I dunno if this might be malware, a virus, or what, but I'm getting strange redirects when clicking on links, and some just give up with a 404 error.

Anyway, I've updated Java, updated Adobe Reader, updated WinXP with all critical patches, and here's the Hijack This log:

Oh...I might add that my dad (who's computer this is) says that CA Anti-spyware was flagging something called 'Kollah', but Malware Bytes and CA Anti-spyware can't seem to find it now... Perhaps they were able to remove it? (I wasn't here for that part).

descriptionUnknown Infection EmptyRe: Unknown Infection

Please remove wordwrap from notepad as it makes it harder to read the log, open notepad, go to format, and click on wordwrap, now do another HijackThis scan and post the log back here.

Wow! Was already on page 2. Ya'all are busy!

Anyway, sorry about the log. In the meantime, my nephew says he removed something called 'Skynet'. I politely asked him to hold off doing ANYTHING till I get the work from you.

Here's the latest HJT log...and I can guarantee that no further action will be taken unless it is recommended by Geek Police:

Hello.

Yeah, we are having a flood of traffic recently and were doing our best to keep up.

Thanks for letting me know about Skynet, saves us having to track down which piece of malware is the cause. Ahahaha

Before getting rid of the rootkit though, I want to remove a few things.

  • Open HijackThis.
  • When Hijack This opens, click "Open the Misc Tools section"
  • Then select "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Click on "Save List..." (generates uninstall_list.txt)
  • Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Hello.

I want to remove CA, they have too many false positives and not a good reputation for removal.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs.

    CA Internet Security Suite

Next,

  • Download combofix from here
    Link 1
    Link 2

    1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

    * Tools->Options->Main tab
    * Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

    2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

    Unknown Infection CF_download_FF

    Unknown Infection CF_download_rename

    3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
    4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
    5. Close any open browsers.
    6. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.
  • See HERE for how to disable your AV.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

    Unknown Infection Rcauto10

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will then get this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

    Unknown Infection Whatne10

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

CA Antivirus and CA Antispyware uninstalled, but the Antispam left in place, as it is too useful.

Hello.

Please install Avira antivirus otherwise you won't be protected.

1) Antivir PersonalEditionClassic
-Free anti-virus software for Windows.
-Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts.

Next, delete this folder in bold:
c:\program files\Coupons

How is the machine running now?

For now, I'm running Avast free version. If you think Avira is a better choice, I'd certainly be willing to go that route.

As far as the system, it has seemed fine for the last day or so, but after my nephew messing with it I wanted to make sure that the system was clean.
