This guide will give you easy instructions on how to uninstall or get rid Digital Proection for free.

What is Digital Proection? (Information)

Digital Proection is a fake security software which uses fraudulent strategies by displaying false or exaggerated security issues on your computer rather than any legitimate ones to coerce you into purchasing their software.

Digital Proection infect victims through misleading advertisements on legitimate websites. An advertisement pops up and redirects you to a malicious page where it gets downloaded. It disables your security applications such as your antivirus and firewalls.

Follow these instructions to continue:

You have to start computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:

  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode with Networking.

1. Open Task Manager by continually pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc.

I have also followed the instructions (running Windows XP), except there were slight differences at some points:

I managed to start my computer in "Safe Mode With Networking", but it wasn't the first option in the list when booting up. It was the second. The first one was just "Safe Mode". This is a minor difference.

3. Locate for the processes called digprot.exe and ave.exe. End their processes one at a time by click the End Process button at the bottom left hand corner of Task Manager and click Yes.

Neither of these processes were running. It may be because I had to use the Administrator user profile instead of the user profile that was in use when the virus installed itself. I had to do this because the Task Manager would not open in the original user profile (I kept getting an alert box saying that Task Manager had been disabled by administrator).

Upon completing all the steps, my machine booted into normal mode (as opposed to safe mode) and I went into the original user profile (non-Administrator). The pornographic icons set on my desktop and in my Start menu were removed, but the icons for the actual "Digital Protection" program were still present, and the popups and alerts produced by the virus were still showing up.

EDIT: Successfully removed (maybe) ----------
After the first time that this didn't work, I followed the instructions here while in safe mode:

I did not see all of the registry items in the list on that page. The only ones that the program found for me were these two:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [hsf87efjhdsf87f3jfsdi7fhsujfd] C:\DOCUME~1\Mak\LOCALS~1\Temp\avp.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Digital Protection] "C:\Program Files\Digital Protection\digprot.exe" -noscan

I think I also had to be in the Administrator profile to be able to delete the davcInt.exe manually in the Temp folder listed.

But that still didn't work, so I came back here and ran through all of the steps again, this time doing a full system scan with Malwarebites instead of the quick scan. It took almost an hour and a half, but once I restarted my computer in normal mode, everything seemed to be restored to normal function, except that two Digital Protection icons remained on my Desktop.

Another edit: the start menu folder for Digital Protection is still there, too. Any tips on how to completely and absoƖute get these things removed?

Last edit, I promise: I went into the Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs and Digital Protection was still there, but when I clicked the Change/Remove button for it I got a message saying that Digital Protection might have already been uninstalled, so maybe everything is hunky dory Hooray!

Hey folks, I was relieved to see I wasn't the only one that got hit with this damn virus. I tried your solution and had the very same problem as rhodeb - could not get to Task Manager. So I used the link provided by LSN and in there Ambucias (post on Apr 10, 2010, 11:20am) offered a solution that resolved it for me. Thanks Geek guys.

I appear to have this on my computer, but when I run your steps it didn't remove it. I was having a few problems. The first is the processes don't show under my administrator setting. Second when I try to go under the Task Manager under the non-administrator setting to see if the processes are there it says the Task manager has been disabled by the administrator. Finally when I did run the Maleware software it would find and identify the problems say it was deleting them and needed to restart but upon restart the problem still occured. How do I fix these issues?

Had to use F5 for boot options.
Logged in as Administrator in Safe mode.
Processes were not running under the Admin user.
Removed virus.
So far so good.
Thanks!
