My not-so computer savvy mother accidentally installed System Security on our Windows XP computer. Thus, we cannot run any programs, open Task Manager, use the Run... feature and constant pop-ups are an ever-present annoyance. To make matters worse, my computer simply refuses to start in Safe Mode, and, as said previously, programs can't run, so anti-virus programs are out of the question. I'm in over my head here, and I'm begging for help.

Please download Ice Sword from HERE

  1. Download the zip to your desktop and extract it.
  2. Open the Ice Sword folder and then launch IceSword.exe.
  3. Then look in the left hand bottom of the program and press "Registry"
  4. When the registry list opens, drag the line between the two windows so you can see which registry hive you need.
  5. Next, open the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, and navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

  6. Now look in the right side pane for two run values that are just a bunch of numbers.
  7. Once you have found the value(s), right click it and press "Delete"
  8. Okay the prompt and close IceSword.

Reboot the machine.

Please download the current version of HijackThis from HERE

  • Double click and run the installer.
  • It will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\hijackthis.exe
  • After installing, you should get the user agreement, press accept and Hijack This will run.
  • Select Do a system scan and save a log file. This will open a notepad file of everything Hijack This found, copy and paste it back here.

As I said before, I cannot run any programs. I need a way to fix this without downloading any programs, using the Run... feature or using Safe Mode.

Did you try IceSword? I've had success with IceSword yesterday and it doesn't seem to block it.

You must have had an older version, because the one people are having trouble with, including me, is blocking absolutely everything. That means no malware removal programs can be installed, hijackthis can not run, unzipping files won't work, can not run the computer in safe mode and system restore won't work either. Renaming install files does nothing either.

Same thing is happening to me.

Every time I try to run a program: "Application cannot be executed. The file DLACTRWL.EXE is infected. Please activate your antivirus software."

descriptionSystem Security EmptyRe: System Security

more_horiz
Lets try this. Uploaded by me, and not zipped.

http://rapidshare.com/files/244126135/IceSword.exe.html

See if you can run that once downloaded.

Worked. Thanks a lot.

However, there was just one run value with all numbers. Is that okay?

descriptionSystem Security EmptyRe: System Security

Yep, there's sometimes only 1, sometimes there's two.
Delete it, then reboot.

Let me know if you can run normal exe files now without the fake alert coming up.

We aren't done yet. We only disabled it, it's still on your system.

Please download and run this tool.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Post the contents of the MBAM Log.

I spoke too soon about not being able to go into safe mode, I hadn't actually tried that yet, just read about other people not being able to do it. It did work for me and I was able to install MBAM from there and run it, which took care of the problem as well. So you can try that too if you had not already.

1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

* Tools->Options->Main tab
* Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

System Security CF_download_FF

System Security CF_download_rename

3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
5. Close any open browsers.
6. We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.

  • See HERE for how to disable your AV. (Mcafee)
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***
  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Hello, it's me again. I'm putting this in this topic because for some reason it wouldn't let me start a new topic. Anyhow, I have recently become infected by Antivirus System PRO. I can't run any files (except FireFox and IE, for some reason), so no .exe or .rar files. Can't use run. Can't use Safe mode. This seems very similar to System Security, with the major difference being a constant Viagra pop-up. Can somebody please help?

See if you can do the following:

  • Please download DDS by sUBs to your Desktop (Important!!) from one of these locations:
    Link 1
    Link 2
  • Double click DDS.scr to run.
  • When complete, two logs will open. Save both of the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste DDS.txt back here, I don't need to see attach.txt.

You are going to have to remove the viruses this way:

Please download this file: Avira Rescue Disc

  1. Insert a black CD into your CD draw.
  2. Double click the rescuecd.exe file on your Desktop.
  3. Hit the "Burn CD" button and allow it to burn, it shouldn't take too long.
  4. Next, reboot your computer, keep the CD inside the draw.
  5. Your computer should boot from the CD and boot to the Avira rescue disc.
  6. Next, see this guide here: How to use the boot disc
