I've tried everything I can, from killing unused processes to running CCleaner. Ran MBAM, it only found one thing, which I did put on my computer (It was an installer for a program that also had some PUP options that I didn't take when I installed - didn't need the installer anymore anyway), Ran Adw, too, and it didn't find much, either. I'm totally at my wits end, please help! I can't think of anything else it could be other than malware of some kind.

Hello and welcome to GeekPolice.Net My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer.

1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.
*****************************************************************
Malwarebytes' Anti-Rootkit

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Rootkit and save it to your desktop.

  • Be sure to print out and follow the instructions provided on that same page for performing a scan.
  • Caution: This is a beta version so also read the disclaimer and back up all your data before using.
  • When the scan completes, click on the Cleanup button to remove any threats found and reboot the computer if prompted to do so.
  • Perform another scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit to verify that no threats remain. If they do, then click Cleanup once more and repeat the process.
  • If there are problems with Internet access, Windows Update, Windows Firewall or other system issues, run the fixdamage tool located in the folder Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit was run from and reboot your computer.
  • Two files (mbar-log-YYYY-MM-DD, system-log.txt) will be created and saved within that same folder.
  • Copy and paste the contents of these two log files in your next reply.

Hey! So I just went to check here to see this. Updating Super Anti-Spy seems to have fixed the issue with my computer running super-slow, but I do see you're asking me to run an Anti-Rootkit tool; do you see something that's still wrong? Thanks.

Updating Super Anti-Spy seems to have fixed the issue with my computer running super-slow, but I do see you're asking me to run an Anti-Rootkit tool; do you see something that's still wrong? Thanks..

SAS is sort of out-dated and I hardly ever use it. I would like to see the Rootkit log to make sure your computer is clean.

I downloaded and installed it - it came up with a message that reads as follows:

"Registry value "AppInit_Dlls" has been found, which may be caused by rootkit activity."

It then asks if I want to delete the value and scan, but to press No if not sure and to press 'yes' if the scan terminates unexpectedly, and the warning comes up again. I'm going to press 'no' for now, and post the scan log when it's complete.

On the subject of SAS, it wasn't about whether I found anything - but once I actually updated the program, didn't even scan, just updated it, the slowdown stopped so that might've been the cause of the slowdown. Am still going to run MBAR because that message has me a bit worried D:

Good idea. Rootkit will really slow down the computer.

Scan said it didn't find anything, didn't seem to produce a log.

I did notice some info in the description talking aobut how if Windows Update/Windows firewall didn't work to run a tool - mine haven't worked for like, ever, since a previous infection. Should I run that? Nothing I've run has fixed it yet.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your DESKTOP.
If your version of Windows defaults to you download folder you will need to copy it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

To prevent your anti-virus application interfering with ComboFix we need to disable it. See here for a tutorial regarding how to do so if you are unsure.

  • Close any open windows and double click ComboFix.exe to run it.

You will see the following image:

100% CPU when no programs are open NSIS_disclaimer_ENG

Click I Agree to start the program.

ComboFix will then extract the necessary files and you will see this:

100% CPU when no programs are open NSIS_extraction

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. This will not occur in Windows Vista and 7

It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.

100% CPU when no programs are open RcAuto1

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

100% CPU when no programs are open Whatnext

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a report for you. Please post the contents of the log (C:\ComboFix.txt).

Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running. ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

Note: Please Do NOT mouseclick combofix's window while its running because it may cause it to stall.

COmbofix says not to run any programs while generating the log, but my normal background programs (Avast!, SAS) did start while it was doing that. I turned them off again, though, until it finished. Also, when I started Firefox, it says it wasn't my default browser, which it was before I ran Combofix.

Did you run MBAR? I need to see the log.
*********************************************
Go to Microsoft Windows Update and get all critical updates.

I did and I mentioned it didn't seem to produce a log because the scan came up clean; if it did but it just didn't pop up, where would I find it.

I just wanted to know if it came up clean. Were you able to get your Windows updates?

Prtty good. SOrry to waste your time when it wasn't malware. I think SAS was just being a pissy resource hog on my computer.

I think SAS was just being a pissy resource hog on my computer..

SAS is really only good for cleaning out tracking cookies.
SOrry to waste your time when it wasn't malware.

Not a problem.I learn something from every poster that I help.
Let's do some cleanup and we'll be done.

* Click START then RUN - Vista users press the Windows Key and the R keys together for the Run box.
* Now type Combofix /uninstall in the runbox
* Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /Uninstall
* Then hit Enter

* The above procedure will:
* Delete the following:
* ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
* Reset the clock settings.
* Hide file extensions, if required.
* Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
* Set a new, clean Restore Point.
********************************
Click Start> Computer> right click the C Drive and choose Properties> enter
Click Disk Cleanup from there.

100% CPU when no programs are open Diskcleanup2

Click OK on the Disk Cleanup Screen.
Click Yes on the Confirmation screen.

100% CPU when no programs are open Diskcleanup

This runs the Disk Cleanup utility along with other selections if you have chosen any. (if you had a lot System Restore points, you will see a significant change in the free space in C drive)
