So a few days ago I got the system security malware. I followed many online guides. I used hijackthis to get rid of things and I used malwarebytes to delete trojans. Everything is gone now. But when I try to run a program, like microsoft word, a pop up says "Error application not found". When I try to run hijack this, i get a window that says "Open with" and asks me to choose a program. my task manager works and ive looked for processes with numbers but there are none. PLEASE help me!

here's the logfile from hijack this:

Please do the following:

1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

* Tools->Options->Main tab
* Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

System Security problems annoying! CF_download_FF

System Security problems annoying! CF_download_rename

3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
5. Close any open browsers.
6. We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.

  • See HERE for how to disable your AV.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
    Do not mouse click combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

combo fix uninstalled successfully. and everything is working great now. however, that red shield with an X is still by my clock. it says "windows security alert" when i put the mouse over it. I've tried turning it back on but it says i have to do it from "system" in the control panel. But there it says its already on.

it says that Automatic Updates are turned off. But under the "System" window in control panel, it says they are turned on.
Also, when clicking on the shield icon, it gives me the option to turn them on but once i try to turn them on, it says it cant.

Lets give this a try.

Please download this fix tool from here.

Double click it to run it.
Allow it to run if protection programs stop it.
The services should now be back to default value and no longer appear in Hijack This.

it ran but that little red shield with an X is still there.

to rephrase the issue: the little red shield is telling me that Automatic Updates are turned off. When I go into the Windows Security Center to turn them on, it wont let me. It says to do it under "system". When i go there, it says they are already on.

Hello.
Please download Combofix again, I want to run a script.

Hello.

Now open a new notepad file.
Input this into the notepad file:

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\services]
"lsass"=-
"cmdService"=-
"NetSvc"=-
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center]
"AntiVirusOverride"=-

RegNull::
[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-3718120316-2962900541-1544400087-1006\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Approved\{269ACD91-1918-BD05-1028-476C5D1839CA}*]

Save this as CFScript.txt, save it to your desktop also.
Then drag and drop CFScript.txt into combofix as seen below:
System Security problems annoying! Sfxdaw

This will open combofix again, agree to it's terms and allow it to run.
It may want to reboot after it's done. (It will warn you if it wants to)
Post the resulting log back here.

Nope. Still tells me to go to "system" under control panel. But when I go there, it says its already on. Yet the little pop up by my clock tells me it's not. I have a link to some pictures of it.

I wonder if it's a bug.
Turn automatic updates off, then switch them back on again, it should work itself out then.

Download OTL by OldTimer to your Desktop.

  • Close all windows and double click OTListIt2.exe
  • Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted
  • It will produce two logs for you, one will pop up - OTListIt2.txt, the other will be saved on your Desktop - Extras.txt. Post both logs in this thread.
  • You may need to use two posts to get it all.
