Bad news for you.

You are dealing with a polymorphic file infecter known as Virut. Sad to say it's game over for this machine and my best advice would be format and reinstall, this is the fastest and especially the safest solution.

I suggest you start to backup all of your valuable data/documents/pictures/movies/songs/etc.. Do NOT backup any applications/installers and Do NOT backup any .exe/.scr/.htm/.html/.xml/.zip/.rar files...
Doing so may restore the infection because the above file types are infected with this virut.

Thanks. After posting, I lasted a couple of hours. Everything slowed snail-pace. As I was copying files the screen went! Message: "Check Signal Cable".

I took out the hard disk, placed it in an external disk caddy and can now view the files from another machine. BUT they're stuck. I can't move them over. But maybe I should ask that question in another forum?

More than likely the files are corrupt, what file types are you trying to move?

The malware has likely messed with options and corrupted them too, I would advice you to ditch them.
