I see where someone else on the forum has this same virus. My laptop running XP takes approximately 20 minutes to fully boot up and I get a malware notice from Avira each time. Firefox is almost impossible to open and once it does, it freezes frequently. I update and run Malwarebytes on a regular basis as well as SUPERAntispyware but nothing appears in either scan. Avira scans do not detect problems upon full scans, only on initial boot. Prior to this evening, I could eventually open a browser but I can't get to that point now with either Firefox or IE to be able to download OTL and run a scan. The computer is in a constant loop of booting and rebooting.

Please advise and thanks for your help!

I was finally able to open a Chrome browser and download OTL. The results are in the attached .txt files. Also, my Java is up to date as well as Microsoft updates and Adobe.

Hello.

  • Download combofix from here
    Link 1
    Link 2

    1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

    * Tools->Options->Main tab
    * Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

    2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

Avira detected tr/crypt.zpack.gen in skype program files CF_download_FF

Avira detected tr/crypt.zpack.gen in skype program files CF_download_rename

    3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
    4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
    5. Close any open browsers.
    6. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.
  • See HERE for how to disable your AV.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

Avira detected tr/crypt.zpack.gen in skype program files Cf410

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will then get this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

Avira detected tr/crypt.zpack.gen in skype program files Cf510

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

I downloaded and ran ComboFix - saved it as Combo-Fix. It ran but at the very end I got a flash of a blue screen and all I could see was "serious error" or some such language and the computer shut down. I ran ComboFix again with a download from the second link and it happened again.

I can't find the text file.

What now??

Just ran it again with a fresh ComboFix download - same blue error screen with "encountered an error" but I couldn't determine any other message. I followed instructions to the letter.

Hello.

Please download TDSSKiller from here and save it to your Desktop.

  • Click the Start Scan button
  • After the scan has finished, click the Close button
  • Click the Report button and copy/paste the contents of it into your next reply
Note:It will also create a log in the C:\ directory.

Download MBRCheck to your desktop.

  • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (Vista and Windows 7 users, right click and select Run as Administrator).
  • It will show a black screen with some data on it.

Based on my novice interpretation of the above log, I uninstalled ESET, downloaded a new version, and ran the scan again. It gets to approximately 47% scanned and my computer then shuts down. A similar log was created.

The computer is again in a constant loop of booting and re-booting with the last reboot defaulting to safe mode.

One other piece of info - the only way I was able to proceed with the download was to click the "Enable Stealth Technology" option; otherwise, I would receive an error message.

Hello.

Download Security Check by screen317 and save it to your Desktop.

  • Unzip SecurityCheck.zip and a folder named Security Check should appear.
  • Open the Security Check folder and double-click Security Check.bat
  • Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
Note: if a security program requests permission from dig.exe to access the Internet, allow it to do so.

I really don't see any improvement in performance and Avira still picks up the malware whenever I boot up. It blocks it and then runs a scan but it definitely slows the start-up process. The computer is still freezing up on occasion and it shut down last night before the nightly scan was completed.

Did you update Avira? just to check this ins't a false positive, as I have Skype installed on my machines along with Avira and it doesn't detect it.

Yes, it's updated. I had actually done a Google search on the event report before posting here for help. I found some sites that indicated a false positive for Avira but given that the computer was acting whacky with freezing and shutting down, I figured that it was a legit malware issue. There were also other posts I found on getting rid of it but I wasn't that confident on their level of expertise. I've learned in the past to trust the moderators on GP so I figured if anyone could solve it, you guys could.
