descriptionWin32.Zafi.B/Vunto Aftermath - no connectivity - ideas? EmptyWin32.Zafi.B/Vunto Aftermath - no connectivity - ideas?

more_horiz
If a small amount of knowledge makes one dangerous, maybe you should watch out for me... :crazy:

I'm on dialup at home normally... I misplaced my brain when I got access once again to broadband at my mom-in-law's, and picked up Sheur2/Vundo/Win32.Zafi.B while smurshing across the web. --SO... I started doing research to get rid of them.

Figured I could kill them on my own, did some things. Ran MBAM, which got some of it, ran Combofix, which indicated that it found rootkit activity, and had me write down two file names/locations:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\gaopdxalqpmylv.sys
C:\WINDOWS\System32\gaopdxdykbopxu.dll

but never asked for them after deleting them...

Then I lost my C: drive for a bit because the system couldn't locate a recycler file, but regained access to it with Combofix (somehow).

I temporarily uninstalled AVG b/c I couldn't get Combofix to quit indicating that AVG was running a realtime scan, but I will probably try Avast next b/c of false positives with AVG. At any rate, I'll install and run a full complement of malware/spyware/virus software once I can re-establish a connection. And run MS Update... And update Adobe Reader :oops:

Now my laptop's LAN connection shows the happy little ! in a yellow triangle in my systray and says that I have limited or no connectivity.

Tried the Repair option on Local Area Connections in Network Connections. No connectivity. I dug around in my downloads directory and scared up Winsock XP fix, ran it. Still no connectivity. Tried "netsh winsock reset" from command line. No connectivity. Finally, I tried HostsXpert, same results (no connectivity).

I'm typing from mom-in-law's desktop-- my laptop is the one that won't connect. Both are connected via Cat5 cable directly to cable modem (one at a time, switchy, switchy). At this point I'm using a flashdrive to shuttle software installs back and forth between the connected and the disconnected computer. Notably, the desktop has great connectivity on the same cable on which the laptop has none....

Many thanks in advance for your assistance.

Hello.
This is why we ask people not to run powerful tools on their own, you have probably caused more damage than good, and I'm not sure if we can repair it.

Please remove Combofix.

Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /u

Win32.Zafi.B/Vunto Aftermath - no connectivity - ideas? CF_Cleanup

This will also reset your restore points.

Then delete these files/folders in bold:
c:\windows\system32\gaopdxcounter <==file
c:\windows\system32\budda <==file
C:\HostsXpert <== folder

The files CF warned you of are indeed the tdss rootkit, Combofix won't ask you to delete them, Combofix does this itself. I don't see anymore signs of malware in the DDS log.

Try re-installing the drivers for your wireless connection.

Chastisement duly accepted, and well-deserved. I guess things aren't quite the same since I built my first 8088-based computer.

Combofix uninstalled, 3 deletions completed.

I've arrived home to my 24.6 Kbps dialup connection now, so I'm currently unable to test my 10/100 connection.

BTW, my wireless capability is unaffected-- my laptop is currently connected wirelessly to my home network with no problems whatsoever. My problem isn't with my wireless capacity, but with my 10/100 nic card.

Thanks again

Ah.
You may need to re-install the drivers for the lan connection then.
