Started as a disabling of realtime scan, uninstalled & reinstalled Mcafee to get it scanning again, Mcafee didn't find anything, and now can't successfully log into Mcafee site... get 'locked out' because too many tries alert... go through process to reset password and appears to work, but still can't log in via my home PCs (Can login via other PC / Mac away from my home's wireless net). Tries Mcafee 'Stinger' program and Spybot... Spybot found some things but problem still not resolved. Uninstalled Mcafee and installed Kaspersky... it found a LOT of stuff (trojans mostly, disconcerting in their numbers and names... Mcafee apears to suck at finding trojans)... fixed what was found but still have the same login block problem. Now experimenting on my old desktop (Windows XP), but initial problem discovery was on my laptop (Vista Home Prem). Tried GeekPolice ComboFix, etc... no help. I had a similar issue sometime a year or so back, fixed easily via something I found on web including a minor regedit and something else, don't recall exactly what that entailed. Ideas???

Hello.

  • Download combofix from here
    Link 1

    1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

    * Tools->Options->Main tab
    * Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

    2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

Mcafee login password apparently being scrambled, preventing user login. CF_download_FF

Mcafee login password apparently being scrambled, preventing user login. CF_download_rename

    3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
    4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
    5. Close any open browsers.
    6. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.
  • See HERE for how to disable your AV.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

Mcafee login password apparently being scrambled, preventing user login. Cf410

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will then get this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

Mcafee login password apparently being scrambled, preventing user login. Cf510

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Hello.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs.

    Adobe Reader 8.1.2
    Java(TM) 6 Update 3
    Java(TM) 6 Update 5

Then download and install Adobe Reader X

How is the machine running now?

Machine appears to be running fine, but I still have the same Mcafee website login problem. I have noticed that I get the 'exceeded number of allowed attempts" and "view instructions to unlock" link only when I enter the correct password. If I enter the wrong password, I get the normal error message from Mcafee. I also noticed (again) that whatever is causing this also tries to append the characters 'Junk2' to the beginning of my email address on the login prompt.

Correction... when the Mcafee login page first loads, it shows my normal email address as my login name (I have 'remember me' checked), then within about 1/2 second, "Junk_2_" is added to the front of my email address login id. I also notice that if I take a fresh path to the login page, like going to home.Mcafee.com, and then hitting the login link, the Junk_2_' is appended right away. Ring any bells out there?

What browser are you using to login with?

Also, do the follow and try again, lets clear the cache and temp files.

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.
Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

Thanks, but get back to me when you have a suggestion as to what the virus is or a tool that might actually expose it.

Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari all give same result.

You may need to clear the cache's manually, give that a try and see what happens.

Problem found and fixed. Looks like Kaspersky or possibly AVG found and eradicated the virus / trojan, but completely un-installing and reinstalling Internet Explorer and Firefox was required to get whatever residual data or settings remained out of those programs. Just clearing their cache and history didn't do it. Mcafee clearly sucks both as a virus cleaning tool and as a protection tool, at least as far as trojans go. Kaspersky found lots of trojans after Mcafee said all was clear. AVG looks like a great tool in terms of providing alerts whenever any software within the computer attempts to make contact out to the web (critical in avoiding trojans that want to capture your passwords and pass them back to whoever sent the trojan). Given that, Mcafee is history, but now I need to decide on either Kaspersky or AVG going forward. The two do seem to run together fine, but that's probably overkill from a cost perspective.

Kaspersky I would highly recommend anyday over AVG, and please don't run both at once, it can result in more false positives than protection.
