windows xp virus

I was having problems on my laptop where I could go to a site but would be re directed to another site that recommended I download something- I did not download it but don't know if another user did. I am now unable to get onto internet explorer although my computer says my connection is good. I downloaded AVG from another computer and installed/ ran it on my laptop and it said everything was ok. I have my laptop here with me but am not able to get an internet connection (no wireless network). Any advice? Thanks!!

No, it didn't freeze up at all...very quick results. I am unable to connect here (I'm at work and we don't have a wireless connection avail. here). I can't link directly in because of the way my work system is set up...
