I see you've uninstalled AVG8 and install Sophos.
I also see Zonealarm. Zonealarm has caused alot of problems in the past, uninstall it and see what happens.
====

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java:

  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 update 7.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • In the Window that opens, select your platform and language, check the "agree" box, and click Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    - Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    - J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    - J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.

===

Once you've uninstall the old version of Java, and installed the new version, please do this:

Please download JavaRa from here

  • First, unzip it.
  • Then run JavaRa.
  • Select English from the drop down menu and press Select.
  • This will open JavaRa.
  • Press Remove older versions
  • Press yes to the prompt.
  • It will make a log file of what it's removed.
  • Copy and paste the log back here along with a fresh copy of Hijack This log.

Save this as Fixservices.bat, save it to your desktop.
Double click Fixservices.bat and the black cmd window will open and close, this is normal.

Can you access Sophos websites/other antivirus websites now Zonealarm is gone?

Hi,

I still cannot access any antivirus websties (I am just redirected to random search engines). Sophos needs to be updated as it is only recently installed and won't scan until it is. When I click update a box appears and says there are no files to download, then it says "Installing Sophos Anti-virus..", then it just closes and I still can't scan... When I right click on he Sophos icon (on te taskbar) it only allows me to click on "Update now".

Okay.
I'm asking a colleague for a second opinion.

For now, do this, follow this path to the hosts file.
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Double click hosts and you'll get a menu with what to open it with, select Notepad, it will open the hosts file.
Copy and paste everything inside it back here.

Sad tearing

Okay, lets try this, see if it finds any leftovers we might have missed.
If it comes back clean, we know it's not a virus causing this.

Please download and run this tool.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Post the contents of the MBAM Log with a fresh copy of HijackThis log.

I guess you won't be able to access this either. Evil or enraged

Please run a free online scan with Kaspersky AntiVirus (works only with MS Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher).
Go to http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner and click the "Kaspersky Online Scanner" button (NOT "Kaspersky File Scanner").

  • In the new window that opens, click the "Accept" button to accept the user agreement, install the ActiveX control, and download the program.
  • When you get the Windows dialog asking if you want to install this software, click the "Install" button.
  • When the "Update progress" line changes to "Ready" and the "NEXT ->" button lights up with a green arrow, click it.
  • Click on the "Scan Settings" button, and in the next window select the "extended" database, and click Ok.
  • Under "Please select a target to scan:", click My Computer to start the scan.
When the scan is finished, click the "Save as Text" button, and save the file as kavscan.txt to your Desktop, close the Kaspersky On-line Scanner window, and post the text in kavscan.txt in your next reply.

This is actually quite annoying now.

Close MBAM in Task Manager.
Download combofix from here

Once downloaded, rename it to combo-fix.exe.
Double click it to run it, follow the prompts and post the resulting log.

Since running this I can now access antivirus websites, but Sophos Antivirus has disappeared completely from my system!!! ??

descriptionCan't access antivirus update, etc. EmptyRe: Can't access antivirus update, etc.

Don't worry about Sophos for now.
We have bigger issues, just do not surf the internet until we are done.

Your system is serverly compromised. Combofix took down a horrible rootkit, it has backdoor functions and steals passwords/personal information. If you do any online banking (Ebay, Paypal, etc) you need to get to a clean machine and change any passwords.
====

Now open a new notepad file.
Input this into the notepad file:

Save this as CFScript.txt, save it to your desktop also.
Then drag and drop CFScript.txt into combofix as seen below:
Can't access antivirus update, etc. Sfxdaw

This will open combofix.exe again, agree to it's terms and allow it to run, it may want to reboot after it's done. Post the resulting log back here.

You can do if you want, but you don't have to.
====

To Unhide Files and folders:

  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect "Show hidden files and folders".
  • Check the "Show hidden files and folders" option.
  • Hit the "Apply To All Folders" option.
  • Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

Delete this file in bold:
C:\sqmnoopt03.sqm
===

Download ATF Cleaner

  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • Close ATF-Cleaner.exe.

====

Lastly, do this.
Start > Run
Type in: ComboFix /u then press enter.
This will uninstall Combofix.
====

How's the machine now? Is Sophos still on your machine?

Hi there,

First of all, thank you very much for your help - I took my laptop to PC World and they thought it was a motherboard problem!?!?!?

I can't uninstall combofix - a message pops up saying it cannot be found is it ok to just delete the combo fix files and folder?

Machine seems to be ok, and Sophos is back and working (doing a scan now).

Is there anything else I need to do? Is it all fine?

Oh btw, when I boot it up an error message appears that reads 'Cant find HotKey' or something like that.

Dan

The combofix error - Probably my bad spelling. LMBO or ROFL
You can delete these.
C:\Combofix
C:\Quarantine
And the combo-fix.exe on the desktop.
And any logs it made.

Thank you for staying with me, I wouldn't let tdssserv beat me this time.

And the hotkey problem.

Now open a new notepad file.
Input this into the notepad file:
QUOTE

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\00THotkey]

Save this as fix.reg, save it to your desktop.
Double click fix.reg and select yes to the merge with registry prompt.

That should fix that problem.

Thank again for your help, I don't know what I would have done otherwise (probably would have given PC World £200 - for a motherboard or something!!)

Everything looks great --- your HijackThis log appears to be clean. Smile...
Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are ZoneAlarm, Kerio, or
Outpost
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. Big Grin
