descriptionSystem Running Slow & Black Hole Threats? EmptySystem Running Slow & Black Hole Threats?

more_horiz
Hi, this is my first time here. Not sure to what to make of this one, it's got me extremely ticked off, I've never come across it and don't know where else to turn. Yesterday my computer started beeping for no reason. Couldn't figure out what it was, but I didn't pay it no mind, sometimes I get a stuck key on my keyboard every so often, and it happens. But then the beeping began to persist and get very annoying. Couldn't figure out what was causing it, so I just turned the sound off and paid it no mind. But then last night is when I started to notice the problem. My machine was running very slow. It would take forever for something to open up, even a web page. I've rebooted several times, and each time AVG has picked up and blocked a black hole threat. I'm glad it's blocking them, but every time I reboot AVG kept picking them up. So I decided to run a full virus scan. It didn't pick up anything. I got ticked off at it last night and decided to shut everything down and try running a defrag, which usually cures slowness in my case. But when I woke up this morning and rebooted the system again, AVG picked up and blocked another black hole threat. I decided to install and run Spyware Terminator. Took a couple of hours to scan, and in that time, it only picked up 2 problems and fixed them. Thinking that would work, I rebooted and began to start up all my programs again as normal. The slowness thing kept on persisting. At this point I decided to get rid of Spyware Terminator and try something that has never failed me in the past. XoftSpySE v6.0. I ran a full scan with that, and it picked up 3 bad cookies and an adware. I figured this would fix the problem. NOPE! When I rebooted, AVG picked up and blocked yet ANOTHER black hole threat. Then. I gave up for a while and decided to move on to other things and let it sit for a while. Figured maybe it would work itself out. Came back to it just a little bit ago to see what was going on, because it started beeping again. I can NOT figure this out. The only way my computer works smoothly now, is by running it in the Administrator account, but access is limited to how much I can do, because not everything I run will work in SAFEMODE, and in Windows XP Home Edition, the only way you can log into the Administrator account is to go into SAFEMODE. I had to run my computer in SAFEMODE With Networking in order to get here and tell you about my problem. It's been quite annoying. Please help.

The Security Checker thing didn't do anything, probably because I'm in Safe Mode, so nothing is running.

My log files are attached as file attachments because it put the message characters into -21981

Thanks,
Sean

Hello and welcome to GeekPolice.Net My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer.

1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

To prevent your anti-virus application interfering with ComboFix we need to disable it. See here[/URL] for a tutorial regarding how to do so if you are unsure.

  • Close any open windows and double click ComboFix.exe to run it.

You will see the following image:

System Running Slow & Black Hole Threats? NSIS_disclaimer_ENG

Click I Agree to start the program.

ComboFix will then extract the necessary files and you will see this:

System Running Slow & Black Hole Threats? NSIS_extraction

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. This will not occur in Windows Vista and 7

It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.

System Running Slow & Black Hole Threats? RcAuto1

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

System Running Slow & Black Hole Threats? Whatnext

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a report for you. Please post the contents of the log (C:\ComboFix.txt).

Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running. ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

Note: Please Do NOT mouseclick combofix's window while its running because it may cause it to stall.

This took a pretty long time. The computer found a Rootkit in TCP/IP stack during the first run, had to reboot and continue from there. Then after that, it kept popping up dialogue boxes saying that a lot of .TMP files were corrupted and I needed to run chkdsk to recover them. I didn't think it was necessary to do so since I always delete .TMP files every so often anyway, because they're temporary files and don't mean anything to the things I run on my machine anyway. During that scanning process, the last I checked it was up to stage 50, it probably had more, but I went out for a smoke while it dd it's thing and when I came back, the computer was in the reboot process again. Then, it finally prepared the log report, telling me not to run any program suntil CComboFix has finished. While that was going, I got a popup on my task bar saying "PEV.exe - Corrupt File - The file or directory CC:\WINDOWS|Temp\g36ukm2r.TMP is corrupt and unreadable. Please run Chkdsk utility." No clue what all that meant, but again, it was a TMP file, so I didn't think it was necessary to do anything with that. Log report is still preparing at this point, will post it when it's finished. Just wanted to catch you up on what's been going on at this point.

Update Your Java (JRE)

Old versions of Java have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

First Verify your Java Version

If there are any other version(s) installed then update now.

Get the new version (if needed)

If your version is out of date install the newest version of the Sun Java Runtime Environment.

Note: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.

Be sure to close ALL open web browsers before starting the installation.

Remove any old versions

1. Download JavaRa and unzip the file to your Desktop.
2. Open JavaRA.exe and choose Remove Older Versions
3. Once complete exit JavaRA.

Additional Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and reboot your computer.

Guys, this is taking too long. I don't mean to be impatient or anything, but good lord, this is a lot of stuff to have to go through just to get rid of a bunch of virus and malware and spyware. I need my computer. I realy appreciate everyone's hard work on here, but I think I'm just going to reformat the machine. It's a lot easier, and a lot less time consuming. I have no idea how to close this topc, I'm assuming the person handling it can. Thank you very much for your time.

but good lord, this is a lot of stuff to have to go through just to get rid of a bunch of virus and malware and spyware. I need my computer. I really appreciate everyone's hard work on here, but I think I'm just going to reformat the machine. It's a lot easier, and a lot less time consuming.

It really depends on how much a machine is infected and some infection leaves the computer is such bad shape that re-format is the only recourse. Of course a re-format is the way to go but you must realize that not everyone has that option. Good luck.
