My laptop will not boot properly. I continue to get critical errors and I can not see any programs. I also get errors that state the sata drive is damaged. It was working fine last night but suddenly this morning there are multiple issues. Also can not reach internet unless we are in safe mode and can not download Malawarebytes stating access denied.

Here are the OTL logs:

Still won't let me install Malawarebytes. It continues to say Acess Denied. Also tried to run it in Safe Mode and it won't run that way either.

That looks good.

You need to install the latest version of Java. Having the latest version is important to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel
  • Double-click on Add or Remove Programs
  • Look for entries that say Java, Java RunTime Environment or J2SE.
  • Uninstall all of them that are not named Java (TM) 6 Update 25

After doing this, you can go to java.com, click on Free Java Download and proceed from there to install the latest version of Java (currently Version 6 Update 25).

After installing Java, go to Start > Control Panel > Java to open the Java Control Panel.
Under the General tab, Temporary Internet Files click Settings, then click Delete Files.
Select both options and click OK to delete the Java cache.

====================

How are things running now?

Avira found traces of Alureon, which is a nasty infection.
However, the aswMBR scan did not show it. So either you did not get infected or it is some new variant that escapes aswMBR.

Normally Alureon is an infection you notice quickly by e.g. its google redirects. So if you see that happening - you will need to raise the alarm again.

Still having some issues. The screen is still black. MicrosoftWord is listed as a program and calculator and malawarebytes and revo uninstaller but all other is gone. All documents, all pictures say (empty). Avira also found:
contained a virus or unwanted program 'TR/Kazy.25792.7' [trojan]
AND
contained a virus or unwanted program 'TR/FakeSysdef.A.1278' [trojan
soooo what next?

Try this to get back stuff that has disappeared:

  • Please download Unhide by Grinler from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click unhide.exe to run the tool.
  • It will take some time to go through all your files, so please be patient.
  • If this tool doesn´t fix the problem, please let me know.

====================

We´re going to run a scan with ESET Online Scanner. Please make sure you are logged in as a user with administrator rights and proceed with the following steps:
  • Use Internet Explorer to browse to the ESET Online Scanner webpage
  • Click the green ESET Online Scanner button
  • A popup window will open
  • Accept the terms of use and click Start
  • Internet Explorer probably informs you that ESET tries to install an add-on. Allow that.
  • UNSELECT the Remove all threats option.
  • Click Start
  • When the scan has finished and threats were found, click List of found threats
  • Click Export to text file and save it as e.g. eset.txt on your desktop
  • Click Back
  • Select Uninstall application on close
  • Click Finish. ESET Online Scanner will now uninstall itself
  • Please post the contents of the eset.txt in your next reply.

Yes the unhide program helped however I think that I am going to disable the antivirus and run it once more.
Here is the eset results:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Search Toolbar\SearchToolbar.dll Win32/Toolbar.Zugo application
C:\Users\pits\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Low\Content.IE5\2XYEI3TL\console=yes[1].htm JS/Kryptik.Q trojan
C:\Users\pits\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Low\Content.IE5\2XYEI3TL\mktj[1].htm JS/Kryptik.Q trojan
C:\Users\pits\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Low\Content.IE5\A614ACEI\console=yes[1].htm JS/Kryptik.Q trojan
C:\Users\pits\Desktop\softonic-us-silent.exe Win32/Toolbar.Zugo application
C:\Users\pits\Downloads\speedingupmy-pc.exe a variant of Win32/Adware.SpeedingUpMyPC application

descriptionLaptop virus...please help! EmptyRe: Laptop virus...please help!

more_horiz
So some of the programs you have installed are classified as adware, the Search Toolbar and speedupmypc thingy. Maybe you should consider to uninstall them.

Some traces of malware left in your temporary files, so lets run a cleaner.

  • Please download TFC (Temp File Cleaner) by OldTimer from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Close all programs before proceeding with the next step.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to start the cleaning process and allow it to run
  • Depending on the amount of files that needs to be deleted this can take seconds or up to several minutes.
  • If requested, allow TFC to reboot your computer to finish the cleaning process.

====================

Any problems left? If not all programs have returned with unhide, you´re going to have to do that manually (creating shortcuts in the programs folder or uninstall/installing the application).

descriptionLaptop virus...please help! EmptyRe: Laptop virus...please help!

Well it appears to be ok. It still says there are a some files missing upon reboot but we can re-install the the software for what is missing. I am running avira antivirus now to see if everything is gone. Is there any thing else we need to do?

descriptionLaptop virus...please help! EmptyRe: Laptop virus...please help!

more_horiz
Avira did not find anymore viruses. The only warnings it gave were:
C:\hiberfil.sys
[WARNING] The file could not be opened!
[NOTE] This file is a Windows system file.
[NOTE] This file cannot be opened for scanning.
C:\pagefile.sys
[WARNING] The file could not be opened!
[NOTE] This file is a Windows system file.
[NOTE] This file cannot be opened for scanning.

Other than that and a few icons not where they should be it seems to be ok.

====================

Time to uninstall used tools.
  • Double click OTL.exe to run it again and click the CleanUp button.
  • If we used any other tools and they still remain on your desktop, please delete them manually.

====================

Select both options and click OK to delete the Java cache.

====================

Allright! Now that we have you cleaned, we´ve got to make sure you stay clean.
Let me provide you with some recommendations:

1) Keep your Windows up-to-date. Windows Autoupdate should be ON (see Start >> Control Panel >> Security Center). An alternative way (but more time-consuming) is to periodically visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. Hackers are looking every day for new security holes. Microsoft keeps patching them. You cannot fall behind in this race, it will make your system vulnerable.

2) For your average daily computer activities, use a limited/standard user account. If you use Vista/WIN7 do not disable User Account Control (UAC). You would be amazed to know how much malware can´t touch you if you deny it admin rights. Create a separate password-protected administrator account that you use for admin activities, like (un)installing software.

3) Use a good antivirus. There are various free ones, you cannot go wrong with either of the following three:
  • Panda Cloud Antivirus. If you want your antivirus to be light on resources, I recommend Panda. Install without the toolbar.
  • Avira. 100 million users can´t be wrong. If you want high detection rates, this is your best free bet.
  • Avast! is a very complete antivirus, with modules like mailscanner and webshield.

4) If your computer has 1GB system memory or more, you should install a third party firewall, to replace the weak Windows Firewall. I recommend:

Note: you should run only ONE antivirus and ONE firewall. Running multiples of either is bad, it will cause slowdowns and/or conflicts.

5) Miscellaneous advice:
  • Stay away from cracks and keygens (look here for the why). Get free software instead. Gizmo is an excellent source of freeware reviews.
  • Navigate safely. Google Chrome is the safest browser available. However, Mozilla Firefox can be made extremely safe with the NoScript addon. Internet Explorer (always use version 8) can be made a lot safer with Spywareblaster (manual here).
  • The WOT (Webs Of Trust) addon will help you to stay on reliable webpages.
  • WinPatrol alerts you when changes are made in vital system areas. Especially good on light systems not running a third party firewall.
  • Make sure you have ways to recuperate your operating system and vital other data if its gets frustrated by malware and/or other problems. A Windows setup CD and recent backups/disk images will be priceless, if you find yourself in an unexpected tight spot.

Finally: did we help you? Help us back!

One last thing.... Do you reccommend we do a system restore to restore some of the lost icons?
Thanks so very much for all your help!!!Thank You! Been excellent to work with you!!! Hooray!

descriptionLaptop virus...please help! EmptyRe: Laptop virus...please help!

more_horiz
A system restore is not a bad idea.

Also you can manually restore the folders and shortcuts missing - I don´t know where exactly those folders are in Vista, but somewhere in your user folder should be the programs folder with the hierarchy of folders and program shortcuts of your start menu.

Another option is to re-install programs whose shortcuts are missing in the menu.

Good luck!

Hello,we are continuing to have a few issues with our laptop. First of all we get the following error:
Windows cannot find 'C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start
Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools\Computer Manaement.Ink'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.

We are also unable to do a system restore. We get an error that System Restore did not complete successfully. It says to disable the antivirus but even after doing that it still will not complete the process and states an unspecified error occurred during System Restore.

Any ideas????

descriptionLaptop virus...please help! EmptyRe: Laptop virus...please help!

more_horiz
If you cannot do a system restore - don´t worry. Your computer is clean of malware. You will have to restore missing icons etc the hard way

When exactly does this error show? On startup of the computer?
