Hey all, I'm helping my brother-in-law with his computer. His wife downloaded more than one virus. I've run housecall and removed some, I've run malwarebytes and removed some (60 something), I've attempted to get the anti-virus Avast back up and running to scan. Bottom line, whatever it is is beyond me. Now it won't load windows at all accept to a black screen with some of the familiar clear shadow bar and one or two icons on the bottom right. Nothing more. I tried to do a system restore to about a month ago. Once from the computer at restart, and again from a Windows repair disk. It says that several files are corrupt and cannot complete the restore. When I first turned on the computer, Windows wanted to update. It said 1 of 98 updating. I let it sit overnight and it was still on 1 of 98. I have a Windows 7 repair disk (64 bit) mentioned above. I'm sure it's a tool you might be able to use. I am on the computer now using an Ubuntu Live CD. I'd like to get all the pictures from the windows portion to a flash drive before doing anything if it's at all possible. Thanks so much for your help!

Hello and welcome to GeekPolice.Net My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer.

1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.

Use you Ubuntu to save all your important data. Next, can you boot in Safe Mode?

1) I don't know how to use Ubuntu to save any data at all. Pictures are the only things that are important. Can you walk me through that step before we get started? If something happens and it's needed to wipe the computer clean I can without a problem.
2) I don't think I can boot into windows at all. The only option it was giving me was to try and fix windows at start up by doing a system restore and for some reason that didn't take. I am on the computer right now using the Ubuntu live CD.

Ok, when you're in the computer using the Live CD go to where you have saved your pictures and then copy them to a memory stick.

I've tried that. Why don't we get started. I appreciate everything you guys do and I don't want to waste your valuable time on that. Can't boot into save mode. Where do we go from there?

Since you can't boot in Safe Mode there's only one other thing we can do.

We are going to be using a Windows Recovery Environment to help disinfect the system so it may boot again.

Download the OTLPE Standard REATOGO Windows Recovery Environment.

  • Place a blank CD-R disc in to your CD burning drive.
  • Download OTLPEStd.exe and double-click on it to burn to a CD using an ISO Burner. One can be found here.
  • Reboot your system using the boot CD you just created.
  • Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
  • Your system should now display a REATOGO-X-PE desktop.
  • Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
  • When asked "Do you wish to load the remote registry", select Yes
  • When asked "Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning", select Yes
  • Ensure the box "Automatically Load All Remaining Users" is checked and press OK
  • OTL should now start. Change the following settings
  • Change Drivers to Non-Microsoft
  • Press Run Scan to start the scan.
  • When finished, the file will be saved in drive C:\_OTL\MovedFiles
  • Copy this file to your USB drive if you do not have internet connection on this system
  • Please post the contents of the OTL.txt file in your reply.

That's what I get when trying to download the ISO.

This is what I get when trying to download the Windows Recovery Environment.

I'm sorry for the delay in response. I've been studying for my midterm on Wednesday.

I don't have a problem downloading the file. Did you try it on another computer?
