Good Day All (I think)

My dearest son has presented me with a problem that "popped" up, literally, 5 days ago. Gotta love teenagers.

Massive pop-ups, there is a splash screen that is covering the desktop (desktop is available by drilling down through My Computer>Documents & Settings>User name). Malwarebyte's is not available because the mbam.exe is being blocked, I cannot access the Task Manager by right clicking the bar at the bottom of the page. AVG has been over-ridden. I cannot use System restore to roll back to clean save, states corrupted. Safe Mode is also unavailable. Unable to access/utilize MS Update and at this time I am concerned about updating or changing anything on his computer for fear of infection/corruption.

His computer has IE 8 installed however we do not use IE, we are using Firefox, current version is 3.6 I believe. I went into the internet options for IE 8 and cleared all the settings.

I had an issue similar to this on another computer in my home over a year ago and I really don't want to spend the next 6 days fumbling around trying to figure it out, again. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

~The splash screen covering the DT states:

YOUR SYSTEM IS INFECTED!! System has been stopped sue to services malfunction. Spyware activity has been detected. It is recommended to use spyware removal tool to prevent data loss. Do not use the computer until all spyware removed.

~Main Ballloon pop-up: Your computer is infected! Windows has detected an infection of spyware! It is recommended to use special antispyware tools to prevent data loss. Windows will now download and install the most up-to-date antispyware for you.

If you click the bubble and not the "X" it attempts to download Internet Security 10

~One on the main warnings I get:
Attention! System detected potential hazard (TrojanSPM/LX) on your computer that may infect executable files. Your private information and PC safety is at risk. To get rid of unwanted spyware and keep your computer safe you need to update your current security software. Click ok to download official intrusion detection software (IDS software).

~Computer - XP Prof SP 2 build 2002, HP rebuild

~TOO may pop-ups to mention

~Here is the current HJT log

With matters such as these, when the computer is not in use it is disconnected from the net, via removing the wire, I do not trust Disabling the NIC. I will check back in a few hours to see if anyone has found the time to assist me. I know you folks are busy. I am posting this from my personal computer so we don't need to turn his on again. Notepad is a wonderous thing.

When there is a reply, I will go turn on/log in to his computer for your fixes and to answer questions from his computer.

Thank you for any assistance you may be able to provide. I have a feeling reformatting the computer won't help. I really do not want to reload it and deal with MS CSRs, their computer intelligence seems to be less than mine. Smile...

Hello.

  • Download combofix from here
    Link 1
    Link 2

    1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

    * Tools->Options->Main tab
    * Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

    2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

    vosemuji.dll,tuvujuka.dll et al CF_download_FF

    vosemuji.dll,tuvujuka.dll et al CF_download_rename

    3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
    4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
    5. Close any open browsers.
    6. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.
  • See HERE for how to disable your AV.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

    vosemuji.dll,tuvujuka.dll et al Cf410

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will then get this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

    vosemuji.dll,tuvujuka.dll et al Cf510

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Unable to complete the instructions for stopping AVG - the required command is greyed out so that I cannot click on it.

I looked at the services and the AVG related services are stopped and disabled.

Not to sound redundant but I mentioned in my original post that AVG has been overridden and I cannot access it.

If I could get to the task manager I would stop the processes that way, however I cannot access Task Manager.

Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /uninstall

This will also reset your restore points.

How is the machine running now?

It looks great, thank you.

Any recommendations for Anti-virus software that doesn't get nullified as easy as AVG??

You aren't running Anti Virus Software

Please install Avira antivirus otherwise you won't be protected.

1) Antivir PersonalEditionClassic
-Free anti-virus software for Windows.
-Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts.

Well I thought it was over; the AV has picked up something. Full scan is not complete yet.

Okay, it might be a leftover; system restore point, or temp files perhaps.

Note: Avira also picks up on locked files, one will be pagefile.sys, it's legit and nothing to worry about.

Dumb question - can this AV be left running while gaming? My son is into Evercrack 2 and I would like to keep this in the background while he plays.

descriptionvosemuji.dll,tuvujuka.dll et al EmptyRe: vosemuji.dll,tuvujuka.dll et al

more_horiz
In theory, yes, but I wouldn't recommend it. The scan will be over faster if you let Avira use your CPU as needed. Playing games while it's doing this will cause the scan to take longer and the games will likely lag.

D'oh my bad, I meant while the AV is running in the background normally, not scanning, can he play online without significant lag issues in the game?

Sorry about not being clear.

When scanning the computers I have nothing running but the AV program.

An AV should be left running all the time, an AV is your first defence aside from a firewall, if your AV is switched off, then what's gonna stop the malware returning?

If it's just the real-time shield that's left running, then yes you can.

Thanks a bunch. THe issues found were in may restore points, so I have deleted to old ones, using System Restore software, and will recreate a new one in a few minutes.

Thanks for the help and answers to my questions.

1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (or the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box), and then click OK.
4. Click Yes when you receive the prompt to the turn off System Restore.

Now we need to make a new restore point.
To turn on System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (To turn on System Restore), and then click OK.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
I also recommand the following add-ons for Firefox, they will help keep you safe from malicious scripts or activeX exploits.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/433

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

To help you keep your software updated, please considering using this free software program that will check for program updates.
Update Checker

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or
Outpost
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

If you would take a moment to fill out our feedback form, we would appreciate it.
The link can be found here.

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. Big Grin

Thank you for the follow up.

Restore Point already created using your process. I will get the other programs loaded on his computer.

IE is not used on his computer, only Firefox, (we are currently test-driving Chrome as an alternate). IE is used for MS Updates only.

I would hope I never have to speak with you guys again, however there is always hackers who try to make up repeaters. Open Grin
