) and unzip it there.
  
• Open ViewpointKiller, and press the Start button.
  
• A log will be produced in the same folder where you unzipped it to. Please post the contents of that log in your reply.
  

belahzur, thank you very much for responding so quickly. i did everything you asked...removed the ask toolbar and viewpoint. i had a slight problem deleting th actual asksbar folder. i received a popup when i tried to delete it "cannot delete asksbar.dll access denied. make sure the disk isn't full or write protected & the file is not currently in use". i'm still not able to get online (via internet explorer...haven't tried any other i-net browser yet).

• First, download it to your desktop.
  
• Now double click it to run it and will tell it you what to do when you open it.
  
• It will temporarily kill explorer.exe and your desktop will go blank.
  
• Let Flash_Disinfector do it's job and it will restart explorer.exe for you.
  
• It will make a dummy autorun.inf in the root of every drive.
• You can now delete Flash_Disinfector.exe.

glad i came back...i actually noticed that "msq...." was still in my registry, and came to ask you how to remove it. it's been removed now.

i'm not sure if it's relative or not, but ever since this thing attacked my computer, my printer hasn't been working. it powers up fine (of course), but anything i attempt to print gets an "error." i'm just wondering if there was a way my printer driver became infected, and it's still hiding there some kind of way?

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java:

• Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11.
  
• Select the first option where it says "Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11".
  
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
  
• In the Window that opens, select your platform and language, check the "agree" box, and click Continue.
  
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  
• Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.

We need to make a new restore point.

To turn off System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (or the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box), and then click OK.
4. Click Yes when you receive the prompt to the turn off System Restore.

Now we need to make a new restore point.
To turn on System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (To turn on System Restore), and then click OK.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers.

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:

I also recommand the following add-ons for Firefox, they will help keep you safe from malicious scripts or activeX exploits.

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.
