Hello, this is my first time posting here after reading a few other topics on my problem. It looks like I have the Win32.zafi.b Trojan. Like many others, upon acquiring it, my computer automatically restarted and gave me pop-up alerts. I also noticed that firefox was crashing often.

On a side note: I ran both windows defender and my Trendmicro software right away while doing research.
Windows Defender found: TrojanDownloader:Win32/Small.IQ and Trojan:Win32/FakeIA.E. Windows defender said it was able to successfully remove both.
TrendMicro found: TROJ_JAVA.BB but was not able to successfully remove it, instead, it said to consult online help.

After completing these scans, I had to restart my computer manually (holding down the power button) due to a freeze up after opening IE (which never happens). During this startup it froze again right before I could enter my password to log onto my windows account. I had to manually restart AGAIN. Upon booting up I received a windows error immediately. “ViewMgr has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.” I have not encountered the pop-up alert since the reboot, but I just wanted to be sure.

After reading other topics, I realized I probably need to update my Java, but wasn’t sure if I should do that before being helped.

Sorry for the long explanation, here is my HijackThis log:

Wow thanks for the quick response! The link your provided for OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer is not working for me. I get a page load error from firefox "Failed to Connect Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at download.bleepingcomputer.com.

Edit: I also restarted my computer when it asked me to after fixing the checked files in HijackThis. I hope I was supposed to do that =).

Okay, lets run a rootkit scan and delete that bad file at the same time.

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop
Link: HERE or HERE.

  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop
2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Files to delete:
C:\Documents and Settings\Jason\Application Data\Google\yfijv17721328.exe

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

  • Under "Input script here:", paste in the script from the quote box above.
  • Leave the ticked box "Scan for rootkit" ticked.
  • Then tick "Disable any rootkits found"
  • Now click on the Execute to begin execution of the script.
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

The Avenger will automatically do the following:

  • It will Restart your computer.
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
4. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

Hello.
Yeah, now the rootkit driver has been disabled, Trend Micro will go crazy, but ignore it and tell it not to do anything, because we need to do it ourself so I know we get it all and something doesn't interfere with our removal.

I have not received any alerts regarding Win32.Zafi.B anymore and my trend-micro seems to be okay with everything except for one thing thats been persisting for quite awhile:

Incident name: C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\HGStart9USA.exe
Detection name: RAP_Generic
It pops up usually everyday and I have a feeling a program is creating it everyday, but not sure.

That may be a little off topic however, but if its an easy fix I'm all ears =).
I'm going to try restarting my computer and seeing if anything else shows up. Thank you for everything thus far!

It's probably because something is abusing Internet Explorer, I would consider switching to Firefox (we'll talk more about that soon, not a big issue right now)
We need to stop the infection from getting back in, so lets update Java.

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java:

  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11.
  • Select the first option where it says "Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • In the Window that opens, select your platform and language, check the "agree" box, and click Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    - Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    - J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    - J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.
Please make sure the new version of Java is installed before you run JavaRa.

Please download JavaRa from here

  • First, unzip it.
  • Then run JavaRa.
  • Select English from the drop down menu and press Select.
  • This will open JavaRa.
  • Press Remove older versions
  • Press yes to the prompt.
  • It will make a log file of what it's removed.
  • Copy and paste the log back here.

Lol, took me a while to notice the new page haha. So here is my late response:

Edit: I didn't see the link in the first instructions paragraph and thought it was the one at the bottom, let me follow the instructions and repost.

Edit2: Yeah, I'm not acting too sharp this morning. Like I said earlier, I missed the link for the "Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11" and followed the latter instructions "JavaRa" first. WHen I went back and followed the instructions for Java SE..., I didn't find any Java programs installed and figured they might have been deleted from the JavaRa (remove older versions) instructions. My mistake, I rebooted the computer anyway and followed instructions for the JavaRa again. It encounters a problem and promptly closes when trying to reinstall. Shall I post the txt file?

descriptionWin32.Zafi.B and possibly others EmptyRe: Win32.Zafi.B and possibly others

The txt file is really long (238KB) probably because of all the versions it deleted.

2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (or the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box), and then click OK.
4. Click Yes when you receive the prompt to the turn off System Restore.

Now we need to make a new restore point.
To turn on System Restore, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Click the Turn off System Restore check box (To turn on System Restore), and then click OK.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. Goofy

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
I also recommand the following add-ons for Firefox, they will help keep you safe from malicious scripts or activeX exploits.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/433

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

To help you keep your software updated, please considering using this free software program that will check for program updates.
Update Checker

5) Finally, consider maintaining a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or
Outpost
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. Big Grin
