I posted earlier for the first time but didn't explain my problem...sorry I'm new to this forum stuff.
I have had this Win32/Cryptor trojan on my computer for several months now and can't seem to get rid of it. I had McAfee and that didn't work. I canceled it and purchased AVG 8.5. I scan daily with AVG, it locates the trojan, I empty the vault but it reappears after about a half hour of using different programs - internet, Word, Excel - and, as of last week, I can't download any of my pictures from my camera. So, I was researching today and found a blog that was all folks that have this same trojan and one of them said that you walked them through getting rid of it and it's now gone from her computer. So, here I am...I need to be walked through the process as well. Here's my download as instructed:

Hello.

  • Open HijackThis
  • Choose "Do a system scan only"
  • Check the boxes in front of these lines:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
    O23 - Service: MSSQLServerADHelper - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Binn\sqladhlp.exe (file missing)

  • Press "Fix Checked"
  • Close Hijack This.

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop
Link: HERE or HERE.

  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop

Note: This tool was posted specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

2. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

  • Leave the script box empty.
  • Leave the ticked box "Scan for rootkit" ticked.
  • Then tick "Disable any rootkits found"
  • Now click on the Execute to begin execution of the script.
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

The Avenger will automatically do the following:

  • It will Restart your computer.
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
3. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

Hi Belahzur, OK, here's the results from avenger. I had to open The Avenger and run execute this step twice, it didn't work the first time so I hope you are getting what you need.
Also, AVG continues to scan whenever I open either HijackThis or The Avenger and alert me that there are multiple threats and it's put them in there vault.
Let me know what my next step(s) are.
Thanks so much for all your help.

Here's the download:

Hello.
You'll still get alerts until we are done here, so far we have only disabled the rootkit so we can use our tools.
As we continue to remove more, there will be less alerts.

1. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Drivers to delete:
UACd.sys

Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\UACpakuaybk.sys

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

2. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

  • Under "Input script here:", paste in the script from the quote box above.
  • Leave the ticked box "Scan for rootkit" ticked.
  • Then tick "Disable any rootkits found"
  • Now click on the Execute to begin execution of the script.
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

Belahzar,
OK I scanned with MBAM and removed all scanned items as directed. There is 1 item in the Log tab but how do I copy and paste it to this post? It's not in Notepad any longer and there's no edit tab to go to in MBAM.
Thanks

Hello.
This looks much better now, I just want to do one more scan to make sure it's gone, then we can let you go.

  • Please download DDS by sUBs to your Desktop (Important!!) from one of these locations:
    Link 1
    Link 2
  • Double click DDS.scr to run
  • When complete, DDS.txt will open.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste DDS.txt back here, I don't need to see attach.txt.

Belahzur, I've clicked on both Links to DDS and both are on my Desktop and when I open them, it opens a black box that tells me about the scan.
Maybe my AVG has a blocker on it that I need to deactivate. Or what am I doing wrong?

descriptionWin32/Cryptor EmptyRe: Win32/Cryptor

Probably. I know the older versions didn't mind DDS, but this is AVG 8.5, so they've probably gone crazy on the heur detections.

See HERE for how to disable AVG8.

Once disabled, try running DDS again.

Hello.

Good news! I don't see any signs of malware aside from a dead leftover driver, but we'll deal with that soon.

  • Open HijackThis.
  • When Hijack This opens, click "Open the Misc Tools section"
  • Then select "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Click on "Save List..." (generates uninstall_list.txt)
  • Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Hello.
Lets finish off here.

First, remove these two very old versions of Java.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs.

  • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
  • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_06

Please download the OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer.

  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it.
  • Copy the bolded text below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    :services
    gnqktax

    :files
    C:\Documents and Settings\Sharon\Desktop\dds.scr

    :reg
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]

  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste instructions for items to be Moved" window (under the light blue bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt3
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Please post the OTMoveIt log.

Done...the machine runs great now. However, it is taking forever for Firefox to boot up...all the other programs seem to be running much quicker and cleaner. Thanks so Much. Any thoughts on my slow Firefox?

Hello.

  • Open HijackThis

  • Press "Fix Checked"
  • Close Hijack This.

I recommend you remove the Java Quick Starter because it's not needed.
To do so, follow these instructions.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Java.
In the Java control panel, open the click the Advanced tab. Click the + in front of Miscellaneous and uncheck the Java Quick Starter box.

See here for more info.

Reboot normally.
Let me know if Firefox is still slow.

Thanks Belahzur, that helped...it's not lightning fast but better. Is it because there are too many other programs running in the back...I've heard that is sometimes an issue.
Also, what should I do with all the applications you had me download? Are any of them helpful in case of future viruses & how should I use them?
You have been so helpful and I sure know where to go now for problems and you know I'll pass you on to others.
I'll also make a donation.

Delete the avenger/OTMoveIt/DDS.
The avenger and OTMoveIt are powerful programs designed for ONLY malware removal, using them incorrectly can leave your machine trashed.

Keep MBAM though, very effective for general scans.

Check your Firefox add-ons too, disable any you don't use. Such as the AVG link scanner/toolbar.

Belahzar, Thanks again. I'm not sure how to disable Firefox add-ons. Is that what I just did with the prior instruction w/Hijack This? If not, let me know how to do that.
Thanks

descriptionWin32/Cryptor EmptyRe: Win32/Cryptor

No, that's different.

Open Firefox and go into the Tools menu.
In the tools menu, open "Add-ons".

See which add-ons you have there and if you don't use them, select whatever add-on and hit "Disable"

Should I delete HiJack This?
Otherwise, I think I'm good to go.

Now we need to make a new restore point.
To turn on System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (To turn on System Restore), and then click OK.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
I also recommand the following add-ons for Firefox, they will help keep you safe from malicious scripts or activeX exploits.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/433

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

To help you keep your software updated, please considering using this free software program that will check for program updates.
Update Checker

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or
Outpost
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

If you would take a moment to fill out our feedback form, we would appreciate it.
The link can be found here.

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. Big Grin

So the Turn off System Restore box should be checked or should not be checked? It was checked when I first opened it. It says it's "monitoring" down at the bottom of the box.

descriptionWin32/Cryptor EmptyRe: Win32/Cryptor

Monitoring means it's turned on. Did you turn it off to flush the old restore points? then turn it back on?

Yes, that's exactly what I did.
Also, I have automatic updates turned on already. I already use Firefox as my browser but my daughter uses Internet Explorer. Do I need to remove Internet Explorer from my computer or just leave it there and remove the shortcut?
You have been a terrific help...and, I've learned so much with your help.
Thanks a million.

descriptionWin32/Cryptor EmptyRe: Win32/Cryptor

Leave Internet Explorer there. It's useful if you can't get Windows Updates through the update console, that way you can get the updates manually from the MS website.

I would advise her on using Firefox, not only is it safer, but faster.

The system restore flush was done correctly. Smile...

Again, Belahzur, thanks so much for all your help. I can't express how grateful we are for all your help. I've watched your timeclock the last couple of days and I see you put in 10 -12 hour days. I'm a middle aged lady and it thrills me to see young people (I assume your young) so dedicated to a cause they believe in. Hang in there with this, you have a great model for a great website and great business. You are helping millions of people and sometimes, success is not measured by a dollar figure. You're obviously doing something you love and believe me, it will pay you back several times over!!! Best of luck to you and your crew!!!

OK, I've been on the internet for the last hour trying to find free downloads of the spyware programs you suggested - Ad-Aware SE, Spybot-Search & Destroy, SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard and I'm just not finding them. I'm googleing the name and of course, I get several options and they're all sites that sell the software. What am I doing wrong and where do I go to download these. Also, do I really need AVG now if I download all these other programs? Aren't I just duplicating what AVG does? Sorry to be such a dummy!!!
