This might be a really dumb question - but if I have a dvd-r disc that someone sent me is there any software I can install that will allow me to watch it on my computer despite the fact that my dvd rom is so old that it was at "the last supper" ?

Hello,

If your DVD drive is is DVD drive, it should be able to read it. But if it's a CD drive instead, there is no other way but get a DVD drive.

it is a dvd drive - but the disc wont play in my dvd player downstairs or my computer's dvd drive upstairs - oh well -

Hello,

2 Possibilities:
- The DVD is spoiled
- Your DVD Drive is spoiled.

If you have another DVD disc you can test the drive by placing it in the drive and test if it works.

Some of the older dvd readers can only read dvd+r discs and not the newer dvd-r.
Ask your friend to do you another disc on dvd+r to check this.
