Two days ago i was on my computer and a "quicktip" bubble dialogue box thing popped up in the bottom right corner coming from the red shield with an X on it (indicating your internet security isn't running correctly such as your firewall being turned off or whatever) it said something like Windows has detected that your computer is infected etc. and then a box came up that looked like a virus protection software thing that said i was trying to be attacked by someone or something and do i want to block this attack, i could click yes or no. at the time i had no virus protection software installed, my firewall was temporarily turned off to allow some programs to work, and i had automatic updates shut off (i know this is stupid but that's what i did) i thought for some reason windows had recommended this software and of course i clicked yes. then an internet explorer page opened itself and took me to a website that sells this product. i closed that and the program opened itself and started scanning my computer (for viruses and stuff). i couldnt find a way to shutoff the program and the box in the bottom right corner kept popping up and i clicked yes to block the attack several times and closed the internet explorer page each time. i eventually opened the task manager (ctrl+alt+delete) and went to the processes tab and found sysguard.exe and turned it off from there. after that happened, if i tried to open internet explorer it wouldn't load any web pages. i told my dad what happened and he said it was a virus and i then installed norton antivirus 2009 and it scanned and removed some stuff but not this virus (Win32/NUQEL.E) Then we searched the web and tried to find any way to get rid of it. We got McAfee installed and tried that but it didn't work. I have to start up in safe mode with networking to be able to use the internet and that virus starts up every time i restart the computer when not in safe mode. How can i get rid of this virus? any help will be appreciated, thank you

Hello.

I see you have Viewpoint software installed.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". Read this article: here and here

I suggest you remove the program now.

Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

  • Viewpoint Manager (remove only)
  • Viewpoint Media Player
  • Viewpoint Toolbar

Next,

  • Open HijackThis
  • Choose "Do a system scan only"
  • Check the boxes in front of these lines:

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = \blank.htm
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

  • Press "Fix Checked"
  • Close Hijack This.

Please download and run this tool.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Post the contents of the MBAM Log.

Try a last known good configuration.
Boot into the advanced menu again using F8, but choose the last known good this time.

Hmm.
Problem with these infections nowadays is, it causes a lot of damage.

If you couldn't even get to normal mode before coming here, removing the malware has only made it worse. I'd guess Virut is present here, I've seen nuqel.e carrying Virut before.

Virut is a polymorphic file infecter and it's been spreading like wildfire recently. Problem with Virut is that it has buggy code inside it, and it corrupts the files it infects, and then the infected files cannot work properly. The result is something like causing, causing boot failure.

Do you have your XP disc?

[edit]
Just seen your post, do you have the MBAM report?

yesterday the computer actually turned on at one point, as i mentioned, but i ended up turning it off to try safe mode, that didn't work and we couldn't find the boot disk anywhere. i tried turning it on randomly throughout the day and it didn't work. i tried turning it on about half an hour ago and it actually turned on. so i got the MBAM report

Hello.
Well, the good news is MBAM didn't find any of the usual files that come with the Virut infection, I suspect your issue here is Mcafee. See here:
http://miekiemoes.blogspot.com/2008/02/whats-up-with-mcafee-lately.html

Uninstall Mcafee and install something smaller and lighter, such as Avira.

1) Antivir PersonalEditionClassic
-Free anti-virus software for Windows.
-Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts.

It only came up with 5 warnings and nothing else. When I open internet explorer it just says it cannot display the page and won't load any pages, the same with firefox and others. Im connected to the internet and can download updates for programs and what not, just i cant use browsers...

okay, so i can safely turn my computer off and on, i no longer have McAfee, i have Avira. there are no more viruses or any sort of problems except when i open a web browser it says it cannot display the page. It gives you the option to click "Diagnose connection problems" i click that and it opens "Network diagnostics for windows xp" it runs the test and says:

Windows cannot connect to the Internet using HTTP, HTTPS, or FTP. This is probably caused by firewall settings on this computer. Check the firewall settings for the HTTP port (80), HTTPS port (443) and FTP port (21). You might need to contact your Internet service provider (ISP) or the manufacturer of your firewall software.

As i said before my computer is still connected to the internet and i can download stuff, just i cant use my web browser. idk if you can help me with this or if i should call my ISP

We still have a few tricks left to try. Smile...

Download Winsock XP fix from here:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html

Download and run the file.
Press the "Fix" button, then reboot normally.

Also, post a new Hijack This log, because Mcafee does a messy uninstall.

Hello.

Thanks, we can fix it now, I know why you've lost internet connection.

  • Open HijackThis
  • Choose "Do a system scan only"
  • Check the boxes in front of these lines:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=localhost:7171
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = *.local;
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [system tool] C:\WINDOWS\sysguard.exe

  • Press "Fix Checked"
  • Close Hijack This.

Remove the Proxy setting in Internet explorer and/or in FireFox.

In IE: Tools Menu -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab ->Lan Settings > uncheck "use a proxy server" or reconfigure the Proxy server again in case you have set it previously.

In Firefox in Tools Menu -> Options... -> Advanced Tab -> Network Tab -> "Settings" under Connection > Choose "No Proxy"

Click the apply button and restart that computer in normal mode. <== IMPORTANT

Please update the MBAM database and re run another scan.
