I am building a new computer with a clean hard drive. I would like to install Ubuntu on it. I have never installed an OS without a disc before. My question is -

Can I go onto the internet without an operating system on a clean hdd so I can download Ubuntu?

Sorry, it's not hard to install Ubuntu, but it's not that easy. You have to have some OS in order to browse the internet. In your situation you kind of have no way to do that.

I would say, check in your area and see if there is a Linux Users Group (LUG). They will be more than happy to give you a boot CD with Linux on it. Most likely they can give you one with Ubuntu on the CD and you can install from there.

If you know anyone with a PC and a good net connection you could ask to download Ubuntu, burn it to a CD and you'd be all set.

Hope that helps!

Bill

Thanks. I have a computer to browse and download with. This is just another project I'm working on for a family member. I'll try to burn a disc then see if I can get one from LUG if that fails.

When you download Ubuntu, it will be an ISO file. You'll need a software package that unpacks ISO images on to a CD. There's a mess of them available, and you'll only need it for this one time, so I'd say get one that has a trial version.

Once you have Ubuntu installed, you can make more copies of the CD, if you like, and Ubuntu will unpack and burn CD images with the software that comes on it by default.

I hope you have a positive experience with it. I highly recommend you look at ubuntuforums.org for any questions you or the person using this system has.

You don't have to download Ubuntu, simply visit their website and request a free disc that will be mailed right to your door free of charge.

It might take a few weeks for delivery but it's worth while.

It's pretty easy. If you need steps you have just to Google Smile...

You can also have two OS's on same computer.

If you are in search of a Windows® compatible program to burn the Ubuntu ISO file to disc, I will confidently recommend ImgBurn. The ISO file is what is known as a disc image - basically an exact reproduction of the data on the original (source) disc. Hence this program's name. It burns these images to disc, among other related tasks.
