Copied this from the other topic:

It would not let me delete the svchost.exe.

Hard to get a connection to the download of Combofix as all the sites were blocked. Finally got an older version. It detected a Rootkit and indicated it needed to shut down the computer. It is now shutting down and I'm waiting to go from here.

Okay, lets try this.

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop
Link: HERE.

  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop
2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\svchost.exe

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

  • Under "Input script here:", paste in the script from the quote box above.
  • Leave the ticked box "Scan for rootkit" ticked.
  • Don't tick the box below.
  • Now click on the Execute to begin execution of the script.
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

The Avenger will automatically do the following:

  • It will Restart your computer.
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

I am currently running the combofix and it has completed Stage_50.

It said there was a later version, tried to update it, but the update site was blocked.

By running the combofix without deleting the svchost, will that cause a problem?

It has now generated the log...

Now I can at least access the websites that were previously blocked. Should I download and run the later version of the Combofix?

descriptionspyware.ispynow problems EmptyRe: spyware.ispynow problems

more_horiz
Hello.
Please download the latest version of combofix to your Desktop (Important!!), but do not run it yet.

Now open a new notepad file.
Input this into the notepad file:

Registry::
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\D]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{14000763-2337-11db-aa2f-806d6172696f}]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\ControlSet002\Services\TDSSserv.sys]

Save this as CFScript.txt, save it to your desktop also.
Then drag and drop CFScript.txt into combofix as seen below:
spyware.ispynow problems Sfxdaw

This will open combofix.exe again, agree to it's terms and allow it to run, it may want to reboot after it's done. Post the resulting log back here.

descriptionspyware.ispynow problems EmptyRe: spyware.ispynow problems

more_horiz
What does this do?

descriptionspyware.ispynow problems EmptyRe: spyware.ispynow problems

more_horiz
It's a special way of running combofix, it will read the txt file and remove the leftovers shown in the CF log from the first run.

descriptionspyware.ispynow problems EmptyRe: spyware.ispynow problems

Should I have my ANti Virus or Anti spy ware turned off as I do all of this?

descriptionspyware.ispynow problems EmptyRe: spyware.ispynow problems

more_horiz
No, AVG shouldn't interfere.

descriptionspyware.ispynow problems EmptyRe: spyware.ispynow problems

So this last step will get rid of the [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\D]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{14000763-2337-11db-aa2f-806d6172696f}]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\ControlSet002\Services\TDSSserv.sys] ?

This is all so "geek" to me, and I just want to understand a little bit about what is happening with this.

Thanks for everything, BTW...I'm just trying to learn a little bit and understand what you're helping me do here. It's appreciated.

descriptionspyware.ispynow problems EmptyRe: spyware.ispynow problems

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\D]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{14000763-2337-11db-aa2f-806d6172696f}]

They are both USB mountpoints, usually caused by flash drive infections, they make autorun.inf files in the root of every drive, CF deleted one of them from D:
D:\Autorun.inf

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\ControlSet002\Services\TDSSserv.sys]

This is a leftover service of the tdssserv rootkit.

descriptionspyware.ispynow problems EmptyRe: spyware.ispynow problems

more_horiz
My D drive is my HP recovery partition....is that an issue?

descriptionspyware.ispynow problems EmptyRe: spyware.ispynow problems

more_horiz
No, the malware placed an autorun.inf file there so the malware was launched every time you opened D. CF has removed this now, nothing to worry about.

Everything appears to be fine, although it appeared that way prior to re-running the updated CF.

Again, thanks so much!

How do people know how to do these viruses/trojans and why would they do something like they appear to be doing with a lot of other people's computers? It just seems like a very mean and evil thing. I can maybe understand a pop-up message or two, but actually reconfiguring computers seems, well, malicious! I guess that's why they call it malware!?!?!

Correct. Smile...
I don't know why they do it, but they do.

We need to make a new restore point.

2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (or the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box), and then click OK.

=====
Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or
Outpost
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. Big Grin

IS AVG just an antivirus or is it a spyware also? Is it a good one?

Should I use all of those recommended spyware programs or just one?

I only use Firefox...

What do you know about COMODO?

Doesn't Windows provide a Firewall? Is that no good?

What about the Norton programs? Lots of popularity, but not sure if they're any good.

descriptionspyware.ispynow problems EmptyRe: spyware.ispynow problems

more_horiz
AVG is an anti-virus only.
Just use one or two of the programs recommended.
Comodo Firewall - I kow lots who use it and I recommend you use it too.

Windows comes with a firewall, but it's not as strong as something like Comodo

Norton - Yes, hugely popular, but can really slow down the system.

Please make sure the new version of Java is installed before you run JavaRa.

Please download JavaRa from here

  • First, unzip it.
  • Then run JavaRa.
  • Select English from the drop down menu and press Select.
  • This will open JavaRa.
