Hi,
I posted this in the Hardware Problems area a few days ago but received no replies. I occures to me that it's probably a Vista problem so I'm taking the liberty of reposting here.

Original Post
Hi,
This is my first post. A friend has an Advent 6311 laptop (Advent is an 'in house' brand of P.C. World computer superstore chain in the UK) it has T2390 chip and runs Vista Home Premium.
My friend has hardly ever used the machine and it's long out of warrantee but he has brought the thing to me to record a backup DVD. When I tried to do so I found that the DVD drive is not recognised. My friend tells me that nothing has changed so I assume it was never regognised but he failed to notice(!)
I can confirm that the drive is recognised in the BIOS, and I have tried uninstalling the drive in the hope that Vista will discover the drive on reboot with no luck. Can anyone assist please?

Googling indicates that this machine is a re-badged Uniwill L75II8 but since I'm not familiar with that brand it's not helpful to me. I include it here in the hope it may assist in identifying a cure.
