wireless is lower

i got a new cable modem that i hardwired to my laptop to activate. when i activated it i ran a speed test and got a 18mps download speed. after i connected my wireless router and ran the same speed test it drop to only 6mps. is there a way to increase this? Also my old roomate setup the wireless network so i do not have access to the password for my router settings. any help helping me resolve theses issues would be greatly appreciated. thanks
