Hi guys,
Ran into a couple of problems yesterday with a version of the WinCodecPro which is slowing my computer down, changing screen resolution, changing background etc. Trying to get me to buy a product by messing my computer up. Same old.
I actually use firefox, not IE (shown below in the log) which is why it appears as such an old version.
Anyway, I've now run HijackThis and it gave me these results:

Hello.

You are running more than one antivirus, this is a bad idea as they can conflict and cause problems.
I would recommend that you remove Sophos to avoid conflict and other future problems.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs.

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
    Java(TM) 6 Update 11
    Java(TM) 6 Update 6
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7
    Sophos Anti-Virus version 4.16.0
    Sophos Remote Update
    Viewpoint Media Player
    WildTangent Web Driver

There is also traces of Mcafee present on the system too.

Completely Uninstall McAfee software

Download the McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool

Using McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool
· Double click the MCPR.exe
· A Command Line window will be displayed, and then close automatically.
· Wait for a second Command Line window to be displayed. Note: Do not double-click MCPR.exe again, you may have to wait up to 1 minute for the next window to appear.
· After the second window appears, the program will begin the cleanup.
· Observe the installation, which could take several minutes. The following message will be displayed in the Command Line window: The machine must reboot to complete the un-installation. Reboot now? [y.n]
· Press Y on the keyboard.
· Wait for the computer to restart.
· All McAfee products are now removed from your computer.

Now we need to go deeper.

  • Please download DDS by sUBs to your Desktop (Important!!) from one of these locations:
    Link 1
    Link 2
  • Double click DDS.scr to run
  • When complete, DDS.txt will open.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste DDS.txt back here, I don't need to see attach.txt.

Ok, so it worked. This virus is clever though. I've gotta be reeal fast to Ctrl+A and Ctrl+C these notepads, because it tries to close them as quickly as possible before popping up an error message saying I can't run a whole load of "media formats" Anywhere, here it is...only took 4 attempts to get it fast enough!

Hello.
It's some varaint of the smitfraud family, DDS shows me registry keys that these kind of infections like to place to stop you changing the Desktop background.

  • Now open a new notepad file.
  • Input this into the notepad file:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]

  • Save this as fix.reg, save it to your desktop.
  • Double click fix.reg to run it.
  • Select yes to the registry merge prompt.

Smitfraud Infection Detected
Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

  • Download combofix from here
    Link 1
    Link 2
  • We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.
  • See HERE for how to disable your AV. (AVG8)
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

    My HijackThis log Rcauto10

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will then get this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

    My HijackThis log Whatne10

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Ok so that is the notebook file with the log - everything is looking good on this computer.
uninstalled ComboFix. I also have sound back and can get to my media files, and the red circle with the white "x" through it is gone too. All looking good. Got my desktop back to normal aswell. That fix has done the trick.

Many many thanks Belahzur, it wouldn't ahve been possible without you.
Because of your help my computer lives again! I'll definitely be making a donation, you all deserve some recognition of the fantastic public service you are providing here.

Many thanks again,

Winchester

Hello.
You have a new smitfraud variant, it's placing itself in Program Files under legit software like Adobe, so it threw me off the track.

I know about it now, thanks.

Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /u

My HijackThis log CF_Cleanup

This will also reset your restore points.

Hehe, i refer you to the bottom of the second post Smile... I uninstalled Combofix already using what you posted on the other guys thread which you also posted above. Thanks so much, you're really a hero - it reinstates my confidence in human nature that there are people like those here helping out for free against the horrible hackers. Big Grin
