Hey Gang:

You are my last hope! This laptop contracted Spyware Protect 2009, which I believe I have removed. I believe that program opened a hole for this Win32/Cryptor virus. I'm running AVG 8.5 which finds the virus but cannot remove it. It also finds (I'm not sure whether they're related or not) a virus having to do with iexplore.exe and a virus having to do with svchost.exe. Like I said this might be all the same thing, I just can't remember from the last scan. I've tried to delete the files, and they of course just re-launch themselves.

I have attempted to run Spybot Search & Destroy which is already downloaded on the system. It will not run. Malwarebytes will download but then it won't allow me to run it. Same with SUPER Antispyware. I have attempted to download the .exe programs under unrelated filenames--even going so far as to rename the .exe programs once they're downloaded, but somehow the virus still sees it and won't let it run. I've changed so many registry keys I can't even fully recall all of them.

The computer seems to be running fine. It's quick and not buggy, but it won't let me run any spyware programs (save for the Windows Malcious Programs Removal Tool, McAfee Stinger, and AVG). Also Internet Explorer does not work properly, and re-directs me to various pop-ups and websites. Also the font (especially in Google) is odd. Sometimes IE8 will let me go to the site I want, sometimes it won't. I've also downloaded and ran Avira and it found the same things, but it gave the same results as AVG and said that it found 4 items but could only deal with 2. I've thought about pulling the hard drive and putting it in an enclosure and scanning it with Malwarebytes from a different laptop, but I'd really rather get help from you amazing gents and ladies first before putting any money into it. Plus I'm scared I'd infect the other machine. I'm currently running Mozilla Firefox. I've have followed all the directions in your "read this before starting" post and finished them all except for updating from Windows Update. IE8 won't allow me to use the website, however, Auto Update is enabled and the system should be fully updated. If anyone can do anything for me I would be so incredibly grateful. I'm sure that's common to hear, but it's true nonetheless. My HijackThis Log follows:

Wow, I think things are running better already!

Combo-Fix first detected that I was running McAfee VirusScan, but I deleted it a few months ago. I still checked program files and could not find a similar set of files. I tried Add/Remove programs and could not find anything, and I tried to type various versions of the filename into Launchy and it wouldn't recognize anything. So, I ran Combo-Fix even though it found that I was running McAfee VirusScan.

Combo-Fix restarted my system from the get-go after I ran it, and said that I should write down some rootkit activity for possible later use. Here is that log:

C:/WINDOWS/system32/drivers/UACiqxdompxypptgrk.sys
C:/WINDOWS/system32/UACrobodovnxyxvkil.dll
C:/WINDOWS/system32/UACtpdqolxusdymlkr.dat

C:/WINDOWS/system32/UACpdqfuclblxsdcru.log
C:/WINDOWS/system32/UACtlpcswhkyalbvjk.log
C:/WINDOWS/system32/UACdwcmbyejruqavqw.log

Combo-Fix then set the system recovery console and said it needed to reboot. Upon the reboot it gave me a warning that I should download a new Combo-Fix, as the version I was running might be tainted because my computer "May be infected with a file patching virus (Virut)." I also kept getting a message saying that "pxe.exe" would not run and was wanting to send an error report to Microsoft. I continuously did NOT send an error report.

I downloaded a new Combo-Fix and ran it. It ran its course and came up with this Combo-Fix log: (This will be posted in multiple parts, as the message was too large.)

Also, you were correct about AVG (sorry, my fault). I had deleted AVG in order to install and run Avira, hoping it might fix my issues. I had then deleted Avira with plans of re-installing AVG. I never did re-install it, so I wasn't running a virus scan at the time of my HJT report. I have now re-downloaded and installed AVG 8.5, turned it off during Combo-Fix, and it is currently running again.

Hello.
Mcafee does a very messy uninstall and leaves behind all its folders and files, but Mcafee made their own removal tool.

Completely Uninstall McAfee software

Download the McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool

Using McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool
· Double click the MCPR.exe
· A Command Line window will be displayed, and then close automatically.
· Wait for a second Command Line window to be displayed. Note: Do not double-click MCPR.exe again, you may have to wait up to 1 minute for the next window to appear.
· After the second window appears, the program will begin the cleanup.
· Observe the installation, which could take several minutes. The following message will be displayed in the Command Line window: The machine must reboot to complete the un-installation. Reboot now? [y.n]
· Press Y on the keyboard.
· Wait for the computer to restart.

After restart, disable AVG again because we need to use Combofix, but in a special way. Below is a custom made script made only for your machine to remove some leftovers.

Now open a new notepad file.
Input this into the notepad file:

File::
C:\Autoruns.zip

Folder::
c:\program files\FrostWire
c:\program files\Common Files\Symantec Shared
C:\Autoruns

DirLook::
c:\program files\tool

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"Symantec PIF AlertEng"=-
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\services]
"McDetect.exe"=-
"McShield"=-
"McTskshd.exe"=-
"mcupdmgr.exe"=-
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\McAfeeAntiVirus]
"DisableMonitoring"=-

Save this as CFScript.txt, save it to your desktop also.
Then drag and drop CFScript.txt into combofix as seen below:
Win32 Cryptor Virus + iexplore.exe + svchost.exe (Not Sure I Sfxdaw

This will open combofix again, agree to it's terms and allow it to run.
It may want to reboot after it's done. (It will warn you if it wants to)
Post the resulting log back here.

Hello.
Upon further research of your log, you maybe infected with Virut, Combofix found a bunch of files with different file sizes than they should have originally.

Submit a file for analysis.

  1. Please visit this website: Jotti's Malware Scanner
  2. Press the "Browse" button and locate the following file in bold:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\wininet.dll

    Do the same for the following files:

    c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\ip6fw.sys

  3. Press the "Submit File button to submit the file for analysis.
  4. Allow it to be scanned, it could take a few minutes depending on server load.
  5. Copy and paste the result back here.

Greetings!

I was able to download and run Spybot Search & Destroy, Malwarebytes, and SUPER AntiSpyware. All came back perfectly clean! I also ran a full AVG scan and it came back clean as well! This computer is clean! I am completely elated. I will be spreading the word about Geek Police as much as I possibly can. Your service is unbelievable. I hope you really feel what a profound effect you have on people struggling with viruses and malware. You guys are some of the very few people that can go to bed at night knowing they've helped someone (or a large number of someone's) that day.

I had a few more questions, if that's okay, regarding general security.

1: Is the StumbleUpon toolbar okay to run? For that matter, is any toolbar okay to run?
2: Is the Dr. Web CureIt something I should run now?
3: If I attempted to run programs to fix the laptop off of a flash drive while I was infected is that flash drive no longer good? Should I throw it away or try and re-format it?

Again thank you so much for your time. You easily saved me $200 - $250--I know for a fact because I called companies seeing how much it would cost me to do what you just did for me for free. If you ever need a testimonial please contact me. Thanks!

Hello.
1. The SU toolbar should be okay to run, but I never install toolbars, good or bad.
2. No, Dr.Web will probably come back clean as well.
3. No, the USB stick can be protected, along with the internal hardrive.

Please download USBNoRisk to your Desktop and run it by double clicking the program's icon.

  1. Wait a couple of seconds for initial scan to finish.
  2. Connect all of your USB storage devices to the PC, one at a time, and keep each one connected at least for 10 seconds.
  3. If there are more USB storage devices to scan, please take a note about the order in which these were connected.
  4. After all the devices are scanned, right click in the Monitor tab, and choose "Save log". That will open the log in Notepad. Please copy and paste the log into this thread.
Explanation: USB storage devices are all the USB devices that get their own partition letter at connecting to the PC, e.g. flash drives (thumb/pen drives, USB sticks), external HDDs, MP3/MP4 players, digital cameras, memory cards (SD cards, Sony Memory Stick, MultiMedia Cards etc.), some mobile phones, some GPS navigation devices etc.

Hi again,

Also, I have a large number of folders in "My Computer" showing up now that have odd names like 02fc95c2977e1b3e3c9538 and contain .txt files with names like "msxml4-KB927978-enu" Some are showing they were modified as long as two years ago. Can I hide these somehow or delete them?

Hello.
Delete them txt files if you want to.

That's protected your drives from flash drive infections.

Note: Flash drive infections are those that make malicious autorun.inf files, this will not stop you putting malicious files on the drives.

Please uninstall USBNoRisk by doing the following.

Please open USBNoRisk one more time.
Click on "Uninstall" button on "Monitor" tab. That will delete all the logs made by USBNoRisk. After closing the program you can also delete USBNoRisk.exe from your Desktop.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
I also recommand the following add-ons for Firefox, they will help keep you safe from malicious scripts or activeX exploits.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/433

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

To help you keep your software updated, please considering using this free software program that will check for program updates.
Update Checker

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or
Outpost
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

If you would take a moment to fill out our feedback form, we would appreciate it.
The link can be found here.

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. Big Grin
