Hello,

My computer is badly infected. It started with the antivirus notice and then AVG found win32/cryptor, but couldn't fix it. It has disabled malware and won't let superspy download. It has blocked my internet access (through Internet Explorer and Mozilla), and the last time I tried to reboot it seemed stuck so I turned off the computer and disconnected the internet for fear of doing more damage.

I read your information about updating java and such, but am afraid to turn on my computer, and not sure it will even boot up. This second computer I am using is old, but apparently not infected, so, at the moment, it is my lifeline to help.

Please help. I am not geeky so need very detailed instructions in common English terminology. Thanks.

Ruth

Please download the current version of HijackThis from HERE

  • Double click and run the installer.
  • It will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\hijackthis.exe
  • After installing, you should get the user agreement, press accept and Hijack This will run.
  • Select Do a system scan and save a log file. This will open a notepad file of everything Hijack This found, copy and paste it back here.

This is assuming my computer will boot up and I can access the internet--which I was not able to do previously.

Do you have any suggestions for getting my computer to boot up if the virus is preventing this, or what to do if I can't access the internet?

If the machine refuses to boot, our best hope would be using a boot disc.

Hello.

I see you have Viewpoint software installed.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". Read this article: here and here

I suggest you remove the program now.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

  • Java 6 Update 2
  • Viewpoint Manager (remove only)
  • Viewpoint Media Player
  • Viewpoint Toolbar

Next,

  • Open HijackThis
  • Choose "Do a system scan only"
  • Check the boxes in front of these lines:

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =

  • Press "Fix Checked"
  • Close Hijack This.

Please download and run this tool.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Post the contents of the MBAM Log.

Ok, I followed your instructions up to "Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from HERE, but now I can't access the internet. I can't even get the hourglass sign, just nothing happens, even though my computer says the internet is connected.

After I pressed "Fix checked" on Hijack, again, it didn't seem that anything happened, but when I went back and checked all but one of the files was gone. So I deleted that file singly. I was trying to be very careful and only delete the requested files, but now I'm wondering if I deleted something wrong, because I do remember it asking if I wanted to delete those 10 files, and that is the number listed.

What next?

Malware still won't download properly. I clicked on the mbam-setup.exe and it got to "finishing installation" and is stalled. I can't close it or do anything with it.

OK, I was finally able to get in through Mozilla, but malware still won't install properly. It keeps stalling at the "finishing installation" point.

Also, the site you sent me to for winsockfix said it had been moved. Was this the right location?

  • Download combofix from here
    Link 1
    Link 2

    1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

    * Tools->Options->Main tab
    * Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

    2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

    win32/cryptor problems CF_download_FF

    win32/cryptor problems CF_download_rename

    3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
    4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
    5. Close any open browsers.
    6. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.
  • See HERE for how to disable your AV. (AVG8)
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

    win32/cryptor problems Rcauto10

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will then get this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

    win32/cryptor problems Whatne10

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

I still can't get malwarebytes to download and run, and now my AVG won't run--it just stops part way through the scan.

Can you help?

Hello.
Did you run Combofix?

I downloaded combo-fix and disabled AVG. When I try to run combofix I get a "Disclaimer of Warranty on Software". Since that is not mentioned in your instructions, I'm afriad to hit "yes".

Should I click "Yes"?

Yes, it's just a legal thing.

OK. Ran combofix and it installed the recovery console.

Then it said there was rootkit activity in needed to reboot, so it is doing that now. There was a list of files I had to copy down (it said it might need them later).

Does this sound like I'm on the right path? Thanks.

Yes, that's right.

Don't bother noting down the rootkits name, I already known of the rootkits presence.

Your site says my file is too big to post so I'm going to try and do it in sections (although I have no idea how big is too big).

Hello.

Now open a new notepad file.
Input this into the notepad file:

Driver::
Viewpoint Manager Service

File::
c:\docume~1\House\APPLIC~1\asd.bat

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center]
"AntiVirusDisableNotify"=-
"UpdatesDisableNotify"=-

Save this as CFScript.txt, save it to your desktop also.
Then drag and drop CFScript.txt into combofix as seen below:
win32/cryptor problems Sfxdaw

This will open combofix again, agree to it's terms and allow it to run.
It may want to reboot after it's done. (It will warn you if it wants to)
Post the resulting log back here.

Things are looking better.

My son keeps coming in and trying his stuff, so at the moment we have Malwarebytes and Ad-Aware running. He has run Malwarebytes twice so far. The first time it found 5 infections, and the second 12 (mostly Trojan TDSS). So that is progress-before we couldn't get Malwarebytes to run, and it was Ad-Aware that kept freezing up, not AVG like I posted before.

So far on this pass Malwarebytes hasn't found anything, but Ad-Aware has found 21 infections, and they both have a long way to go.

My son has left the house for the evening, so once this stuff finishes I should be able to go and do the next step you posted. Thanks again.

That seemed to uninstall Combofix. Is that what it was supposed to do?

Malwarebytes didn't find anything on the 3rd sweep, but Ad-Aware still froze and so I stopped it.

What should I do next?

I rather don't like Ad-awares method for removal, MBAM is so much faster and better at detection.

You should be okay to go now.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
I also recommand the following add-ons for Firefox, they will help keep you safe from malicious scripts or activeX exploits.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/433

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

To help you keep your software updated, please considering using this free software program that will check for program updates.
Update Checker

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or
Outpost
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

If you would take a moment to fill out our feedback form, we would appreciate it.
The link can be found here.

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. Big Grin
