descriptionS.M.A.R.T. Check, Drive Sector Not Found Error, Other Issues EmptyS.M.A.R.T. Check, Drive Sector Not Found Error, Other Issues

more_horiz
My issues started the other day when multiple pop-ups appeared on my computer with the following message: "A write command during the test has failed and may be due to a media or read/write error." Following the pop-ups, a screen with something called S.M.A.R.T. came up and indicated that I had seven issues with my computer and the only way to fix it was to purchase their software. It was clear that it was a scam, but it was too late to fix whatever had invaded my system. I also received "drive sector not found error" and now each time I try to do a search via search engine, I get directed to some other website rather than the one I am actually looking for.

I attempted to run the OTL, but I only received the OTL log (attached) and not the extras log. I then downloaded the "aswMBR," but it would not run. I tried to run it several times to no avail. I can only run my computer in SAFE mode at this time. When I try to run it in normal mode, everything appears to be gone from my START UP menu (no documents, no pictures, no programs, etc).

This is actually the second computer that this S.M.A.R.T. has affected in as many weeks. My other laptop only has a black screen when I turn it on and can't even get into the F8 screen, but thankfully this laptop hasn't completely died on me. If we can address this laptop first, I'd love if perhaps we can discuss possible remedies for the other laptop since it has virtually the same afflictions (although it is further gone now that I only have a black screen with it).

Here is the OTL log:

Hello and welcome to GeekPolice.Net My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer.

1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.

I did the things you asked. The UNHIDE allowed me to see my documents and other things from my START menu again, but only when I'm logged in as Adminstrator from the SAFE menu. I cannot see anything when I'm logged in as myself from regular mode. I have to be in SAFE mode and as an administrator to see everything.

The Malwarebytes did not find anything at all. I am posting the log following this message. I am still having problems. When I do a search and click on any search results, I end up on some bizarre website rather than the result that I was seeking. For example, if I searched for Expedia and Expedia came up in my Google search results, I would end up on some strange website that was nothing like Expedia if I clicked on the Expedia link. I keep getting misdirected. Also, when I tried to log back into my computer in regular mode, I noticed that S.M.A.R.T. HDD was still in my START menu. Isn't this part of what is causing me problems? I'm endlessly frustrated since I am not sure what I clicked on to start this entire problem (and as I stated in my original post, this is the second laptop this has happened to). Yes, this is known as Scareware designed to make you think that there's something seriously wrong with your computer and only by purchasing their programs will fix the problem.
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode with Networking and download the following program.

Please download and run the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run.
Save Rkill to your desktop.

Vista and Win7 users need to right click Rkill and choose Run as Administrator

You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

iExplore.exe

When at the download page, click on the Download Now button labeled iExplore.exe download link. When you are prompted where to save it, please save it on your desktop.

Once it is downloaded, double-click on the iExplore.exe icon in order to automatically attempt to stop any processes associated with Smart HDD and other Rogue programs. If you cannot find the iExplore.exe icon that you downloaded, you can also execute the program by doing the following steps based on your version of Windows:

For Windows 7 and Windows Vista, click on the Start button and then in the search field enter %userprofile%\desktop\iexplore.exe and then press the Enter key on your keyboard. If you Windows prompts you to allow it to run, please allow it to do so.

For Windows XP, click on the Start button and then click on the Run menu option. In the Open: field enter %userprofile%\desktop\iexplore.exe and press the OK button. If you Windows prompts you to allow it to run, please allow it to do so.

Please be patient while the program looks for various malware programs and ends them. When it has finished, the black window will automatically close and you can continue with the next step. If you get a message that RKill is an infection, do not be concerned. This message is just a fake warning given by Smart HDD when it terminates programs that may potentially remove it. If you run into these infections warnings that close RKill, a trick is to leave the warning on the screen and then run RKill again. By not closing the warning, this typically will allow you to bypass the malware trying to protect itself so that rkill can terminate Smart HDD . So, please try running RKill until the malware is no longer running. You will then be able to proceed with the rest of the guide. If you continue having problems running RKill, you can download the other renamed versions of RKill from the rkill download page. All of the files are renamed copies of RKill, which you can try instead. Please note that the download page will open in a new browser window or tab.

Do not reboot your computer after running RKill as the malware programs will start again.
Now try to run MBAM in Safe Mode and let me know what happens.

I tried running the tdskiller twice and it won't open and run. I followed the directions exactly as described and it would not run. I could not get to the screens as shown above. I downloaded the program in SAFE mode and in regular mode and could not get it to run either way. I could extract all the files, but when the files were extracted, there was a file with a 3KB Eula documents and a red and black "K" (the red part of the "K" was shaped like a "v" and the black part was shaped like an "arrow" making up the shape of a "K."). When I clicked on the black and red "K," nothing happens.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your DESKTOP.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

When saving ComboFix rename it to PCHelpForum.exe to prevent it from being blocked by malware.

To prevent your anti-virus application interfering with ComboFix we need to disable it. See here for a tutorial regarding how to do so if you are unsure.

  • Close any open windows and double click PCHelpForum.exe to run it.

You will see the following image:

S.M.A.R.T. Check, Drive Sector Not Found Error, Other Issues NSIS_disclaimer_ENG

Click I Agree to start the program.

ComboFix will then extract the necessary files and you will see this:

S.M.A.R.T. Check, Drive Sector Not Found Error, Other Issues NSIS_extraction

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. This will not occur in Windows Vista and 7

It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.

S.M.A.R.T. Check, Drive Sector Not Found Error, Other Issues RcAuto1

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

S.M.A.R.T. Check, Drive Sector Not Found Error, Other Issues Whatnext

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a report for you. Please post the contents of the log (C:\ComboFix.txt).

Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running. ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

Note: Please Do NOT mouseclick combofix's window while its running because it may cause it to stall.

I followed the directions after downloading the first link. I've tried doing the process several times, but it keeps freezing while the scan is happening. It reaches the blue screen where it says that it is scanning for infected files and that the process takes up to ten minutes, but for badly infected computers, it can take double the time. After about twenty minutes, I notice that the screen is frozen...nothing is happening. I'm going to keep trying until I hear from you again. Thanks so much for your help!!

I would like you to try running TDSSKiller a number of times. With this type of infection, it should run eventually. The same goes for TDSSKiller. The infection gives a warning when you try to open programs in order to convince you that something is seriously wrong with the computer.
I would like you to try running HJT. There is a couple of lines I'm searching for.
Your initial OTL log shows that you had ComboFix on your computer. Did you ever run a scan with it? If you did, there should be a log in the ComboFix folder on your C drive. If found, please attach it.
Did you delete any temp files since this started?

I am not sure what I did when this initially happened. SMART HDD did pop up on my screen telling me that I had a bunch of critical errors. I do not think that exact screen popped up, but something very similar (and it very well may could have been the same). I do not think I deleted any temporary files, but at this point, I have no idea what I'm doing. I don't see a ComboFix log on my computer, but I'll keep snooping around. I'm going to keep trying the TDSSKiller as well. Thanks.

Ok. There it is; a bad MBR. We'll try to repair it. If you can't install the Recovery Console you won't be able to run the second one. If successful installing the RC proceed with the second and then post another scan with MBRCheck.

Please download this file from Microsoft and save it on your desktop.
WindowsXP-KB310994-SP2-Home-BootDisk-ENU

Next, please drop/drop it onto Combofix, and Combofix will install the recovery console.

S.M.A.R.T. Check, Drive Sector Not Found Error, Other Issues Rc

Once that is done, Combofix will ask if you want to continue to scan. Select no, and then let me know once you have gotten this far.

*****************************************************
Earlier on ComboFix installed the Recovery Console. We're going to use that now.

Reboot your machine and when the Boot Menu flashes up - select "Microsoft Windows Recovery Console"
(you need to be very fast with the arrow key as you only have a couple of seconds before it defaults to the windows XP bootup)

S.M.A.R.T. Check, Drive Sector Not Found Error, Other Issues RC_BootMenu

S.M.A.R.T. Check, Drive Sector Not Found Error, Other Issues RConsole_A

When you get to the above screen, take note of the number that references your operating system.

If it's '1' like the picture above, type 1 and press Enter

S.M.A.R.T. Check, Drive Sector Not Found Error, Other Issues RConsole_Fixmbr

Next type FIXMBR

If it ask if you're sure you want to write a new MBR, answer 'Y'

Then type EXIT to reboot the machine.

With that done, please post back and let me know how things are now.

I downloaded the file from Microsoft and dropped it on the ComboFix, but it seems like I'm doing something wrong. ComboFix goes to the blue screen and wants to do the scan and I'm not sure how to get out of it. I was never successful with ComboFix to begin with as it kept freezing before, so it's a problem. I tried to do the second step because I do have the option for the Windows Recovery Console, but all that happens is my computer says it is starting the Window Recovery Console, but it just stays at the same screen doing nothing...very confused.

I'm still having the same problem. I've been trying to follow your last direction, but I get the same result i posted last night. Is this a lost cause?

Let's give this a try.

Fix using MBRCheck.exe

Run MBRCheck.exe again by double-clicking on it.

  • Wait until you see the following line: Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
  • Enter 'Y' and then press Enter.
  • When asked: 'Enter your choice:', select option 2 (Restore the MBR of a physical disk with a standard boot code) and press the Enter key.
  • Now the program will ask: 'Enter the physical disk number to fix (0-99, -1 to cancel)'
  • Enter 0 and press the Enter key.
  • The program will show Available MBR codes followed by a list of operating systems as shown below:

Code:

Available MBR codes:
[ 0] Default (Windows XP)
[ 1] Windows XP
[ 2] Windows Server 2003
[ 3] Windows Vista
[ 4] Windows 2008
[ 5] Windows 7
[-1] Cancel
Please select the MBR code to write to this drive:

  • Please select your version of Windows from the list and enter the corresponding number and then press Enter.
  • When prompted for confirmation: "Do you want to fix the MBR code?". Type the full word Yes (not Y or the fix will not work) and press Enter.
  • Left-click on the title bar (where program name and path is written).
  • From the menu chose Edit -> Select All.
  • Press the Enter key to copy selected text.
  • Open Notepad, paste that text into it and save to your desktop as MBRCheck.txt.
  • When complete, you should see Done! Press ENTER to exit.... Press Enter on the keyboard.
  • Reboot your computer to complete the fix and copy/paste MBRCheck.txt in your next reply.
  • If your computer does not restart on its own, please restart it manually.

You should already have MBRCheck on your computer. Just double-click on it to run.
BTW, do you have your OS disk?

Am I cured? If so, you are a saint for putting up with me and a genius for getting this computer up and running again.

Well, things are looking much better. I couple more scans just to make sure we got everything.

Download Security Check by screen317 from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2

* Double-click Security Check.bat
* Follow the on-screen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt
* Post the contents of that document in your next reply.

Note: If a security program requests permission from dig.exe to access the Internet, allow it to do so.

Update Your Java (JRE)

Old versions of Java have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

First Verify your Java Version

If there are any other version(s) installed then update now.

Get the new version (if needed)

If your version is out of date install the newest version of the Sun Java Runtime Environment.

Note: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.

Be sure to close ALL open web browsers before starting the installation.

Remove any old versions

1. Download JavaRa and unzip the file to your Desktop.
2. Open JavaRA.exe and choose Remove Older Versions
3. Once complete exit JavaRA.

Additional Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and reboot your computer.
**********************************************************
Looking over your log it seems you don't have any antivirus software.

Before we continue download and install a free antivirus.

Remember to only install one antivirus!

1) Avast! Home Edition
2) AVG Free Edition
3) Avira AntiVir Personal
4) Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows Vista\Windows 7 - 64 bit Download
4-a) Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows XP
5) Comodo Antivirus (Uncheck during installation "Install Comodo SafeSurf..", Make Comodo my default search provider" and "Make Comodo Search my homepage" if you choose this one)
6) PC Tools AntiVirus Free Edition
7) ThreatFire

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts. If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.
