I have gotten a virus on my desktop computer. It started out as one of the anti-virus scam things I have seen before, with the pop-up as warnings like it was scanning my computer. I turned off the computer and restarted it. I came here on my laptop, read directions and downloaded malwarebytes. I transfered it over to the desktop and ran it. It found 13 infected files which I then had it delete. Malwarebytes could not load updates, (i had to do that manually) IE will not work, i cannot access internet, i have downloaded and transfered over hijack this and will post the log for that at the end of this. Hijack this gave me an error message stating : For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are inthis file, Hijackthis may NOT be able to fix this. Please help I need the internet back on the desktop I have work to do.

Hello.

I see that you are running Limewire.
P2P(Peer to peer) applications are designed to help you easily share and distribute files between you and a group of people. But they can also be used to distribute malware, and thus are not considered safe.
The removal of these programs is optional, but highly recommended.

  • Click Start >> Control Panel.
  • Under the Programs click Uninstall a Program
  • Highlight the following:

    Java(TM) 6 Update 13
    Java(TM) 6 Update 5
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7
    LimeWire 4.16.7

  • Click on the Uninstall/Change button at the top.

How is the machine running?

The computer is running very well. I deleted the java updates as suggested, however I choose to leave the limewire, it is rarely used, (3-4 times a year) but my husband loves it when he does get the chance. Other than that, instead of renewing my norton internet security I changed to Avira Anti-virus, Super Anti-Spyware and malwarebytes. I have got them all set up and running, and once they did they cleared out a bunch of crap. It seems to be running great now. thank you so much for all your help!
