trojan horse on my pc

Hello GP,
I hope I'm doing this right and I'm thanking you guys in advance for setting up a service like this... and for FREE....WOW...
My problem is this.
I clicked on an exe file yesterday which brought a trojan horse with it.
AVG free detects it as a trojanhorse generic12 (btuu?)
i believe its now in the virus vault of avg but i'm running another scan as i type just to be sure its gone.
I wondered if this is ok and do you have any advice on what the best programs would be to protect my pc.
