Considering how often this one's popped up in the last few days I looked for a guide that'd help. Or even better a tool. Like most folks, tried the usual things. McAfee scans turn up nothing. I was able to get Malwarebytes' Anti-malware to install when I actually launched and ran it from the browser, never from the downloaded location. And I've yet to get it to run at all.

Here's the HJT log:

Hello.
Since you already have MBAM on your system, we'll start there.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Post the contents of the MBAM Log with a fresh copy of HijackThis log.

Err... I've yet to get the program to run. I just mentioned that I was able to install it when the installer was launched by the browser. Twice I tried installing, first time I got to the screen you were talking about and it hung after I checked both boxes. Second time it hung before it got to that point (the second time is when I installed it to the "dumbthing" folder that I saw supposedly loads on restart).

I couldn't even get to malwarebytes website, but I was able to view a google cache of the site and use the download links from there.

I'll try some more to get MBAM to run, but not sure I'll be able to.

Hello.
You probably have the tdssserv rootkit.
I want to run a test to find out, but I need you to make a dummy file for us.
Right click anywhere on the desktop > open the "new" menu > make a Text Document (.txt file) and name it test.txt.

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop
Link: HERE.

  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop
2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Files to delete:
C:\Documents and Settings\[*USERNAME EDITED OUT*]\Desktop\test.txt

Please re-insert your machine username where you have edited it out otherwise this will fail.

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

  • Under "Input script here:", paste in the script from the quote box above.
  • Leave the ticked box "Scan for rootkit" ticked.
  • Don't tick the box below.
  • Now click on the Execute to begin execution of the script.
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

The Avenger will automatically do the following:

  • It will Restart your computer.
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply along with a fresh HJT log.

It kept hanging and took a half dozen restarts but it's as you expected.

There's the rootkit.
Lets attack it.

2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Drivers to disable:
TDSSserv.sys

Drivers to delete:
TDSSserv.sys

Files to delete:
C:\windows\system32\drivers\TDSSmhlt.sys

5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

Is there any reason I shouldn't now run a full MBAM scan? Or antivirus scan?

My impulse is to do it, but I figured you've been incredibly helpful so far, might as well wait to hear your advice.

descriptionspyware.ispynow help please EmptyRe: spyware.ispynow help please

more_horiz
No, MBAM may not remove it all.
The rootkit is gone, so you can access combofix now.

  • Download combofix from here, use the top links - combofix.exe
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

    spyware.ispynow help please Rcauto10

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

    spyware.ispynow help please Whatne10

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

I've tried half a dozen different ways to download ComboFix and it's not letting me, no matter what it's named. Not even on an uninfected machine. (On that one it's the McAfee that keeps deleting ComboFix after download, claiming it's "Remadm-proclaunch!171")

But since MABM was actually able to run for the first time, I did a quick scan. Here's the log after I told it to toast the infected bits:

Does ComboFix normally setoff anti-virus/anti-spyware software?

descriptionspyware.ispynow help please EmptyRe: spyware.ispynow help please

more_horiz
Sometimes yes, combofix has alot of parts to it, to make it run so perfectly.
But because of what some of these parts do, it makes AV's go crazy.
MBAM deleted abit, what problems remain?

descriptionspyware.ispynow help please EmptyRe: spyware.ispynow help please

Updated the MBAM database and ran another QuickScan. Found 3 more files that have been removed:

C:\Documents and Settings\[*USERNAME*]\Application Data\Google\runhh6110411.exe (Trojan.FakeAlert) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
C:\Documents and Settings\[*USERNAME*]\Application Data\Google\mscscc.dll (Trojan.FakeAlert) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
C:\Documents and Settings\[*USERNAME*]\nah_iyuu.exe (Trojan.FakeAlert) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

Now I'm gonna try disabling McAfee's protection and running ComboFix.

Okie. ComboFix ran, and then as soon as it finished booting McAfee protection restarted and deleted combofix.exe.

Seems smooth to me. Thanks a ton for all this.

It's impressive you've got techs here helping out on these forums that as far as I can tell are purely ad-driven (a.k.a. free).

Thanks a bunch. Any way to tell what it was that got this system infected? Just so I can warn the guy to not do it again.

Hello.
Glad to hear it's running fine. Smile...
Before I can let you go, we need to get you secured.

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java:

  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 10.
  • Select the first option where it says "Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 10".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • In the Window that opens, select your platform and language, check the "agree" box, and click Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    - Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    - J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    - J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u10-windows-i586-p.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.
Please make sure the new version of Java is installed before you run JavaRa.

Please download JavaRa from here

  • First, unzip it.
  • Then run JavaRa.
  • Select English from the drop down menu and press Select.
  • This will open JavaRa.
  • Press Remove older versions
  • Press yes to the prompt.
  • It will make a log file of what it's removed.
  • Copy and paste the log back here.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or
Outpost
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. Big Grin
