Computer Freezes on Virus Scan

I recently posted the following message in the Virus/Spyware/Malware forum. The person who picked up the post tried a few things but has concluded that my problem is a hardware problem and not a malware one and suggested I try here. 2 additional notes: -

1. The Hijackthis log below is from Sunday 15th Feb and is probably out of date (can do another one, if required)

2. Today I have tried to play a TV program using the BBC iPlayer and it crashed and froze my PC 9 mins into a 30 min program

I have AVG free Anti Virus installed on my PC and it runs as a scheduled task at 1.00 am every morning. I check the results when I get up in the morning. On the 7th Feb AVG froze overnight. I could not do anything except reboot the computer. The same happened on the 8th Feb.

I uninstalled AVG and installed Avira Anti Vir Personal. This ran 2 days running and found no detections. However, on the 3 day this froze as well. On the advice of a colleague I downloaded, and installed AVG Free Anti Rootkit. This completed a scan but found nothing. I then did the same with Malware bytes Anti-Malware and this scan completed with 2 items found that I removed. I then reinstalled AVG Free Anti Virus and this froze again.

Next, I tried Avast and this also froze my PC. Finally, I tried PC Tools Anti Virus 5 Free and this froze my PC as well.

All other software on my PC seems to be running OK but I have been unable to complete an Anti Virus scan on my PC for 9 days and haven’t a clue what is causing the problem – any ideas.

This should fix the error.

Press Start > Run.
Type in both of these command one line at a time.

msiexec /unregister
msiexec /regserver

Note the spaces between the c and /
Press enter.

What about my original problem? I posted in the hardware forum as you suggested but was moved back here by an Administrator.

My PC is still freezing on virus scans but on other things as well now. E.G. I was playing a music CD this morning and about 8 tracks in my PC just froze. Another was last night - I was playing a backgammon game that I have had for a number of years and it just froze - never happened before. I don't know what is causing this but I really need some help to find out.

I was so confused when I read my post. :crazy:

I am also confused now. Can you help me any more with my problem?

This isn't malware, it's most likely a hardware issue.
Graphics card maybe.

So what do I do next? I've already posted in the hardware forum and have been moved back here
