Hi there

I've put Cryptor/win32 as the title for this post, although I must admit that I'm not certain if it's the problem anymore.

Basically, a couple of weeks ago I automatically downloaded the latest version of Firefox (3.0.8). This kept crashing so I started using ie7 to try and find a solution online. However, I started getting fake web results. Windows Update would freeze, but my anti-virus program at the time (Avast) didn't find anything.

I used various programs over the past week to try and shift this - I eventually managed to sneak AVG past the virus and it detected Cryptor, and removed only part of it. Since then I've removed more through Malwarebytes, Spybot, and SUPERAnti-Spyware. All of these programs are now showing that there are no infections.

However, although Windows Update is now working, AVG will not update and I'm still getting the redirected search results. Firefox is also crashing occasionally.

Also, System Restore was doing nothing previously (the "next" button didn't respond). Now it will let me perform a restore, but once reloaded will say that it cannot go back to that restore point.

I'm getting occasional crash messages for various AVG components, plus something like "win32 sys" (sorry, can't remember the exact name off-hand).

One final point - anything named "Flarg" or "FLarg" is actually Superanti-spyware - I had to rename the files to stop the virus from blocking them.

Many thanks for any help you can give me.
Robin

As I said in my first post, I had already run MBAM, and it had removed some items. However, I downloaded it again (as the program crashes when I try to run an update). I ran the quick scan as suggested, but nothing was found.

Here's the log of the clean scan. I've also put the log of the previous scan below that.

  • Please download DDS by sUBs to your Desktop (Important!!) from one of these locations:
    Link 1
    Link 2
  • Double click DDS.scr to run
  • When complete, DDS.txt will open.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste DDS.txt back here, I don't need to see attach.txt.

Hi

The first link doesn't seem to do anything. The second link gave me a .pif file that says it is a link to a MS-DOS program. On running it (very) briefly opens a black DOS window, and nothing else happens.

One other thought - is it possible I'm now virus/malware free, but my versions of AVG and Firefox were previously corrupted? Would it be worth me reinstalling both to see if that sorts out my issues?

Thanks again for all your help with this.

Hello.
DDS has pif/scr extensions because malware these days are blocking them from running.
I know some machines have a problem running DDS because they think scr goes straight to the screensaver.

Rename it from dds.pif to dds.exe and run it.

Sorry to be dumb, but how do I rename it? If I change it to dds.exe it actually becomes dds.exe.pif.

Ah, you don't have file extensions set to shown.

  1. Open My Computer.
  2. Go to Tools > Folder Options.
  3. Select the View tab.
  4. Scroll down to Hide extensions for known file types.
  5. Then tick that box.
  6. Press OK and now locate DDS on your desktop.
  7. Change it to exe now.

I'd already done that - my computer doesn't seem to want to show the fact that it is a .pif file unless I try to run it (doesn't seen to be an option in the properties of the file either. Is there somewhere else I can download it from?

DDS.com

Download that version and see if it will run.

Hmm... I'm getting a "page not found" error from that link. I get the feeling whatever I have doesn't want me to download dds...

I'll try downloading it to a different machine tomorrow and transfer the file across via a usb stick. Will that still work?

Thanks for your continued assistance on this!

Right. I tried putting it onto my computer via a usb key, but it still didn't work (even if changing the name and/or file extension.

Any more suggestions? I'm starting to worry I'll have to re-install Windows entirely...

Hello.
Lets try this.

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of log.txt (<< will be maximized) and save info.txt (<< will be minimized) for later.

You may need to use more than one post to fit it on the forum.

Ah, I know why now. Sorry I didn't catch on earlier. Open Grin
The infection you have is hiding in your registry and we'll have to flush it out manually.

Navigate to this file in bold:
C:\Windows\regedit.exe

Right click > Rename.
Rename it to reg3dit.exe

Now once renamed, run it and follow this path below and locate the key in bold:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\drivers32

When you reach drivers32, right click it and > Export it, save it as drivers32.reg
Open the reg file in Notepad and copy and paste the result back here.

Please download the Pocket Killbox from HERE

1. Open the Killbox.
2. Under "Full path of file to delete", copy and paste in the following:

C:\WINDOWS\cjv.jcf

3. Change "Stanard File Delete" to "Delete on reboot"
3. Press the Red X to delete the file.
4. It will ask if you want to make a backup of the file we deleted, select Yes to the prompt.
5. Killbox will now attemp to reboot your machine, if it doesn, then reboot it manually.

After reboot, fix the registry item.

  • Now open a new notepad file.
  • Input this into the notepad file:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32]
    "aux2"="wdmaud.drv"

  • Save this as fix.reg, save it to your desktop.
  • Double click fix.reg to run it.
  • Select yes to the registry merge prompt.

Let me know how the machine is running once you've done that.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
I also recommand the following add-ons for Firefox, they will help keep you safe from malicious scripts or activeX exploits.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/433

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

To help you keep your software updated, please considering using this free software program that will check for program updates.
Update Checker

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or
Outpost
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

If you would take a moment to fill out our feedback form, we would appreciate it.
The link can be found here.

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. Big Grin
