I am running symantec antivirus corporate edition 10.1 and it has found more then one infection. The ones it has listed are as follows...

Backdoor.Tidserv
Trojan Horse
Backdoor.Tidserv!inf
HACKTOOL

I have tried to quarantine them, but from time to time it tells me it found another in /Local Settings/Temp, which leads me to believe that I have a root kit? Not really sure. I am computer
literate more then most, but am new to viruses.

Here is my highjack this log...

Hello.
Nothing obvious showing in the log.

Use this to clean the bad temp files:

Download ATF Cleaner

  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • Close ATF-Cleaner.exe.

Now lets see what's going on.

  • Download combofix from here, use the top links - combofix.exe
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

Hello SKIN.
I notice you have more than one AV (Anti-virus) running, both Symantec and AVG.
Running two AV's is a bad idea, they conflict and cause more problems than they fix.
Please uninstall one of them by Pressing Start > Control Panel > Add/remove programs.

Now open a new notepad file.
Input this into the notepad file:

File::
c:\windows\system32\TDSSlxwp.dll

Save this as CFScript.txt, save it to your desktop also.
Then drag and drop CFScript.txt into combofix as seen below:
HJT Log, Numerous Infections found by SAV CORP Sfxdaw

This will open combofix.exe again, agree to it's terms and allow it to run, it may want to reboot after it's done. Post the resulting log back here.

Before I ran combofix, I could not get to control panal, or add remove. After I ran Combo fix, Now I can get to add/remove. I have removed AVG.

I will run combofix again as you stated and then post back.

Thanks for the help.

Hello.
I'm glad there is an improvement. Smile...
I will be waiting for your return.

The system.exe file was still on my thumbdrive but I deleted it using my mac.

That took out the autorun.inf files.
Now lets prevent this from happening again.
Keep all the external drives plugged in and do this:

You have or had what has been identified as a flash drive infection.

Please download Flash_Disinfector from HERE

  • First, download it to your desktop.
  • Now double click it to run it and will tell it you what to do when you open it.
  • It will temporarily kill explorer.exe and your desktop will go blank.
  • Let Flash_Disinfector do it's job and it will restart explorer.exe for you.
  • It will make a dummy autorun.inf in the root of every drive.
  • You can now delete Flash_Disinfector.exe.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or
Outpost
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. Big Grin
