Virus

My computer is really, really slow and barely lets me sign in. I must have some kind of virus. Please help.

Please download the current version of HijackThis from HERE

• Double click and run the installer.
  
• It will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\hijackthis.exe
  
• After installing, you should get the user agreement, press accept and Hijack This will run.
  
• Select Do a system scan and save a log file. This will open a notepad file of everything Hijack This found, copy and paste it back here.
  

I downloaded hijackthis and it wouldn't run. However, I had downloaded a while ago and found this log from then.

Hello.

I notice that you have Spybot's TeaTimer running. While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with HijackThis fixes. So please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:
1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
You can reenable TeaTimer once your system is clean.

Please make sure Teatimer is disable before we do this, otherwise this fix will fail.

• Open HijackThis.
  
• Choose "Do a system scan only"
  
• Check the boxes in front of these lines:

Please download and run this tool.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

• Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  
• Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  
• The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  
• Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  
• When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  
• The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  

Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Post the contents of the MBAM Log.

OK, I tried to follow your directions. Spybot S&D wouldn't run so I deleted it. Then I did what you said with Hijack this. Then I thought I downloaded MBAM but it wouldn't run. I did however run a new scan from Hijack this.

So, I have now downloaded and run Combofix. It never gave me the option to rename it Combo-Fix. Anyway it loaded Spyware Doctor which found 84 infections and wanted me to buy their software online. Should I or is this why I was supposed to change the name?

I also thought I had disabled AVG. However, I just started a scan with it. Not sure what to do now.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs.

• Java(TM) 6 Update 13
  
• Java(TM) 6 Update 5
  
• Java(TM) 6 Update 7
  

Please do not run ComboFix without my supervision as it could cripple your system if not used correctly.


Please download and run this tool.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

• Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  
• Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  
• The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  
• Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  
• When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  
• The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  

Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Post the contents of the MBAM Log.

OK, I will definitely only do what you say since it has taken me hours to remove Java(TM) Update 13 and Java (TM) Update 7. I could not remove Update 5. It said there was a fatal error during installation. Should I still try to run MBAM?

Yes, we have a tool we can use that targets old Java anyway, so we'll use that instead.
Download and run MBAM.

MBAM took a long time to install and then it will not run. Spyware Doctor did start to run again but I stopped it. Should I remove Spyware Doctor. Is that perhaps the issue?

  * Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".
  
  2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:
  
  
  
  
  
  3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
  4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
  5. Close any open browsers.
  6. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

• Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  
• Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  
• ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.

I'm trying to do the combofix thing but it's not working. Comodo antivirus alert shows up and the hour glass just sits there. Comodo says application.Win32.Nircmd. @16774100 location c:\32788RFWJFW\NirCmd.dfexe and the hard drive beeped. My computer seems to be just about done. I appreciate everything you have done. Can you disable Comodo too?
Right click the system tray icon and exit it, or uninstall it.

I just did. I thought I did before combofix also.

Okay, if Comodo is still found to be active even when disabled, uninstall it temporarily until we are done.

OK, it is uninstalled and rebooted.

Try running Combofix now.

When I tried to run combofix it gives me an error that I cannot run combofix with the name Combo-Fix and it asks me to rename it something alphanumeric.

Like trojan generic13.atph I have weird random audio streaming occasionally also.

Okay, try downloading Combofix as normal without renaming it and see if it runs.

I did all that and it seemed to work fine. I also re-enabled AVG. I also ran MBAM again and it found no infections. Any idea what might have happened to my sound. Don't use registry cleaners, because if they delete a needed system key, your OS will fail to work ever again.

We've killed what might be causing some slowness, so anything else that is slow could be down to low end hardware. If it is hardware, then you'll need to get more memory/RAM, etc.

So, of course, I used the Registry Repair Wizard I have and "fixed" like 88 things before I got your answer not to use registry cleaners. Now my computer is very slow again and when it closes windows it does it slowly and one line at a time. Here is the latest HijackThis log. I will uninstall my registry cleaner while I await your reply. Thank you.

A few things need to run at startup, because they are part of your hardware, otherwise some parts will fail to work.

• Open HijackThis
  
• Choose "Do a system scan only"
  
• Check the boxes in front of these lines:

Go to start-->right click on my computer-->navigate to the hardware tab-->click on device manager-->Check to see if you have any yellow exclamation marks, if so name them all in your next post.
