Hi,
I have been hit hard with the System Security 2009 malware. I stopped the popups by unchecking the 18409844 program from startup. At this point XP pro will not start most .exe programs. I cannot open any windows diagnostic tools. All I get is the "open with" dialog box no matter what I try to open (including winlog). For some reason I CAN open internet explorer and it seems to be working fine. I have another active laptop that I can borrow to get info from. I have read your removal guide but cannot open any programs to get it started. Please Help!!

Hello.
Please download Hijack This via this link:
http://www.sendspace.com/pro/dl/932rpd

See if you can run that.

descriptionSystem Security 2009 EmptyRe: System Security 2009

Thank you for the reply.
I can download it but when I try to run it I only get to the "open with" dialog box. Same dialog box I get trying to run anything except IE.
I can get to the registry through safe mode command prompt. I have deleted 2 folders with about 8 registries in each folder full of SystemSecurity files. The file name for my virus is "1840984" if that maters. What do you suggest next?

See if you can run these:

  • Please download DDS by sUBs to your Desktop (Important!!) from one of these locations:
    Link 1
    Link 2
  • Double click DDS.scr to run.
  • When complete, two logs will open. Save both of the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste DDS.txt back here, I don't need to see attach.txt.

Thanks but it still ends at the "open with" dialog box. Next:)

Hello.
Please visit this site.

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Look for line 12 (they are numbered) called "EXE (lnk and regfile) Fix for Windows XP"

It's a reg file, so right click "EXE (lnk and regfile) Fix for Windows XP" > save link as.. and it shoudl save as a .reg file.

Save it to your desktop, then double click the .reg file and run it.
Select yes to merge with the registry.

Hello.
Nearly done now, just three more things to do.

Please download the OTMoveIt by OldTimer.

  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTM.exe to run it.
  • Copy the bolded text below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    :files
    c:\windows\system32\uactmp.db
    c:\windows\system32\hjgruikjnblnms.dat
    c:\windows\system32\hjgruitjxkrxdp.dat
    c:\windows\system32\UACthqesmimorubnanlp.db
    c:\windows\system32\UACiymspmtvxorjkidtp.dat
    c:\windows\system32\UACtcflgtedauirxkkfx.dat

  • Return to OTMoveIt, right click in the "Paste instructions for items to be Moved" window (under the light blue bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Save the log that it gaves you. Then after that, we'll need an uninstall log.

  • Open HijackThis.
  • When Hijack This opens, click "Open the Misc Tools section"
  • Then select "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Click on "Save List..." (generates uninstall_list.txt)
  • Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Please post the OTM log, and the uninstall log. Use more than one post if needed.

Can i post the problem i have in this thread? I had the same problem with System Security 2009.
I followed instructions on another website and got Malwarebyte's anti malware. I used that
to scan and remove alot of the virus's/trojans. When i start my computer up the System Security thing doesn't
come up anymore. But i can hear alot of random clicks and then random voices popping up. When i go to my processes
it shows that 3 - 4 Internet explorer processes are running. I will end them all, but in 10 minutes they're all back up again.
What can i do about this? This means i've only removed half of the virus?

EDIT: NVM, i started my own post.

I see that you are running BitComet.
P2P(Peer to peer) applications are designed to help you easily share and distribute files between you and a group of people. But they can also be used to distribute malware, and thus are not considered safe.
The removal of these programs is optional, but highly recommended.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs.

    Adobe Reader 7.0.9
    BitComet 0.68
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_05
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

How is the machine running now?

descriptionSystem Security 2009 EmptyRe: System Security 2009

My machine seems to be running great. You rock!
I still see a System Security 2009 file in the System Configuration Utility at startup. I have it unchecked and the System Configuration Utility gives me a popup letting me know so at startup. It says it is starting in a modified mode due to the unchecked file.
I'm guessing if I say to start it in a normal mode it would then include the System Security 2009 file. I would like to get rid of that file so I can start Windows in the normal mode.

descriptionSystem Security 2009 EmptyRe: System Security 2009

When you use msconfig, it does that, wants to restart before it takes effect.
Just reboot normally and it should be fine.

descriptionSystem Security 2009 EmptyRe: System Security 2009

System is stable. Maybe a little slow. I still see the System Security file in msconfig startup items which makes me a little nervous but if you say it is ok there I am good with it. Anything else I need to do? What would be an appropriate donation? Thanks so much for your timely and appropriate responses. You made my world a better place...

descriptionSystem Security 2009 EmptyRe: System Security 2009

more_horiz
Honestly, the file is dead, just an empty run value, nothing to worry about.
You don't have to donate if you don't want to, but even the smallest amount helps us.
