I am trying to troubleshoot a system which has become infected with malware which produces a multiple of popup warning windows saying "Application cannot be executed. The file xxxxx.xxx (usually starting with wuauclt.exe) is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus software now?"

It also produces a generic looking "Infiltration Alert" in the bottom right of the screen.

I cannot run any programs or utilities in normal mode.

I was able to save most of the files from the system, but would really like to fix it without having to wipe the drive and start over.

I have run Norton, Spyware Doctor, GMER and Malwarebytes in safe mode. Norton found nothing. Malwarebytes found three different infections on two instances. Norton, Spyware Doctor and GMER found nothing. I have cleaned all the temp files.

Following are the logs from Hi-JackThis and Malwarebytes:

Download OTL by OldTimer to your Desktop.

  • Close all windows and double click OTL.exe
  • Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted
  • It will produce two logs for you, one will pop up - OTL.txt, the other will be saved on your Desktop - Extras.txt. Post both logs in this thread.
  • You may need to use two posts to get it all.

Hmm, please do the following:

Download the GMER rootkit scan from here: GMER

  1. Unzip it and start GMER.
  2. Click the >>> tab and then click the Scan button.
  3. Once done, click the Copy button.
  4. This will copy the results to your clipboard.
  5. Paste the results in your next reply.
Note:
If you're having problems with running GMER.exe, try it in safe mode. This tools works in safe mode.
You can also try renaming it since some malware blocks GMER.

I have already run MER, and it came up with nothing. I won't be able to run it in normal mode (I cannot run anything in normal mode due to all the pop-ups).

I will run GMER once more, just to check.

I have a meeting to go to, but will post the results in about 1 1/2 hours.

Thanks,

Hello.

  • Download combofix from here
    Link 1
    Link 2

    1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

    * Tools->Options->Main tab
    * Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

    2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

Help!! Serious malware attack (Cannot run except in safe mode) CF_download_FF

Help!! Serious malware attack (Cannot run except in safe mode) CF_download_rename

    3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
    4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
    5. Close any open browsers.
    6. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.
  • See HERE for how to disable your AV.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

Help!! Serious malware attack (Cannot run except in safe mode) Cf410

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will then get this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

Help!! Serious malware attack (Cannot run except in safe mode) Cf510

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

The log follows. However, I have been unable to figure out how to disable Norton AV 2006 while running in sage mode (it won't uninstall in the normal fashion). I don't see any obvious process running that appears to relate to it, so I am a bit stuck.

Heres the log:

Actually, I just managed to get rid of the Norton Anti-Virus. Here is a new ComboFix log.

Also, I believe that something is corrupted in the root of the HD, as chkdsk indicated a dirty drive.

Thanks.
