Hi,

My boyfriend sent me here because you helped him clean up his computer after a virus. I had the zafi.b infection and think I might still have something hiding in my computer as it is running quite slow.

Hello.
Heh, don't remember your BF username here, but I remember he mentioned you.

Slowness may or may not be malware related, but lets have a look around.

I see you have Viewpoint Manager, this is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". Read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

Additional info: http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_137262.htm

I suggest you remove the program now.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
  • Viewpoint Toolbar

Lets see if this shows any malware.

  • Please download DDS by sUBs to your Desktop (Important!!) from one of these locations:
    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3
  • Double click DDS.scr to run
  • When complete, DDS.txt will open.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste DDS.txt back here, I don't need to see attach.txt.

Here is the DDS one. I had to split it as the message was too big.

And I deleted the viewpoint media player, I don't even know why I had it!

Thanks!

Viewpoint gets on machines when AIM is installed, and I see AIM in the DDS log.
It doesn't warn you when this happens, it just installs itself without you even knowing.

I don't think the slowness is malware related, the log looks fine to me.
There is a lot running at startup and running as a process which may cause slowness.

Want to try killing some stuff from startup and see what happens?

well i'm glad to hear I don't have any spyware or malware running. I just went through and stop/deleted a bunch of programs. It doesn't seem to be running any faster though.

I will do a restart and see, and then look for other things I don't use.
Any ideas on what to get rid of?

Well if you've stopped some stuff from startup yourself, then I need a new Hijack This log, because I don't know what you've done and stopped from running.

Hi.

When I check on 'fix checked' it says they will permanently delete and/or repair. Some of these, like skype i need to use. What are we doing exactly...deleting the program? Sorry don't mean to be a pain in your ass. Thanks!!

No.
HJT just deletes the run value so the programs don't appear at startup.
It doesn't actually touch the program. These programs can be started via the start menu.

If you need Skype at startup, don't check that box.
