Recently, I was able to go online, but I'd get a "generic host process for win32 has encountered a problem and needs to close" notice. Then, my firefox windows would close and be replaced by a scary virus alert, and soon after the graphics on the screen would switch to a style I associate with safe mode, and the whole system would freeze. Today however, after running the OTL scan, I'm not getting those symptoms -- but I'm only able to use firefox for less than minute, before it's unable to find the server. It does seem that the connection is strong -- but when I click the green bars to see the signal/noise history, it's all green - the red side has no activity. To send the OTL log, I had to put it on a flash disc and now I'm using my wife's computer. I can't update Java bc I get kicked offline before the whole program can download.

One more thing which may be helpful -- the other day malwarebytes and microsoft security essentials found and removed about 20 "severe threats". Here are the results of those scans. Since then I've rerun both scans and they haven't found anything, although there's obviously still a major problem.

Hello.

  • Download combofix from here
    Link 1
    Link 2

    1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

    * Tools->Options->Main tab
    * Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

    2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

Not sure what viruses I have, but they seem to be nasty CF_download_FF

Not sure what viruses I have, but they seem to be nasty CF_download_rename

    3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
    4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
    5. Close any open browsers.
    6. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.
  • See HERE for how to disable your AV.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

Not sure what viruses I have, but they seem to be nasty Cf410

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will then get this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

Not sure what viruses I have, but they seem to be nasty Cf510

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

I let combofix run overnight - and in the morning, it still hadn't produced a result. Figuring it may have stalled, I restarted the computer, ran it again for the last 3hrs and it still has the blue box which says: "Scanning for infected files...this typically doesn't take more than 10 minutes, however, scan times for badly infected machines may easily double." There's also a little blinking cursor below that text.

I have disabled MSE; do I also need to disable malwarebytes? I'm just going to leave it scanning until I hear back from you.

No.
If Combofix hangs, close it and try running it again.

On the fourth try, something different happened. The computer beeped twice loudly, and a message said that "combofix has detected the presence of rootkit activity and needs to reboot the machine". I clicked ok. I then got a catchme.cfxxee - DLL initialization failed. "the application failed to initialize because the window station is shutting down". I clicked ok. At which point I was left with just the screen backround with no icons. Then nothing happened. I turned the unit off, then on. When it came back on, the combofix window was open and commenced to run its scan. And then it hung again. Out of morbid curiosity I shut the computer down manually and restarted it -- and now I only have the background image - with no icons, no windows action at all. I let it sit for a while - then turned it on again, and it seems to have started normally. Tried running combofix one more time and it hung.

Hmm.

Try running Combofix in Safe Mode please.

I ran it twice in safe mode and it hung both times. I let it scan for about an hour each time with no results.

Okay I think we can clear the rest of this up without Combofix.

Download MBRCheck to your desktop.

  • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (Vista and Windows 7 users, right click and select Run as Administrator).
  • It will show a black screen with some data on it.
  • A report called MBRcheckxxxx.txt will be on your desktop
  • Open this report and post its content in your next reply.

Hi - for some reason, IE won't run. I noticed this a while back. I tried clicking it, clicking "open", and "run as" -- no activity. Should I perhaps uninstall and then re-install Explorer from Firefox, or run that scan from firefox? I assume I have to go to the ESET Online Scanner website?

Yes please, give that a try.

I ran the eset scanner through firefox. Here's the log. Since it removed those sick files, the computer started up faster -- still getting ad popups though.

☞Cracks/Keygens☜

Your log reveals you have cracks/keygens on your computer.

I have been questioned many times on why these things are bad. I will tell you that they are one of the top distributors of malware, and are rarely safe.

Most popular cracks or keygens I see, are for Adobe CS3/CS4/CS5, a lot of different games, Nero, Kaspersky antivirus, and much more. All of these cracks and keygens have what is called "cloaked malware." Most hacks for games that come in the form of a program or installer, will also be infected. It is the opportunity for attackers to present a seemingly safe situation where the opportunity to steal something is in play, while the malware infects your system in the process. Yes, it will install what you were looking for, but also allow malware to potentially take control of your computer.

We need to remove all of the cracks/keygens (if any) from your computer before continuing.

Please download CKScanner by askey127 from here

Save it to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick CKScanner.exe and click Search For Files.
  • After a very short time, when the cursor hourglass disappears, click Save List To File.
  • A message box will verify that the file is saved.
  • Double-click the CKFiles.txt icon on your desktop and copy/paste the contents in your next reply.

It spazzes out when I'm in firefox - with scary pop-up warnings about my registry cleaner and click here to fix the problem....also Windows gives me a "generic host process for win32 systems error".There's also some weirdness around my server connection---the signal and noise history graph on the network status page of the Dell WLAN Card Utility page that seems to manage my connection shows all green and Firefox suddenly can't find the server. Overall screen graphics also at times look muted - almost like safe mode. Based on all this, do you think it is safe for me to hook up my external hard drive and run itunes? Or is it wisest to wait until we've fixed these bugs?

The HDD/iTunes should be fine.

We advice against the use of registry cleaners, they are dangerous, see here:
http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=61015

Please download RenewMyDNS, DNS enumeration tool.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Right-click on the file and select Extract All...
  • Choose a location to save extracted files and keep pressing Next until Finish.
  • Double-click RenewMyDNS folder, then double-click RenewMyDNS.bat to start the program.
  • Follow the prompts, and when finished it will launch a log.
  • Post that log in your next reply.
  • After posting the log, delete the folder RenewMyDNS.

Update -- Got a message that said that the adobe flash plugin has crashed. Also, something strange continues with my browser -- I get redirected to all sorts of weird search sites. The generic host error notices persist, as do the registry cleaner ad/alerts. Here's that log:

It lists both of those as IPv4 DNS Servers. I'm reading that off of my wife's computer, which isn't having the problems I'm experiencing with my Dell. Maybe I';m looking in the wrong place, but I can't find those #s on my computer -- only the Gateway IP address 192.168.1.1 and the Client IP - same ending in .6 ???

Roger that The 209.* IP address is owned by a Mexican ISP, TaosNet LLC. The other is by Verizon services.

That's okay -- Taosnet is our local internet provider here in NM, and Verizon is Verizon, right? So why all these pop-ups? Are those normally blocked by a firewall or something? Also the "generic host process for win32" error keeps coming from windows....

Hi - I ran the scan. When it finished it said that it had found one infection on the hard drive; I clicked the continue button, and it said that it would be cured when I next rebooted, and did I want to reboot now? I said I did. Here is the report:

Belahzur - you're a genius. Seems to be running like a top. Do you think we're in the clear, or is there anything else we should do? Thank, R

Nope, everything looks good now.

We need to make a new restore point.

To turn off System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (or the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box), and then click OK.
4. Click Yes when you receive the prompt to the turn off System Restore.

Now we need to make a new restore point.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
I also recommand the following add-ons for Firefox, they will help keep you safe from malicious scripts or activeX exploits.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/433

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

To help you keep your software updated, please considering using this free software program that will check for program updates.
Update Checker

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or
Outpost
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

If you would take a moment to fill out our feedback form, we would appreciate it.
The link can be found here.

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. Big Grin
