file attributes display in Windows 7

I'm trying to alter Windows Explorer (Windows 7) so that every time I view a file, its 'details' are listed, not an icon or any of the other possibilities. I've tried to do this is 'Preferences' but that has not worked successfully. Any help would be appreciated.
