Hello all. I've got a bug and can't identify or get rid of it. It's been pestering me for almost 2 weeks now. I've gotten a browser highjacker or something. Here is a list of the lovely things it does:
1. redirects links from google or yahoo search results.
2. blocks web site access to any and all anti-virus/malware site.
3. I was running AVG free when it walked in the door and wasn't detected.
4. I downloaded hijackthis to an external drive via my laptop and transfered it to my infected machine, was able to install in safemode but it won't allow the program to actually run.(same experience with another scanner or 2 OR just won't let the setup file run)
5. Windows Defender actually installed and ran, but did not detect it.
6. I found an older version of Spytrap on an old HD, it finally ran and didn't find anything.
7. Tonight the Norton that I reactivated(came with PC when purchased a few months ago) magically managed to connect to update server and then scanned. It found and quarantined "backdoor.Tidserv", main problem still exists.
8. Won't allow a "system recovery" cd to be made. The burn application tells me that no recovery partition is found.(it's there, I can see it)
9. Won't allow use of "system restore" feature.

Needless to say, I've had thoughts of using a 6-8 month old PC for target practice. (Gunsmoke) I can't afford to do that!

I stumbled accross your site and did some reading here and you guys seem to be pretty helpfull. If you can help me, I'd be eternally greatfull! Cheers Mate

Hi Endall,
I am going to be covering for our main tech while he is away. When he gets back, he will probably take over.

First of all, I would like to ask you to read this topic, then post your hijack this log back here.

Thank you, and I hope to hear from you soon! Bow or Thanks

Hey, thanks for the reply. As I stated in my original post, I can't get HJT to actually run. It completed the install, but whatever it is that's hampering my system won't let me actually RUN HJT. It's very frustrating. I've tried pretty much everything I could think of, all to no end. I've also tried to run it in safemode, which is how I got it to install but it wouldn't run there either.

Hello.
Thanks Jerry.

Endall -

Please download SilentRunners from here:
http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.zip
Unzip it to the desktop and double-click on it. If you get any kind of warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run. When the scan is finished, a message will pop up and a logfile will have been created on the desktop. Please post the entire contents of this logfile for me to see.

Ok, here's the report that Silent Runners generated. I'll await further instructions. Thanks!

I had to break it into pieces.

Hello. Yep, lets try it this way.

Now open a new notepad file.
Input this into the notepad file:

start cmd
cd\
attrib autorun.inf -s -h -r
del autorun.inf
d:
attrib autorun.inf -s -h -r
del autorun.inf

Save this as fix.bat, save it to your desktop.
Double click fix.bat and the black cmd window will open (I think 2 may open, tested this myself)
One will have "delete autorun.inf y/n", this is the one we want. Close the other.
Type y and press enter.

Can you run Hijack This now?

I bet it blocks this website too.

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop
Link: HERE.

  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop
2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Files to delete:
D:\autorun.inf

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

  • Under "Input script here:", paste in the script from the quote box above.
  • Leave the ticked box "Scan for rootkit" ticked.
  • Then tick "Disable any rootkits found"
  • Now click on the Execute to begin execution of the script.
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

The Avenger will automatically do the following:

  • It will Restart your computer.
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

Save this as CFScript.txt, save it to your desktop also.
Then drag and drop CFScript.txt into combofix as seen below:
at wit's end and need help Sfxdaw

This will open combofix.exe again, agree to it's terms and allow it to run, it may want to reboot after it's done. Post the resulting log back here.

as you can see by the log, I missed the part about removing SpySubtract first... seems that it was taken care of anyway.

Tis okay, CF removed it's folder along with it's files, so that is gone.

How is the machine running now?

much better thanks!!! I haven't noticed anything like what was going on. It's so nice to end up on the page for the link you clicked in a google search and not bounced to who-knows-where.

I am so happy I found this site. You have been the MOST help I've ever gotten for any such problem!

I don't know how to thank you for the help. I know I'm gonna keep a book mark for the site and will direct others I may come accross with similar problems here.

Now, one more question... What's a decent anti-virus/malare package to run? I was using AVG Free at the time I became infected, so my confidence is a bit low with it now. I'm currently running a trial version of Norton. Should I just spend the money and stick with it or is there something better out there?

Hello.
In my opinion - Norton drags the system down because it's a large program, I would stick with AVG, much smaller and lighter on the system.

We need to make a new restore point.

To turn off System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (or the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box), and then click OK.
4. Click Yes when you receive the prompt to the turn off System Restore.

Now we need to make a new restore point.
To turn on System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.

3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (To turn on System Restore), and then click OK.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
I also recommand the following add-ons for Firefox, they will help keep you safe from malicious scripts or activeX exploits.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or
Outpost
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. Big Grin
