Win32.Zafi.B

So I got the Win32.Zafi.B bug too. Furthermore, when I attempted to get a Symantec update for a new virus scan Symantec said I couldn’t connect, my adaware cant update either, both of them say my computer isn’t connected to the internet, which it is. When I open any browser, I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled firefox. I get a prompt that my network is unsecure. So if I bypass that prompt, I get to my homepage, and I can search and stuff… however when I click a link in Google, it will redirect me to a search page, yellow pages, other random somehow associated with advertising… everything is running slow, and it sux. The biggest thing is that NO new exe file can run on the computer either.

You are running an old version of Hijack This, and we need to use the new version before we can do anything else.

Please download the current version of HijackThis from HERE

• Double click and run the installer.
  
• It will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\hijackthis.exe
  
• After installing, you should get the user agreement, press accept and Hijack This will run.
  
• Select Do a system scan and save a log file. This will open a notepad file of everything Hijack This found, copy and paste it back here.
  

Thats the problem, I cant get to that website, and I cant run a new EXE file either.

• Open HijackThis
  
• Choose "Do a system scan only"

• Then tick "Disable any rootkits found"
  
• Now click on the Execute to begin execution of the script.
  
• Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
  
  The Avenger will automatically do the following:
  
  
• It will Restart your computer.
  
• On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  
• After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  
• The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
  

4. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

Updating Java:

• Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11.
  
• Select the first option where it says "Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11".
  
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
  
• In the Window that opens, select your platform and language, check the "agree" box, and click Continue.
  
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  
• Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  
• Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.

So I'm simply saving the .txt file to [ fix.reg ] correct? When I do so the icon changes to a rubix cube esque icon. When I click it i get a prompt that asks if i want to add the information in C:\Doc & Set\ User Name\Desktop\fix.reg to the registry, click yes, however it tells me that the specified file is not a registry script. What am I doing wrong?

Did you include the Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 as the TOP line.
It has to be the top line, then the second line is blank.
Then the third line is the fix.

The first line was a space and not the required [Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00]. So it worked.

OK, so everything was working I installed all the windows updates. So now on my login screen to XP it's asking for a password which I have never enabled since I've owned my computer. Therefore cant get back onto my computer. I'm afraid to start attempting passwords if someone is looking. I'm now on a laptop, and have the ability to continue to debug. Whats my next step.

If you can, boot to safe mode.

Normally, there is a hidden administrator account that can only be seen in safe mode menu at the login screen, so if you can do that, then logon to the admin account and remove the password on your acc.

Do you need instructions for booting to safe mode?

already tried that, safe mode is still asking for an administrator password.

Unless you got this machine with a very custom password, did you try putting in:
admin
administrator

As a password?

tried admin... let me get back to you. I"m not with the desktop, its probably that simple.

tried many variations of admin, administrator, password, etc... none of them are working in safe mode. the windows startup icon is smaller than it used to be, and it's running extremely slow as well.

If your locked of your user account, and can't access Windows, the only option we have now is to boot from disk.

Dunno, never heard of a virus locking you out of Windows, there's just no reward of that.
Once you backup your files, we can try and remove the password by booting from disk.

well i went back to the latest known good starting point from the safe mode screen. And the computer is back to working. Should i be leary of windows updates...doubt it. Regardless I'm backing everything up, and doing a system wipe and booting from disk.
