Running Windows XP SP2 and IE6.

Browser seems to be hijacked and redirects to Shopica and other similar sites. Seems to be some sort of a Google hijack. Earlier today, I ran MBAM in Safe Mode and found a few issues that I allowed it to fix. I then ran MBAM again in Normal Mode and it found one additional issue that I allowed it to fix. I ran AVG 9 after this and it found a few items that it fixed. Further scans looked like the system was clean, however when I get online and search within Google, it seems that I am redirected when I click on a result. Not sure what to do next, so I ran MBAM and HJT a few minutes ago. The most recent MBAM and HJT Logs are posted below. I can also post the earlier ones if they are needed.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hello, and welcome to GeekPolice.

Please note the following information about the malware forum:
  • Only Tech Officers, Global Moderators, Administrators, and Malware Advisors are allowed to give advice on removing malware from your computer.
  • From this point on, please do not make any more changes to your computer; such as install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc. - unless advised by the staff I noted above.
  • Please do not ask for help elsewhere (in this site or other sites). Doing so can result in system changes, which may not show up in the logs you post.
  • If you have already asked for help somewhere, please post the link to the topic you were helped.
  • We try our best to reply quickly, but for any reason we do not reply in two days, do one of two things:

Reply to this topic with the word BUMP, or
    see this topic.

  • Lastly, keep in mind that we are volunteers, so you do not have to pay for malware removal. Persist in this topic until its close, and your computer is declared clean.

Please download 7-Zip and install it. If you already have it, no need to reinstall.

Then, download RootkitUnhooker and save the setup to your Desktop.

  • Right-click on the RootkitUnhooker setup and mouse-over 7-Zip then click Extract to "RKU***"
  • Once that is done, enter the folder, and double-click on the setup file. Navigate through setup and finish.
  • Once that is done, you will see another folder that was created inside the RKU folder. Enter that folder, and double-click on the randomly named file. (It will be alpha-numeric and have an EXE extension on it.)
  • It will initialize itself and load the scanner. It will also install its driver. Please wait for the interface to begin.
  • Once inside the interface, do not fix anything. Click on the Report tab.
  • Next, click on the Scan button and a popup will show. Make sure all are checked, then click on OK. It will begin scanning. When it gets to the Files tab, it will ask you what drives to scan. Just select C:\ and hit OK.
  • It will finish in about 5 minutes or a little longer depending on how badly infected the system is, or if your security software is enabled.
  • When finished, it will show the report in the Report tab. Please copy all of it, and post it in your next reply. Depending on how large the log is, you may have to use two or three posts to get all the information in.

Please download ComboFix Browser redirects to Shopica and various sites (Hijacked ?) Combofix from BleepingComputer.com

Alternate link: GeeksToGo.com

Alternate link: Forospyware.com (Click the green button on the page to download it).

Rename ComboFix.exe to combo-fix.exe before you save it to your Desktop
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:
    killall::

    TDL::
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\cdrom.sys
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\atapi.sys

    Reboot::
  • Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Browser redirects to Shopica and various sites (Hijacked ?) 2v3rg44

  • Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt
  • Please post the contents of the log in your next reply.

NOTE:
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console

Browser redirects to Shopica and various sites (Hijacked ?) Query_RC
Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
Browser redirects to Shopica and various sites (Hijacked ?) RC_successful

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

Are the redirects gone now?

Still doesn't seem totally right. I got one re-direct while on GeekPolice.net. This happened when I used the back arrow to go from one page back to another. I was surprised that doing this took me to one of "those sites" rather than the previous page I had been viewing at GeekPolice.net.

Additionally, my favorites in IE no longer work. They are not associated with any URL. The icons beside the names of favorites in my list all look the same. Nothing happens when I click on any favorite in the list. If I hover the cursor over the name of a favorite, all it say is "internet shortcut". The URL associated with each favorite no longer shows like it used to.

Also, AVG9 Free gave me a warning that something was infected in ESET while the online scan was running. Was this an AVG false positive ?

Later, while running its normal auto-scheduled scan, AVG9 Free found and fixed an infection. I was away from my computer and this scan ran and did this automatically. I hope this does not create additional work for you.

Here is the information from that AVG9 Free scan:

"C:\System Volume Information\_restore{2466A83D-1B81-456E-9766-38C2B7E48210}\RP295\A0027157.sys";"Virus identified Win32/Patched.DX";"Moved to Virus Vault"

I feel like we may have a little more work to do !

As always, any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Please download DrWeb-CureIt and save it to your Desktop. Do NOT perform a scan yet

  • Double-click on drweb-cureit.exe to start the program.
An Express Scan of your PC notice will appear.
  • Under Start the Express Scan Now, Click OK to start the scan.
This is a short scan that will scan the files currently running in memory.
If something is found, click the Yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it.
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
  • Choose the Scan tab and UNcheck Heuristic analysis
  • Back at the main window, click Custom Scan, then Select drives (a red dot will show which drives have been chosen).
  • Then click the Start/Stop Scanning button (green arrow on the right, and the scan will start.
  • When finished, a message will be displayed at the bottom advising if any viruses were found.
  • Click Yes to all if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can see the icon next to the files found.
If so, click it, then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable.
(This will move it to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if it can't be cured)
  • Next, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list.
  • Save the DrWeb.csv report to your Desktop.
  • Exit Dr.Web Cureit when you have finished.
  • Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report)

I followed your instructions, but it seems that there a few more steps than what was included in your instructions. Anyway, DrWeb-CureIt has completed. The scan took about 30 minutes to finish. It seems to have done a rather lengthy scan ~15,000 items. There is also a green Dr. WEB pop-up that appears offering a selection of Full version of Free trial. I did not click on it and the scan continue until completion.

It states "No viruses found" at the bottom of the window. I went to "Settings" and UNchecked "Heuristic Analysis" - selected "OK" - went back to main window and selected "Custom Scan" - C, D and E drives show up with "+" signs beside them, but there are no red dots. There is an arrow button, a pause button and a stop button visible under the green Dr. WEB logo, but all are greyed-out and no scan starts when the arrow is clicked.

Additionally, when I go to "File" - the option for "Save Report List" is greyed out and I have no way to save the requested report list in order to post it for you.

I am posting this on my laptop while my desktop is running DrWeb-CureIt again.

Have I done something incorrectly ? Thanks !

Save these instructions so you can have access to them while in Safe Mode.

Please click here to download AVP Tool by Kaspersky.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
  • Double click the setup file to run it.
  • Click Next to continue.
  • Accept the License agreement and click on next.
  • It will, by default, install it to your desktop folder. Click Next.
  • It will then open a box There will be a tab that says Automatic scan.
  • Under Automatic scan make sure these are checked.
  • Hidden Startup Objects
  • System Memory
  • Disk Boot Sectors.
  • My Computer.
  • Also any other drives (Removable that you may have)
Leave the rest of the settings as they appear as default.
  • Then click on Scan at the to right hand Corner.
  • It will automatically Neutralize any objects found.
  • If some objects are left un-neutralized then click the button that says Neutralize all
  • If it says it cannot be neutralized then choose the delete option when prompted.
  • After that is done click on the reports button at the bottom and save it to file name it Kas.
  • Save it somewhere convenient like your desktop and just post only the detected Virus\malware in the report it will be at the very top under Detected post those results in your next reply.

Note: This tool will self uninstall when you close it so please save the log before closing it.

This scan just completed. Wow ! It took 6 hours and 35 minutes. I have clicked on "Report" and it I can see the results you want to look at, but Ido not see any option that allows me to save it.

There were two items detected and deleted. Since I can't seem to save the report, do you wish for me to type the informatiion for you ?

I am sending this from my other computer. The Kapersky Report and program are still open on my compromised system. Thanks.

Still got the redirects?

descriptionBrowser redirects to Shopica and various sites (Hijacked ?) EmptyRe: Browser redirects to Shopica and various sites (Hijacked ?)

more_horiz
I don't seem to have any more redirects.

The only issue I notice is that the process of cleaning up this infection seems to have deactivated my Favorites. None of them will link to websites. When I hover the cursor over each Favorite in the list, no URL information is shown. The descriptive window that pops up simply states
Type: Internet Shortcut
Date Modified: whatever date I saved the favorite
Size: most show 150 to 300 bytes

Additionally, the icon beside each favorite is exactly the same. The icon is not an IE icon, nor a logo from a particular website. It looks like a piece of paper with the right upper corner folded down. It has a graphic on it that is a square with a dark blue band across the top. It looks like there is one white dot in this blue band. Under this blue band are two items. The left-side item is red - the right-side item is a lighter blue color. Sorry I can't better describe this icon, because it is quite small.

Also, newly created Favorites do not work either. As an experiment, I just added this forum page. It shows up in my Favorites list - with the same icon as all the other previous entries. Hovering the cursor over it gives me this information
Type: Internet Shortcut
Date Modified: 7/14/10 10:42 PM
Size 334 bytes

Other than this issue, my system seems to be working well.

Do you have any suggestions to "reactivate" these Favorite links ? If not, I will just build a new list. This is probably a small price to pay in order to eradicate an infection from my system.

Finally, suggested tools added during this disinfection process still are on my Desktop. I will await instruction from you before I do anything about that.

Thank you for your patience and cordial assistance as we have worked through this issue. It is greatly appreciated.

descriptionBrowser redirects to Shopica and various sites (Hijacked ?) EmptyRe: Browser redirects to Shopica and various sites (Hijacked ?)

Looks like they must have gotten deleted. Probably by the infection.

If they are not in the Recycle Bin, then they are probably permanently gone.

descriptionBrowser redirects to Shopica and various sites (Hijacked ?) EmptyRe: Browser redirects to Shopica and various sites (Hijacked ?)

more_horiz
Thanks for the reply. No more redirects have occurred, so I think that issue has been corrected.

The non-working Favorites are causing me some issues. None are in the Recycle Bin. All are still listed in the Favorites list. The problem is that they are not associated with a URL. They do not link to anything. Nothing happens when they are clicked on.

Also, when I create new Favorites. They will show up in my Favorites list, but they do not work.

Something is still preventing Favorites from functioning correctly. This problem began after we started making changes with some of the disinfecting tools that affected registry entries.

In researching this issue, I have read that this is likely due to some registry changes that have been made. I don't really understand this registry stuff, so I will not do anything without your instruction and advice.

Here is the suggested fix from another website that was addressing the issue of non-working Favorites:

Open Registry Editor and navigate to:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\InternetShortcut
Backup this key and save as REG file.
Now delete 'InternetShortcut' key.
Open Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options, Programs
Choose "Reset Web Settings"
The URL association should be rebuilt now.

I do not know how to use Registry Editor, nor do I know if this information is really valid.

I would, however, like to ask if you could help me get my Favorites working again. Thanks !

DragonMaster Jay,

Thanks for letting me know the "Reset Web Settings" was a good idea. I followed your instructions and my Favorites are now functional again.

Additionally, I have had no more redirects since our last communication !

Now, what do I do about cleaning up RootKit Unhooker, ComboFix, Dr. Web CureIt and Kapersky Virus Removal Tool setup off of my desktop. Shall I leave them alone for the time being, or should they be deleted/uninstalled or whatever ?

Thanks.

Still not sure that everything is cleaned up.

I just used Google to search for the website of my cell phone provider. Clicked on the Google result and I landed on the correct site, but at the bottom of my screen I saw the names of other "ad-type" sites quickly opening.

I then received a "Security Alert" regarding the site's security certificate. It stated that the security certitficate is from a trusted certifying authority and that the security certificate is valid BUT warned that the name on the security certificate is invalid or does not match the name of the site.

When I view the certificate it shows:

Now to get you off to a good start we will clean your restore points so that all the bad stuff is gone for good. Then if you need to restore at some stage you will be clean. There are several ways to reset your restore points, but this is my method:
  • Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > System Restore.
  • On the dialogue box that appears select Create a Restore Point
  • Click NEXT
  • Enter a name e.g. Clean
  • Click CREATE

You now have a clean restore point, to get rid of the bad ones:
  • Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk Cleanup.
  • In the Drop down box that appears select your main drive e.g. C
  • Click OK
  • The System will do some calculation and the display a dialogue box with TABS
  • Select the More Options Tab.
  • At the bottom will be a system restore box with a CLEANUP button click this
  • Accept the Warning and select OK again, the program will close and you are done

To remove all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created, please do the following:
Please download OTC.exe by OldTimer:

  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click OTC.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes.

Note: If any tool, file or folder (belonging to the program we have used) hasn't been deleted, please delete it manually.

==

Please download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop
  • Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
  • Click the Start
button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp
files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute
or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  • Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.

==

Download Security Check by screen317 from SpywareInfoforum.org or Changelog.fr.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Once old versions are gone, please install the newest version.

========================

Please read the following information that I have provided, which will help you prevent malicious software in the future. Please keep in mind, malware is a continuous danger on the Internet. It is highly important to stay safe while browsing, to prevent re-infection.

Software recommendations

Firewall

  • Tallemu Online Armor: the free version is just as good as the premium. I have linked you to the free version.
  • Comodo Firewall: the free version is just as good as the premium. I have linked you to the free version. The optional security suite enhances the firewall by 40% increase. If you would like to install the suite that includes antivirus, then remove your old antivirus first.
  • PC Tools Firewall Plus: free and excellent firewall.

AntiSpyware

  • SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster is a program that prevents spyware from installing on your computer. A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster may be found here.
  • Spybot - Search & Destroy.
Spybot - Search & Destroy is a spyware and adware removal program. It also has realtime protection, TeaTimer to help safeguard your computer against spyware. (The link for Spybot - Search & Destroy contains a tutorial that will help you download, install, and begin using Spybot).

NOTE: Please keep ALL of these programs up-to-date and run them whenever you suspect a problem to prevent malware problems.

Resident Protection help
A number of programs have resident protection and it is a good idea to run the resident protection of one of each type of program to maintain protection. However, it is important to run only one resident program of each type since they can conflict and become less effective. That means only one antivirus, firewall, and scanning anti-spyware program at a time. Passive protectors such as SpywareBlaster can be run with any of them.

Securing your computer

  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • hpHosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. This prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1, which is your local computer's loopback address, meaning it will be difficult to infect your computer in the future.

Please consider using an alternate browser
Mozilla's Firefox browser is a very good alternative. In addition to being generally more secure than Internet Explorer, it has a very good built-in popup blocker and add-ons, like NoScript, can make it even more secure. Opera is another good option.

Since the above-referenced malware was removed from my computer, I have not had the need to utilize my internal DVD Burner - until today. I am not sure if this is related to any of the disinfection procedures or if it is another issue entirely, but I thought I would ask your opinion about this issue.

If I am not mistaken, it seems that there was something suspicious related to my ATAPI and cdrom drivers.

RKU showed:

>Stealth
==============================================
0xF7411000 WARNING: suspicious driver modification [atapi.sys::0x86383AEA]
0xF76C8000 WARNING: Virus alike driver modification [cdrom.sys], 53248 bytes
==============================================

You then asked me to do this with Combo Fix:

killall::
TDL::
c:\windows\system32\drivers\cdrom.sys
c:\windows\system32\drivers\atapi.sys

Reboot::

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Could any of this be contributing to my current issue ?

My burner / player will play recorded DVD and CD media perfectly, however it will not recognize blank media when I install it to burn. As soon as a blank DVD is inserted, it begins to spin continuously at a high rate of speed. Burning software does not show that the blank media has been detected. Closing the burning software does not stop the spinning. As a matter of fact, the blank media spins continuously and will not stop even when there are no applications or processes open. I should add that I am using the same blank media (DVD-R) from the same package of blank media that has always worked properly. I have also tried numerous DVD's from a stack of 100 of these blank media to rule out whether the discs were faulty or not.

While the blank media is spinning.... if I open "My Computer" to view properties of my E: drive - and right click on the E: drive - I get an hourglass and no window opens up for me to view properties. Everything seems to hang up at this point. When I finally get this closed down via Task Manager, my desktop has no icons visible - no Start icon or anything - and the blank media is still spinning at high speed in the DVD burner / player. The only thing I can do to restore functionality is to manually shut off my machine with the power switch.

The only thing that seems to stop the spinning media is blind luck. I push the eject button on the internal DVD burner / player....sometimes this stops the spinning media and it ejects correctly....sometimes pushing the eject button does nothing at all.... sometimes pushing the eject button opens the drawer with the blank media still spinning at top speed. Very confusing.

Device Manager says that the device is working properly and that I have the most updated driver available for the device.

Any ideas, troubleshooting tips, or instructions for me to follow ?

As always, thanks in advance for your assistance.

Go to this page, and click on the Run now button: http://support.microsoft.com/gp/cd_dvd_drive_problems

It will run a diagnostic to tell you why you cannot play media, etc.

DragonMaster Jay,

Thanks for the recommendation, but it is not working.

This computer will not connect to the Microsoft Support site. I have clicked on the link you gave me above. I have manually entered that URL in the address bar. I have also tried support.microsoft.com as well. No luck connecting with any of these methods.

My other computer readily accesses the link you have provided, so I'm guessing that there is still something not quite right with this computer.

Any further assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Not sure why I was not able to access the Microsoft Security website earlier today. I was able to easily get to it with no issues tonight. I ran the diagnostic you requested. The log is posted below. Thank you.

Now, try a CD and let me know if it works.

descriptionBrowser redirects to Shopica and various sites (Hijacked ?) EmptyRe: Browser redirects to Shopica and various sites (Hijacked ?)

No. Not working correctly !

1) Will not recognize blank DVD-R media
- Burning software states "Device not ready...or no media present"
- Endless spinning of disc
- Will sometimes stop disc and eject it when "eject" button is pressed
- Will sometimes open drawer with disc still at full speed when "eject"
button is pressed

2) Played a recorded CD perfectly

Very confusing !

Ohhh, now I get it. I just thought it was with CDs, my bad.

Download and run this tool:
http://www.digitalsupporttech.com/download/tools/FixCdRomTypeError.exe

It will fix how Windows recognize correct disc types.

==============

  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:

    Code:

    :reg
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318]

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

DragonMaster Jay,

The link provided is not working: http://www.digitalsupporttech.com/download/tools/FixCdRomTypeError.exe

It generates a 404 Error stating that the requested resource (FixCdRomTypeError.exe) is not available.

Looking forward to your next reply. Thank you.
