Hi,
I can't run anything. I continue to see a Virus alert pop-up windw that mentions WIN32/Nuqel.E and BankerFox.A files, plus also mentions other random files. Anytime I attempt to run any virus removal tool or ANY application, I get this message...Application can not be executed. the file pctsgui.exe(or whatever executable is triggered) is infected.

Please advise,
MISjacki

Please download the current version of HijackThis from HERE

  • Double click and run the installer.
  • It will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\hijackthis.exe
  • After installing, you should get the user agreement, press accept and Hijack This will run.
  • Select Do a system scan and save a log file. This will open a notepad file of everything Hijack This found, copy and paste it back here.

Hello,

Note ** Since my desktop PC will not let me connect to the internet nor run ANYTHING, I'm having to do all this work from my laptop. I'm having to copy the downloaded files...Hijack This...to a disk and run the software on my desktop from the disk.

So... I attempted to run Hijack This, and a "Windows Installer" window pops up and reads "preparing to install..."

But IMMEDIATELY another "Security Warning" window pops up and reads...

"Application can not be executed. The file msiexec.exe is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus sorftware now"

Then this "Antivirus Live" thing continues to pop up. I DID do a scan using that thing once, and it found 34 threats. 2 of them being the WIN32/Nuqel.E and BankerFox.A viruses. Then, of course, it wants me to purchase something to get rid of them.

Any idea what i could try now ?!?! please ?

Thanks!!
MISjacki

Hello.
Try running this.

Please download exeHelper from one of the two links.
Link 1
Link 2

  • Double-click on exeHelper.com or exeHelper.scr to run the fix.
  • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
  • Post the contents of log.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com)
Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

Ok. I ran exeHelper.com twice, as I could not tell what the contents of the file was for the first run. The window(for the .txt file) opened quickly then closed. I didn't have time to read the contents.

Below is the results from running it twice.

Rename IceSword to explorer so it's called explorer.exe, and then try again.
Keep trying, IceSword has a neat little trick where it renames itself when you open it.

Don't worry, haven't forgotten you, I went to bed.

Open IceSword again.

  • On the left hand side tool, hit the Startup button at the top of the list.
  • Just above the list, there is a log button, press that and save the log to your Desktop.
  • Next, hit the Process button at the top of the list, and press the log button again and save that log.
  • Post the two logs in your next reply.

Hi !!!

So sorry for the delay getting back to you, as I've been out of town for the holidays. Before I left, I turned off my PC. When I logged back on today, my Norton ran and perhaps it fixed 'some' things, because I can actually, now, get to the internet. However, things still don't seem to be working properly. I get weird messages when trying to do some things. I WAS able to run hijackthis - FINALLY!! YAY! Below is the contents of the log file, in its entirety...

But first, as a note - that may or may not give you some tip of what is going on...I tried to install Microsoft Security Essentials and am not able to install. I get this message just before it tries to install...
error code:0x80070002

I did a search for the error and it indicates that something on the registry may have changed, which i suppose could be causing some problems. Perhaps you, the expert, may know what the error means.

Anyways, here are the contents of the hijackthis log...

...and THANKS in advance for the help !!!
MISjacki

The virus alert pop-ups have stopped, and it seems to be working OK.
I've noticed 1 additional problem though...

I have a need to un-install and re-install my printer software.
When I go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs, the list of programs that I have installed will never load. So I am not able to un-install anything.

When I googled the problem, I found that there may by something missing or wrong in the registry.

Is that something that you can help me with as well ?

THANKS !!!!
MISjacki

Hello.

  • Download combofix from here
    Link 1
    Link 2

    1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

    * Tools->Options->Main tab
    * Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

    2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

Hi. Please help. I can't run ANYTHING of my PC CF_download_FF

Hi. Please help. I can't run ANYTHING of my PC CF_download_rename

    3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
    4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
    5. Close any open browsers.
    6. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.
  • See HERE for how to disable your AV.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

Hi. Please help. I can't run ANYTHING of my PC Cf410

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will then get this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

Hi. Please help. I can't run ANYTHING of my PC Cf510

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.
