Hi,
A couple of weeks ago, I started having problems with my PC. It wouldn't open any applications (Word, SpySweeper, etc...). I would get a pop up window that would give me a list of programs to use in order to open whatever application I wanted to use. Internet Explorer was working.
I checked the Microsoft Knowledge Base and it appears that the registry on my PC is corrupted (since I can run anything with .com or .exe, etc...). I could not use the Guided Help option on the Microsoft website for the same reason.
I probably did something foolish by googling for solutions and I tried the one found at the link below.
http://www.pchell.com/support/recoverfromcorruptedregistry.shtml
Unfortunately, I did not get very far.
This is the section that I attempted to do. It is at the beginning of that link if you click on it.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Copy Repair Files Using the Recovery Console
This procedure assumes Windows is installed on Drive C, if you have installed Windows on another drive, please substitute the appropriate drive letter in the procedure below.
At the Recovery Console command prompt, type the following lines, pressing ENTER after you type each line:
md tmp
copy c:\windows\system32\config\system c:\windows\tmp\system.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\software c:\windows\tmp\software.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\sam c:\windows\tmp\sam.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\security c:\windows\tmp\security.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\default c:\windows\tmp\default.bak
delete c:\windows\system32\config\system
delete c:\windows\system32\config\software
delete c:\windows\system32\config\sam
delete c:\windows\system32\config\security
delete c:\windows\system32\config\default
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
I ran into problems with this next section as I got an error message saying that the subdirectories "system", "sam", "security", etc... did not exist in c:\windows\system32\config
copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system
copy c:\windows\repair\software c:\windows\system32\config\software
copy c:\windows\repair\sam c:\windows\system32\config\sam
copy c:\windows\repair\security c:\windows\system32\config\security
copy c:\windows\repair\default c:\windows\system32\config\default
When I restart the PC, I get a black screen with the error message that the file c:\windows\system32\config\system does not exist or is corrupted.
That's where I have been stuck so far. Any help you can provide me would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
